Title:I don't know how loudly I have to say nor do I care if I get stoned to death for it, but gang, Rem is getting back her memories and yes that is infinitely better than keeping her a amnesiac alongside everyone(but subaru) not remembering her.
Okay, let me explain step by step why Rem is 100% regaining her memories and name.
So let's start off with the most simple reasons first, and let's ramp it to character analysis, themes, and story beats later.
First reason: there are like 5 different ways for Rem to regain her memories, and for her to be unable to use any of them, it would need Tappei to go out of his way to get rid of these methods, which just seem contrived and forced at a certain point.
Let's go down a list of these ways, shall we?
First of all, gluttony. We know damn well that the Gluttony trio all have the same stomach of souls; aka, if one member of the trio eats a person's name/memories and gains that person's abilities, then the other siblings also gain access to them.
For example, all 3 of them have shown the use of the leaper ability (let's put a pin 📌 on the leaper ability because that's a surprise tool for later), and Roy in arc 9 is able to regurgitate both Rem's name and memories despite Lye being the one to eat them.
Now Roy is currently "dead." I'm using heavy quotation marks on this because I highly doubt he's dead.
If Roy is still alive, the cast can either A. torture his ass until he regurgitates Rem's name and memories and probably a couple other names and memories along the way, or B. if he's still alive and Reinhard locks in and gets a divine protection of anti-blackmail and also grows some balls, he can ask for the divine protection of mind-changing again and, as sorry as he is to hunting down the Emilia camp, mind-controls Roy and makes him regurgitate Rem's name and memory as a gift and then deletes the divine protection because of morality or something.
But that's a lot of speculation, and we have to wait and see if Roy is actually dead or if that was a fake body planted by Capella or something.
We then have Spica, who, despite being very different from Louis, still has the same abilities and still shares her siblings' stomach of souls. Which again means she should have the ability to regurgitate Rem's name and memories in the future. But let's put another pin 📌 on this.
Next we have the Holy Sacraments. Filore uses this to not only heal Crusch from the dragon blood but also restores her memories, though I don't know if it can do that for names, cause would she need to use it on Rem pr the people who forget her? But it's still better than nothing.
Filore also shares that other people in Church can use Sacraments too, but it's not a universal ability but still a handful of people being able to restore at least Rem's memories is a giant plus.
Next method is potentially Capella's authority. Okay this method comes about by the belief that Filore is actually just Capella in disguise and that the holy Sacraments is actually just Capella using her authority to manipulate someone's od to restore their memories and also take back her dragon blood. Let's a pin📌 on this.
Next is Subaru and his future potential authorities. 3 to be exact. Wrath, Lust, and Gluttony.
Wrath: Before we get into Subaru's and his future potential with it, let's first look at the current user. Sirius is either straight-up Fortuna or like a fucked-up clone/reanimated body of Fortuna. Like, I hope Tappei doesn't think we're going to be surprised when he inevitably reveals it. They have the same colored hair and exact same eye colorization, even having some of the same blue center in their eyes, also being sanpaku eyes. Sirius is known to be extremely long-lived (like an elf); she's noted to have the highest raw physical strength out of all archbishops (again, like an elf); like Fortuna, she's a powerful fire mage, and she has a love for Petelguese.
Now you might be saying, "What does this have to do with Rem and her memories/name?" And I have to say, shut up like a good little dog, 'cause I'm getting to it.
Now we have Minerva who clearly has some type of connections to elves and Emilia in particular, and her usage of wrath gives her the greatest healing ability in the series.
If Sirius is ever "fixed" either by the power of sage mode Subaru, Emilia's talk no jutsu, or therapy, I highly doubt Tappei is going to have keep the same authority. As we know authorities can evolve and change when their users desires, and outlook also change as seen with Roy's Eclipse Binary, Spica usage of Astral Eclipse, and a little bit when Subaru's Invisible Providence develops thr ability to phase through stuff.
So getting to the point, Sirius/Fortuna could develop an authority that's similar to Minerva's, and that would give her the ability to heal people and potentially Rem.
Now finally on to Subaru himself, if authorities match the users desire, outlook, and personality, than I don't see why Subaru would manifest as something similar Sirius's soulwashing especially considering he something similar in Cor Leonis. Plus healing is something much more aligned with Subaru's character.
Lust: If the Filore is Capella assumptions are correct and that Filore/Capella simply used the authority of lust to fix Crusch, then I see no reason why Subaru with the witch factor couldn't do something similar, unless Tappei wants to see Subaru turn people into flies.
Gluttony: Look, gluttony caused the issue, so it can also fix the issue.
Okay, so I finally laid down the groundwork (yes, that was just the prologue, suck it up).
So now let's say Tappei chooses not to give Rem her memories, right?
First, he would need to get rid of the holy sacraments option by making it so that Filore is actually Capella and the holy sacraments are just her authority or killing Filore and everyone else in the church who can use/teach the holy sacraments.
