Flinging puzzle pieces

Carl and I had an uncomfortable conversation about needing to get off the puzzle last night, and after he left, I discovered a big piece was missing. Couldn't find it anywhere near the puzzle table last night. Thought about how he left the table and decided to look in a bigger arc. Those pieces are at least six feet away from the table.

He would do it again in a heartbeat.

Beautiful View, Seesaw, 1000 pieces

Enjoyable to do, and Starry Night in 65 pieces is a breeze.

I don't know all the artists, and there's absolutely no information on the box, which is disappointing. It took three tries to get this much out of google. Even then they got the rows wrong, because I asked them to start at the top left. The last one tells me a lot about image recognition.

Row 1 (Top Row)

Claude Monet (Water Lilies)

Vincent van Gogh (Montmajour under it / Sunset at Montmajour)

Claude Monet (The Cliff at Étretat)

Vincent van Gogh (The Banks of the Oise at Auvers)

Row 2

Claude Monet (The Artist's House at Argenteuil)

Vincent van Gogh (Landscape with Cypresses / Twilight)

Vincent van Gogh (The Starry Night)

Claude Monet (The Artist's Garden at Giverny)

Row 3

Claude Monet (Haystacks / Wheatstacks)

Vincent van Gogh (Olive Trees)

Claude Monet (The Water-Lily Pond / The Japanese Footbridge)

Claude Monet (Grainstack at Sunset)

Row 4 (Bottom Row)

Vincent van Gogh (Landscape with House and Ploughman)

Vincent van Gogh (Starry Night Over the Rhône)

Gustav Klimt (Farm Garden with Sunflowers)

Vincent van Gogh (Irises)

How to make the overskirt full and floaty?

I'm making this dress to wear to a wedding in November. Tea length. The base fabric will be the shadow stripe shown in the next picture. The chiffon overlay is shown in the next two pictures.

I want the overskirt to be super full and floaty and I have plenty of fabric. I'm thinking of cutting eight panels instead of the four for the underskirt, and then gathering them in at the waist. Could sew darts, too, to reduce the 8 panels to the size of the four- panel underskirt. Thoughts?

Will do long sleeves with the sheer fabric only.

Two thrifts and a swap, $21

The two Eames puzzles and the two animal head puzzles came from different places. My first swap and it explained why the thrift shops in that town had such paltry offerings. Everybody saves up their puzzles for the swap.

I released about half as much as I brought home. Next time I go I have a lot more puzzles to let go of that I'm not ever going to do.

I love that the swap didn't have taped up puzzle boxes, but heavens, please put your pieces in a plastic bag inside the box!

Beach Camp, Buffalo, 1000, artist Genp Peoples

Enjoyable and straightforward enough to work, except for some false fits that required to adjoining pieces in the areas that didn't have image guidance. Like most of the palm trees.

Thrifted, and disappointed to find three pieces missing because I bought the puzzle to give to someone who's an Airstream fan, and now I can't.

Funny story: i wasn't sure if this was an Airstream, so when I found the puzzle in the thrift shop, I googled, does Geno Peoples paint Airstreams? Google said, no, he's a visual artist who paints landscapes often using vintage imagery. It took a few more questions to confirm that this was an Airstream in Base Camp.

Shelter Cove, Whitman Guild, 600, MCM 1966, Bennett Bradbury

Enjoyable, although the colors are harder to see at the piece level under artificial light.

In remarkably good shape for its age. Expected it to be half missing; the pieces were loose in the box. Only missing two pieces.

Goes with our string art, but we won't be keeping the puzzle. Any MCM collectors out there?

Magpie, Phil Lewis, Liberty Puzzles, 155 pieces, wooden

Put this together this afternoon to see if I liked wooden puzzles. They don't show up in the thrift shop stream very often, but I have one or two and I didn't know if I should buy more.

It was fun, although it took a different approach to solving than normal cardboard puzzles. I couldn't see the shape of the pieces well on my greenfelt table, so I went to a white board. Will get a better piece of foam core if I do a bigger wooden puzzle.

Color Challenge, Buffalo, 1000

Thought I would enjoy this more than I did. Didn't like working all the orange, and never could see a pattern. The whole thing was piece by piece.

Will try to repair the missing edge piece before returning it to the thrift shop stream.

Will not do another one like this.

Thrifters: when is it time to let a puzzle go?

I just finished a puzzle. It's missing two pieces, and it's a very old puzzle, and many of the thin pieces are badly creased and may very well tear the next time someone takes it apart.

I'm learning to make replacement pieces, but the general condition of the other pieces in this puzzle makes me doubt that it would be really worth it.

I hate throwing anything away that might still have a useful life, but I also hate buying broken junk from the thrift shop.

Thoughts?

Washington DC Metro map, 500, NYPC

Have used this system, so I thought I would know it. Wrong. Was a bit concerned about all the white, but it wasn't that much by the time all the colors and lies were in.

Three instances of "Largo Town Center" threw me for a bit.

The Gardener's Palette, Ravensburger, 1000 pieces

Very fun to do. It was pretty much thirty mini puzzles, but the sorting was very different from what I started with. When I looked at the box, it looked like six main colorways, but that's not at all how it turned out.

Thrifted with no information, three missing pieces.

Find Your Piece Blanc by Buffalo, 300

Thrifted puzzle. Much easier to do than I thought it would be, but that's because it was only 300 pieces or rather, 298. Very plastic feel to the pieces.

Thrift run in Waynesville, NC

Waynesville Family Store and Mountain Projects Resale. $20 for all.

Must not start a puzzle in a motel...

I'm hoping the 62-piece version of Starry Night is manageable. There are 16 pictures in the Seesaw.

Not at all sure about the Hallmark Cats on Parade.

Thrifted puzzle fears

Fortunately, the green edge pieces turned up when I started working that part of the puzzle, so the rest of the edge pieces may also still be in the box.

Crystals, 500, Galison

My first Galison. Straightforward and reliable. Will do more, but will probably look for more pieces because this went a little fast.

At the Zoo, Osborne, 100

Bought this at a thrift shop for the grands. Needed to verify that it had all the pieces. The picture on the inside is gone, nd the red label in the upper right corner obscures some of the puzzle picture, so I'll have to print the photo for the kids.

Nice tight, feel to the pieces and clear picture alignment.

Magical Barcelona Nights lucky puzzles,1000

This was way harder than my current skill level, and I didn't did not enjoy completing it. Finished it so that I could be sure it had all the pieces and I take it to a swap.

The puzzle is a random cut, and I had to look at a picture of the completed puzzle to have any idea of what kind of shape I was looking for. The colors didn't give a whole lot away.

I do have a better appreciation for the artist's work, having stared at it so intimately for a week. Ana Maria Edgulescu.

The border on the edge of the box shows a regular cut puzzle, which is absolutely nothing like the pieces inside.

Cary, NC, Thrift run

The Kandinsky is by Eurographics, the crystals and Paris are Galison, the gradient is Buffalo, turtle is Lantern Press, NC is Galleryware, and the triangle gradient is Amazon.

There were a bunch more in the run, about 18 puzzles for about $60. Dorcas, Mama Edna, and Thrift 2 gift. Dorcas and Mama Edna have speed puzzlers who verify the piece count before they sell puzzles.
