First Ever Beef Brisket Smoke Tomorrow - Advice?

So, the title I guess. Other details, I’ll be using a kamado, standard lump charcoal and lava stone setup. Done lots of ribs and pork butts, but this will be my first brisket. Particularly any advice for prep and seasoning?

Summer Vacay 2026 - Upper Midwest/Great Plains, USA

Alright awesome people of r/suggestmeabook, I’m looking for authors from or writing about the upper Midwest/Great Plains region of the US (NOT NAMED Willa Cather) for this year’s family roadtrip.

Love me some Willa, but read most of her work.

We fly into Kansas City and drive north as far as Fargo so MO, KS, NE, SD, ND, MN, IA are all on the agenda. Thanks for any recommendations you care to share!

11/??? - Beowulf

Despite taking courses in classics and Medieval English literature, I somehow missed the tale of Beowulf. It stands tall as a foundational piece of literature behind much of my favorite adventure and fantasy literature. Knowing that Tolkien also completed a famous translation of this work, the parallels to The Hobbit were extremely obvious. A party of 12 + 1 warriors and a thief set out to settle a blood feud against an ancient dragon and reclaim a fantastic treasure!

This is a centuries old masterpiece, but Heaney’s translation rendered it quite accessible.

Begging for Mercy from Mods - Ideal Depth and Height of Shelves?

Hi all! I have a bookshelf question for the community that I don’t know where else to ask. I have no pictures of either shelves or books because this is for a new build in a new house.

We will have about 34 linear feet of landing that would need a rail and the plan is to build in bookshelves as our barrier.

What is your opinion for the ideal shelf depth and height of the shelves?

My gut says space them at 12” so the total is 36” plus material widths. But would love other opinions.

As to depth thinking about 24 feet at 10” with glass fronts for dust control, the. Another separate section of 10 feet at 12” deep for board games and such.

Thoughts?

9&10/??? The Best of Gene Wolfe and Theo of Golden

  1. An excellent selection of short SF from a true master of the genre. Gene Wolfe combines incredible speculative motifs with a true mastery of language in a way that never fails to engage me. Several of these plots will definitely stick with me for the long haul.

  2. Theo of Golden was a truly delightful tale of a gentle soul quietly going about his life and making the world a kinder place. The writing was decidedly straightforward and understated in a style that makes this an easily accessible novel. I did feel that the mystery of Theo’s identity and mission in Golden (and the resolution thereof) almost detracted in some way from the “sweetness” of his actions and the overall impact of the story, but maybe that’s just my crusty old cynical heart.

While this novel is ostensibly about a marriage (and that relationship is front and center) it is really the backdrop that I found compelling. There is so much going on, from southerners finding their way in a post reconstruction world, to the agricultural and economic development of central Florida, to the beginning of industrial scale fishing and the impact of broader cultural and educational opportunities on family relationships. Hurston has her skills as a keen observer and anthropologist (maybe more of an ethnographer at that time) on full display in this novel.

For all that, it was extremely frustrating to see a husband and wife talk past and around, rather than TO each other. Also, the casual acceptance of the patriarchal hierarchy is a tough sell to the modern ear.