If he picks option A, Tappei would then need to kill Capella before the gang can force her into helping Rem, and if he does that, then it leads to Subaru gaining the list witch factor, and Tappei would need to deny Rem's memories and give Subaru an ability that doesn't help in that endeavor.
If Tappei does all that, we then have Sirius, who has the potential to be fixed and return back into Fortuna and, as a side effect, awaken a different authority, one that could potentially have healing abilities for Minerva and that can be used to help Rem. If he instead kills Sirius/Fortuna or has him cured by Subaru taking the witch factor/authority and thus denies Fortuna the chance of getting a new authority that can heal Rem, he would then have to give Subaru another ability that doesn't help Rem. So we're now two for two in authorities not helping Subaru in getting back Rem's memories; how wonderful. And speaking of wrath, Omega is currently walking around with the witches around her neck as the world's most mentally insane piece of ice 📿. Yes, I know they can't be manifested in the real world, but it's worth a mention.
If Tappei gets rid of ALL those options, we fall back to gluttony. Roy right now is "dead," but seeing how Roy is one of Capella's children, the possibility of Roy's death actually just being a random person transformed into looking like Roy by Capella is highly likely. But anyways, Tappei would then need to kill Roy "again" before the cast can force him into regurgitating. Rem's name and memories. And now we have Spica...now look, Spica's existence is one of the greatest pieces of evidence for the idea that Rem is going to gain back her name and memories. Why? I want you to read slides 1-3. Did you do that for me? Good, you deserve a little treat; go to your pantry and get yourself a cookie or something. Anyways, what it's basically saying is, "Hey, Spica, for you to be properly forgiven by not only us but the whole world for the heinous crimes you and your siblings have committed, you need to lock in and level up your authority usage so you can start revealing names and memories. " So unless I forgot something, there was a later chapter where Ram was like, "You know what, little Spica? You and the entire world have forgiven you, so you don't need to work on your authority anymore, so you can potentially help your mother figure it out." This is still very much in effect, and Spica is most likely going to be the one to restore Rem's name and memories because if she doesn't, that's development that Spica is missing out on.
So anyways, if Tappei really, really wants to deny Rem's memories and name, he would either kill off Spica (amazing writing \[sarcasm\]) or have it so that she can't do it for no reason despite her literally having the exact same abilities as her brothers and sharing the same stomach of souls and all that. If he does kill Spica by having her do some heroic sacrifice or something, then that just means Subaru gets the Gluttony witch factor. And if Tappei wants to stop this from being the solution, then he would have to once again give Subaru an ability that does not help, despite the fact it would be quite poetic for Subaru to be able to heal Rem due to the sacrifice of their "daughter," who had wanted to also help Rem with her issues but couldn't do so due to tragic circumstances. We're also now 3 for 3 in Tappei giving Subaru authorities with the potential to heal Rem and him instead of getting abilities that don't heal Rem.
P.S, scratch everything I just said about limiting Subaru to only wrath, lust, and gluttony because they're the only ones shown to have any healing abilities/way of restoring memories.
Cause:
Authorities don't care about what previous users have shown, a lazy doctor who wants to save his patients in the quickest and simplest way possible can get the sloth witch factor, and develop a authority called "The Surgeon's hands" where has invisible hands with each finger being surgical equipment, with thr hands being able to inside people od's and heal whatever issues they have. So yeah all 9 witch factors can potentially give/evolve to give Subaru some type of healing/memory based ability.
I completely forgot about Pandora(not that surprising) and the fact she screwed with Emilia's memories as a child, so that's another authority that could potentially heal Rem. And speaking of Pandora and Rem. Crush my balls to Niagara Falls if I'm wrong but to this day we still don't know the exact reasons why Spica got a body and why Rem woke up from her coma yes? If I'm wrong please tell me. We also Pandora controls/creates those fatass white pigeons of hers and that we see in the tower, so who knows maybe Pandora gave Spica a body and trusted Rem out of her coma with her insert vague abilities, who knows I might just be dumb
Anyways so that means Subaru has higher chance of getting a authority that can heal or maybe mess with memories, due to me removing the previous limitations.
Now you remember that pin we placed when talking about the leaper ability shown by the Gluttony Trio, and was originally used by guy named Dorkell? Yeah we're tackling that right now. Dorkell was originally a normal dude until he somehow came face to face with fuckijng Od Lagna....and then he gained the Leaper ability. Now this ability was apparently a hersey among hersey even in the fucking Witch cult, you know, the organization that have authority users, users who's abilities say fuck you to Od Lagna constantly. And this guy gained ability similar to that by meeting Od Lagna by happenstance. Moving on Chisha Gold got his ability Noh by surviving a near death experience.
