Posted this info on Reddit in the past and faced skepticism. Worse yet, someone followed my suggestions and it didn't go well. So, I've re-written the post as well as doing a video demonstrating why this technique works as well as how to use the recommended shavette or a straight. I have extensive experience with straights.
Why this post? Someone on Reddit spent the big bucks to get a straight and a strop ($200ish) only to give it up within a week. Here is how to to use a disposable Kai Artist Club Shatter to approximate shaving with a straight. We have two topics here:
Notes:
Have you acquired a straight? Shave readiness is required - test as follows. First, pass the blade on your arm 1/2 way between skin & hair end. It should be popping a lot of hairs. Get some hair from the upper chest. Hold the thick end. Attempt to cut w/ a straight through motion-not sawing. It should be cutting the hair on the majority of your attempts. Skeptics may question - I've tested this many, many times and have never had a blade pass both tests that wasn't shave ready.
There are two categories of straights. Actual straights and shavettes. The only shavettes I recommend are the Feather Artist Club style. Kai competes w/ Feather. My 'try before you buy' method, less than $10; uses disposable Kai Artist Club shavettes. Performance is close to a true straight, which is demonstrated in the video.
Here is a summary of the main points in the video:
