Advice for people aspiring to get into the industry?

22M — Looking for advice about getting into the music industry as a guitarist/singer-songwriter

Hey everyone,

I come from a very music-driven family and grew up surrounded by it my whole life. I also have relatives and connections abroad involved in music, including winners/former contestants from shows like The X Factor and The Voice.

For most of my life, I always thought it was cool having people around me involved in that world, but I never seriously considered it for myself beyond just enjoying music casually.

That changed around September 2025.

Over the last year or so, my social circle changed massively for the better. I started meeting more musicians and bands, and I now have fairly regular contact with several smaller bands/artists that are beginning to make a name for themselves. Being around that environment again really reignited something in me and brought back a passion for music that I honestly thought I had lost during my teenage years.

At the same time, it also made me realise that the career path connected to my university degree probably isn’t what I truly want long term.

So I wanted to ask anyone with experience in the industry or anyone who’s been in a similar situation:
What advice would you give to someone trying to get into music seriously at 22 as a guitarist and aspiring singer-songwriter?

Whether that’s: networking, improving as a musician, getting started performing, writing/releasing music, or just navigating the industry in general.

I’d genuinely appreciate any advice or experiences people are willing to share.

Hope you all have a great day x

Looking to make some new friends in Chester :)

22M

So I’ve always been relatively close to Chester all my life and even before moving for uni to the city, once or twice a month I’d always come up to Chester for a day out.

(30-40mins at best not far at all)

As my time in uni comes to an end I’m back in the position of having a pretty small friend circle, a lot of the friends I made are from different parts of the country quite a few hours and they are all going home, and back home I have a few close friends but well they’ve moved away and they have their own partners and lives, normal life stuff.

I would like to meet some new people, make mates while I’m always close and in the city :)

Feel free to drop me a msg if interested would be nice.

Still gaming?

Anyone in this sub Reddit in their 20s still game from time to time?

I’m 22 and occasionally I still game on pc but most the time I enjoy playing on my switch for an hour or two every night more than anything before bed rather than sitting down at my desktop.

I see a lot of Gen Z saying they don’t or they dropped it because it gets to a certain age.

What are your opinions on this, do you think you should stop at a certain age or is it a hobby / chill out time that will always bring you some sort of relief and escapism?

The great time skip of 2021

I remember when I turned 18 in sixth form and my teacher made a joke at the time which to be honest was pretty funny to everyone even myself but I’m now realising how true it is.

“Enjoy 18 as much as you can, because tomorrow you’ll be 48”

Not quite there yet, but I randomly remembered this at 22 today and joked about it with my parents because it’s pretty true.

As my parents constantly say “the days may seem long but the years are short”

Yeah starting to understand it little by little.

I woke and gained cautiousness of life

I’m currently 22 and around February of this year (2026) I remember gaining cautiousness of everything around me being alive, time moving on, inevitable death, around then the last few months since this has happened have been so so hard and draining on me, mentally.

I’m waking up in constant fear and anxiety, as much as I try to suppress it, I can’t, everyone tells me to enjoy life and the joy of being alive but after this happened I’m scared to enjoy anything and the thought of the end is so so terrifying regardless how many years away it is, eventually when I do get there, I’ll wake up at however old in the present and think to myself that my life has went in the blink of an eye because right now waking up at only 22 years of age it feel like it, because up to now I’ve been in auto pilot mode.

I don’t know how I’ve got to this point, 22, in the grand scheme of things incredibly young, hopefully many years ahead of me, I guess my adult life is only just beginning but, I can’t explain why am like this.

I’ve been to GP(doctor) and they put me on anti depressants / anxiety meds, worked well for a little, and then it went back to shit.
