I have a friend whom I have known for more than 5 years. I knew her initially as someone not guided by religion and with liberal mindset. We exchange convos regarding sociopolitical issues, life problems, adulting, fitness, lifestyle, etc. She also has other LGBTQ friends.
Yet, for the recent months, she’s been finding ways to instill faith on her self. Now, she goes to a megachurch. Everytime we catch up, the conversation never missed out topics regarding religion and how Jesus is so good to her.
Recently, she’s been asking me if how do I reconcile with my faith despite my sexual orientation. I told her I still have faith but I abhor bible bigotry and cherry-picking arguments. She expounded something regarding the verses from Leviticus prohibiting homosexuality. I also countered that those verses also prohibit eating shellfish, such as lobster and shrimp, trimming beards, getting tattoos, wearing clothing mixed of fabrics, etc. I highlighted the inconsistency and historical context. Different translations of the bible give different context.
She also expressed that her church has ex-gay people?!? that are sharing testimonials on how God changed them.
The conversations are uncomfy for me. Now, she’s trying to invite me to the megachurch yet I always decline because I also go to my home church every Sunday.
She still wants to connect with me. However, as someone who wants to be at peace with myself, I think I need to slowly unfriend her.
