A year ago I made an off-handed comment here about how I'd bring my business downtown if rent wasn't so high. A landlord told me to DM him, and after demo, lots of permitting, and construction, I got the keys to our new space today.
Last year, Portland unveiled the Central City Task Force, and I chimed with my POV on what I see as the biggest blocker to a more lively downtown. I actually had multiple landlords reach out, each offering great deals on their spaces, but this building at 3rd and Taylor had what we needed in terms of space and storage (since much of our business is still online).
This was last May/June, the lease was signed in December and after demo, permitting, re-permitting, construction, I got the keys this morning. We're still a ways out from opening, a few weeks until I can get in there and build the retail fixtures out, but it feels so real now.
A huge thank you to The Standard Insurance, my landlord, who has been absolutely fantastic to work with and has helped get this project to where we're at today. Hope to see y'all around in the coming months!
Sky Nest was a success. SPW East was a blast. Thanks to everyone for the hospitality for all of us west coasters crashing your party.
A few shots from camping at Fumotoppara the other week.
Been wanting to camp here for some time, but schedules never worked out until my most recent trip. Brought very little camping gear from home, bought 99% of it at 2nd hand shops once I got to Japan. Everything in my kit (chair, bag, tent, firepit, etc) was assembled for around $300.
The weather was typical Japan May weather. Torrential downpour one hour, hot sunny weather the next. Was glad to have a large vestibule to hang out in, but the campground also has a public bath, cafe, and restaurant where I could have killed time if really needed.
For anyone curious who I am, here’s your chance
Had the pleasure of welcoming the Snow Peak team to my studio a little while back when they were kind enough to spotlight the archive, storytelling, and work I do.
One of 1,143 [Nissan Silvia Varietta] up on Mt. Akagi today
Spent yesterday at Korea’s largest camping expo
If you saw my post from the other week at an expo in Japan, this was quite different. Far fewer of the small brands with their local crafts and an insane amount of air frame tents. Every brand had at least one, many had multiple. There were also thicker air mattresses than my mattress at home. Metal manufacturing was also very prevalent with laser cut stainless goods just about everywhere. As always if there’s any questions I’m happy to answer them!
Spent the weekend at one of the largest camping gear expos in Japan.
Field Style is typically in Nagoya, but for the 10th anniversary it was held in Tokyo. Huge turnout of ultralight, overlanding, and car camping brands from Japan and all over Asia.
