I made a nonogram-adjacent iOS puzzle game with no ads

Hi everyone!

I posted here a while back when I first released my game and I wanted to share the newer version now that I’ve had time to polish it.

It’s not exactly a nonogram, but it uses similar row/column clue deduction logic. Instead of revealing a picture, you use the clues to build out a winding hedgemaze.

There are 2,000+ puzzles across four difficulty levels, daily challenges, leaderboards, and no ads or energy timer shenanigans.

Getting the app live made ASO way easier

I launched my iOS puzzle game recently, and honestly just getting it live was a huge milestone.

But, with everything you have to think about when launching, I felt like I didn’t dedicate enough energy towards screenshots and ASO, but now that it’s out, it’s been much easier to refine the everything. I feel like I needed the first launch to see what needed tweaking.

I recently added a preview video and have already seen an uptick in conversion.

I also just finished these new App Store screenshots that will go live with my next version. I am pretty happy with how they turned out, but let me know what you think!

Did you guys have an easier time updating everything after version 1 was already live? Any major overhauls that worked out?

New Mobile Game - What if the maze was the answer instead of the puzzle?

I recently launched a logic/puzzle game for iOS where you build a maze instead of solving it. Each level starts blank and you fill in the maze by placing “hedges” to create a winding path through the level.

It’s called Hedgemaze, and is similar to a nonogram or sudoku style puzzle, but I thought the folks here might appreciate the concept and would love to hear what you think!

Does anyone else struggle with Sokoban-style puzzle games?

I’ve played and loved all sorts of puzzle games like the Witness, Taiji, The Talos Principle (1 and 2), Snakebird, Artisans of Glimmith, obra dinn, and plenty of others, but for some reason my brain completely short circuits when it comes to Sokoban-style games.

I’ve tried getting into Baba Is You and Stephen’s Sausage Roll multiple times because they’re so highly regarded, but I always hit a wall. I struggle to visualize the solution a lot times and end up guessing my way through them.

Does anyone else feel this too or have a different puzzle genre that just doesn’t click?

A tutorial puzzle accidentally became one of my hardest puzzles

Good tutorials are hard to make! Trying to teach through natural progression is even harder.

I created a set of puzzles I thought were easy to help with onboarding, but during testing, players consistently got stuck despite the puzzle looking much simpler than later levels.

The puzzles use row and column numbers similar to a nonogram, but totaled instead of segmented. While the puzzle looked easy, the total clue numbers left too many possibilities, making the deduction much harder than I intended for one of the first 3 levels.

Rather than swapping it out a new puzzle completely, I used it as an opportunity to introduce the hint system, by using a popup to push players towards trying a hint out. The first hint reveals segmented clues (similar to traditional nonograms), which makes the solution a lot easier to work through.

It ended up becoming one of my favorite tutorial moments because a player pain point turned into a teaching opportunity.

Do you guys have any similar stories? I love reading about tutorialization in games
