USM Student couple looking for an apartment

Hi everyone! We’re a student couple looking for an apartment near the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) and are open to either:

A 1-bedroom apartment for just the two of us, or

A 2-bedroom apartment shared with another person/couple to split the rent.

We’re clean, respectful, and easygoing. Ideally looking for somewhere close to campus and reasonably priced.

Any places you have in mind?

Family business sponsoring my tuition for I-20

I’m an international student preparing for my U.S. undergraduate studies, and I wanted some advice about financial sponsorship for my I-20.

I do not have a scholarship, but my tuition will be sponsored by my family business, which is a well-established company. The remaining costs, such as living expenses and other education-related expenses, will be covered by my father personally.

The family business is closely connected to my father and relatives, and they are willing to provide official sponsorship documentation showing that they will support my tuition. My father also has the financial capacity to cover the rest of the cost.

My question is: would having part of my studies funded through a strong, established family business look better for the I-20 and F-1 visa process compared to only showing personal/family bank funds, especially since I do not have a scholarship?

I understand that everything needs to be genuine, well-documented, and easy to explain. I’m just wondering whether a family-business sponsorship is generally viewed positively, or if it could raise extra questions because it is not a scholarship.

Any advice from people who have gone through a similar process would be appreciated. Thank you.

Second F-1 attempt after 214(b) – do these changes actually help

Hi everyone,

I'm applying for my F-1 visa a second time after a 214(b) refusal and wanted to get some honest opinions.

During my first interview, the officer asked about a Europe trip because it appeared on my DS-160. I had planned the trip when I filled out the form, but it was canceled before my interview, so I truthfully explained that I hadn't actually gone.

After the refusal, I was asked to submit additional financial documents, but I only sent bank statements and didn't include my family's full financial picture.

Since then, I have actually completed the Europe trip, so my DS-160 now matches my travel history, and I'll also be presenting much stronger and more complete financial documentation.

Do you think these changes could make a meaningful difference in a second interview, or is it more likely that the refusal was for something else entirely?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through a second F-1 interview.

Chances of getting an F-1 visa with zero scholarship

I’m looking for some honest advice about the F-1 student visa process.

If a student is admitted to a U.S. university for undergrad but has **no scholarship at all**, and the full tuition + living expenses are being covered by family funds, how does that usually look to the visa officer?

The family can show financial support through bank statements, income/assets, and possibly a family business sponsorship letter. The student’s goal is to study in the U.S. and return after completing the degree.

external scholarships reflect on the I-20?

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student and I had a question about external scholarships and the I-20.

If I receive an external scholarship from an organization outside the university, how would that be reflected on my I-20? Would the scholarship amount reduce the total amount I need to show as financial proof, or would the I-20 still show the full cost of attendance?

For example, if my university’s estimated cost of attendance is $40,000 and I receive a $10,000 external scholarship, would my I-20 show that I only need to prove $30,000 in personal/family funds?

Also, does the scholarship need to be sent directly to the university, or is an official scholarship award letter enough for the school to update the I-20?

Would appreciate advice from anyone who has gone through this. Thank you!

SIE Exam Fee

I am planning to take the SIE exam and wanted to ask about the exam fee. Is the fee $100 USD for everyone, or does it vary depending on the applicant?

Also, are there any vouchers, discounts, or fee waivers available that I could apply for?
