SFU's campus ain't ugly

I went to study abroad and lowkey have more appreciation for the school. While the architecture isn't necessarily the best, it's alright. One thing that's rlly beautiful about SFU is its surrounding campus that I've taken for granted. Like, how often is it that a school campus is surrounded by mountains and water??? SFU lowkey needs more appreciation for its campus in the community and nationwide scale, the hate is overrated!

And, does anyone have any nice view spots at SFU that captures the beauty surrounding SFU (hike trails accepted too)? Kinda like these SFU images online but smth I can actually visit and not a drone shot? SFU's nature surroundings is actually so gorgeous that I really missed the views when I was abroad (you can take the girl out of the mountains and sea but you can't take it out of her)

CPAs in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, How's the Career Progression?

Currently still a student and just wanted to know what most CPAs' career progression is like in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. I just want to have some sort of idea on when to hop in/out of a job so I can grow professionally while working towards earning a comfortable salary.

This is my current context:

  • Completed an 8-month internship at a mid-size firm in business taxes
  • Completed a 4-month internship at the Big 4 in CA/US cross-border taxes with return offer accepted for next yr start
  • Completed a summer program at UC Berkeley recently (idk if this would make any diff in salaries in Vancouver/Canada tho)

Obviously I'm a little early on thinking about my career, but would like to plan accordingly since I do want to stay in Vancouver and do want to have my own family (and land home?) at some point.

I took British Columbia and Canada for granted

I moved to Canada/BC seven years ago. I don't know what I was on, but this summer I just realized how big and beautiful this province and country can be.

It's pretty crazy I never went out to explore nearby places like Victoria, Bowen Island, Nanaimo, Hornby Island, etc during my time here until recently. Some of these places, you can do a day-trip during the weekend after grinding some exams (especially the summer). Some of the hikes there are so breathe taking that I now understand why BC is coined as Beautiful British Columbia.

I sometimes find myself complaining how there's nothing to do here, but I realized how little I saw of BC (and Canada itself). It's rlly how you make of your life. This province and country is so big and I wished I had started to explore what was within my grasp before missing out on the gems around me. It got me curious on what places like Nova Scotia, Newfoundland & Labradour, Yukon, etc has to offer. I'm probably going to plan a few more weekend getaway trips this summer where I leave on Friday and come back on Sunday night before the study grind starts again.

Does anyone have any ideas of weekend getaways to do? Top of my list is Kelowna, Tofino, Prince George, etc. Maybe if budget allows I would love to see Banff at some point.

Is anyone going on exchange to UC Berkeley (Haas Business) this summer?

Currently attending UC Berkeley for an exchange and would love to connect if anyone else is also here or coming in next month. Haven't seen anyone from UBC yet so thought I'd check here. I did find an exchange gc on discord if anyone coming to Berkeley wants to join: https://discord.gg/4wkCJbbcHy

What are things/actions that have made you not friends with your friends anymore?

Mine is my friends couldn't accept my success and viewed me in envious eyes and always believed I was showing off. Idk if this is normal in anyone's friendships, but I truly believe the rotten fruit eventually falls on its own!

Harbour Centre Gym

It's quite rather strange I cannot find any images online on what it looks like on the SFU pages. Sus, but coolios. Has anyone used it before? I'd like to see and hear what it's like before dropping an annual fee of $120 on it.

I'm taking only two online intersession classes this summer and I live much closer to downtown (and work around there) than the Burnaby campus, so I'd prefer to go to the gym downtown.

Do you ever regret going to SFU?

Funny to say, I don’t regret going to SFU. If anything, it’s shaped me into a much better person than I expected.

Back in Grade 12, I was devastated after getting rejected from UBC Sauder. At the time, it genuinely felt like my life was over. Looking back now though, my life was really just beginning. Being at SFU, specifically in Beedie, has taught me so much. There have been so many small moments, setbacks, and opportunities throughout my degree that changed me as a person. I truly believe that even if I had gone to UBC, I wouldn’t have ended up as strong or as driven as I am today.

Because I went to SFU, I felt like I had to challenge myself more, like putting myself out there, joining programs and extracurriculars, meeting new people, and actually creating opportunities instead of waiting for them to come to me. And I’m a big believer that what you put into your university experience is what you get out of it!

I know I complain about SFU sometimes (and maybe some of you do too), but thinking about it now, it’s really not that deep. I’ve met incredible friends, gained a stronger appreciation for our mountain views (underrated!), and been involved in so many meaningful experiences around campus. Aside from the occasional struggle with grades and stress, SFU deserves more love. ❤️

Curious to hear other people’s thoughts, whether you regret your experience at SFU, what you wish you did differently during university, or anything else. It's so easy to go on a tangent hating on SFU, but let's give it some appreciation!

If you're an incoming UC Berkeley summer session exchange student, feel free to join the Discord server I created: https://discord.gg/nVvmfKrDU2

It’s pretty basic for now, but the goal is to create a space where you can meet other incoming exchange students, ask questions, and connect before arriving. It can be pretty tough finding others on Reddit, so I thought it'd be easier to have our own little community!! 😊
