Aliens That Aren't Just Humans With Better Technology/Higher Intelligence, Sometimes To The Point Where They Are Arguably Less Advanced

  1. Eridians - Andy Weir: Project Hail Mary is pretty well known and probably needs no explanation, but I'll do it anyway. Rocky is one of the two main characters from the book/movie Project Hail Mary (PHM). ''His'' species are isogamic pentapodal radial asymmetric sophonts with large swathes of their bodies composed of inorganic material, chiefly rocks. Along with this, they have crystalline brains and photographic memory. On an individual level, it can be easily argued that the average Eridian is smarter than the average human. However, their intelligence isn't on a clean scale of more or less smart. For example, Eridians have no concept of object permanence, due to the fact they use hyper-precise echolocation to navigate the world, opposed to eyes. The "no eyes" also affects them on a societal level, as they haven't found out about relativity, radiation, etc.
  2. Birrin - Alex Ries: Created by Subnautica lead designer Alex Ries, The Birrin Project is a speculative evolution project focusing on the biota on the fictional planet Chiirah. At the centre of the project are Birrin, which are hexapodal, matriarchal sophonts with 4 eyes and 4 jaws. As a civilization, they have existed for possibly twice (or more) the length of human civilization, but due to an apocalyptic ecological disaster & societal collapse (known as "The Fall"), they aren't nearly as advanced as one would expect.
  3. Centaurs - Jay Eaton: Technically any of the 4 alien races from the comic Runaway To The Stars (RTTS) could hypothetically fit this, but I'll just take about Centaurs, as the main character is one and not to over yap. Centaurs are hypercarnivorous savanna dwelling sophonts, and much like the Birrin, matriarchal and hexapodal. In the comic they're set in, they were first contacted by other sophonts aliens when they were still in the radio age. This plus the fact they were the newest aliens to be contacted made stuff like healthcare and food hard to come by when off-planet. They also talk through their trunks and have part of their respiratory system in their head. I didn't know where to add this but GOD IS THAT NOT COOL??!?!?!!

I've left more information in the comments about each of the species as this post goes WAY too little into the finer details of Andy, Alex, & Jay's worlds