Why am I mentioning this? Easy, it's because I wanted to show how sometimes characters in Re:Zero just have abilities. Shinobi can just manipulate your OD and turn you into a child; a relatively normal but smart dude can come back from a near-death experience, become albino, and gain a random ability to color himself; and a guy with a wife and kid can meet Od Lagna and gain a short-range teleportation that even the witch cult found too wrong and kicked him out for (this brings up the question of if Subaru also got a unique power since he was in the corridor of memories, which is a part of Od Lagna, but who knows?). Maybe Dorkell's situation was unique.
And why is this important in getting Rem's memories/name back? Simple people in Re:zero sometimes just have bullshit abilities that can't be classified as magic or as a combat technique, and you're telling me no one, absolutely no one has some time of anti-amnesia ability? Bullshit I say.
Okay, we're finally done with part 1. You tired yet, bud? Well, too damn bad we still got more to discuss.
We're now entering character depth, development, themes, etc.
Most important being
•Spica
•Ram/Roswaal
•Subaru
•Rem
Spica: We already tackled it a bit earlier on, but I'll reiterate, one of the only reasons Spica has a chance at redemption for the past actions of Louis is because she has the potential to fix not only Rem's missing name and memories but also everyone who has ever been affected by it. Hell, even Amnesiac Rem acknowledged that this is something Spica has to learn to do.
Ram/Roswaal: I'm gonna keep this one as short as I can cause if continue to talk about these 2 for way too long and I'll get too angry and go on a tangent and blow a blood vessel or something. That and I'm gonna make a another post focusing on these two anyways so I'm gonna save my breath.
Let's focus on Ram first. Ram needs Rem to regain her memories. So she doesn't crash out, as the only real reason she allowed Spica to continue breathing is because she provided one of the biggest chances of getting her sister's name/memories back, and if we look back in arc 6, Subaru simply forgetting who Rem was was enough for Ram to go kind of ballistic, so what do you think is going to happen when she learns her sister's name and memories are forever gone?
I also think Ram needs to tell Rem about all of the secrets she kept from her, such as what exactly happened the night their village was destroyed; Roswaal's plans and book; and the events that led to Annerose becoming an orphan, all without trying to sugarcoat it in order to give Rem a full and complete understanding of everything she has ever gone through. Also, this kind of needed to make their relationship better, as a lot of people have the opinion that yes, Ram loves Rem, but she isn't the best sister—not horrible, just not that amazing, and her doing this would definitely help fight back against it.
And for Roswaal...let's just say that his life and potential relationship with Ram are very much dependent on Rem getting back her memories. As one, I don't think anyone with a conscience is going to accept Roswaal having a good ending without the 11 dead kids being addressed by the whole cast, alongside his other crimes. Rem not only needs to be a part of it, but she needs her memories in order to have a fully formed opinion on the matter.
All that and Ram and Roswaal's "relationship" is currently being carried by the fact all the love Ram had for Rem is being directed towards Roswaal, so that by itself needs to be fixed. Like if I'm being honest, I don't even need to write anything else for this post, just the fact Ram live for Roswaal is being increased to due Rem's situation is enough of a reason to try and get Rem's name and memories back. But I digress
.
Also, FUCK YOU, ROSWAAL.
Subaru: Let me get this off my chest, Rem. Not gaining back her name and memories is not going to help Subaru "grow" or learn a lesson.
Because first off, let's tackle an issue I have with the whole concept, and that's the fact it's not original. The whole Rem suffers something that Subaru can't fix, and it leads to him learning some type of life lesson that was done nearly 10 years ago in arcs 3-4. We are using the same characters and scenario and are also just prolonging an issue rather than bringing something new to the table. There's a reason Taplei is essentially making other characters go through what Subaru did in Arc 3 because it's more interesting to see how those characters parallel Subaru and how they navigate through it, like Julius in Arc 6 and Felix in Arc 10.
Another giant issue I have with the idea that Subaru is going to "learn a lesson" is the fact I don't remember a single time Subaru suffered an emotional gut punch and managed to pull through by himself. In arc 3 he had Rem; arc 4 was Otto; and in arc 6 he had Emilia and various others. In arc 8, after the "no hero?" comment by Rem, Al had to appear like Jason Voorhees to tell Subaru to lock in. In arc 10, Rem had to tell him to stop locking in by himself and let her lock in with him when he was being bummed out due to her memory BS. So tell me, what do you think is going to be Subaru's reaction to learning that one of the most important people in his life is forever going to be forgotten by the world and herself?
Do you think he's going to go "whelp that's sad, but it is what is"? If not, than please tell who's going to drag him out of his 100% guaranteed depression? Ram? Miss she almost went insane just cause Subaru forgot Rem, not that Rem died or something, no Subaru forgot Rem and that was enough for her to kinda almost lose her oddamn mind, you think that Ram is going to comfort Subaru? Do I have to explain why Amnesiac Rem would br kinda to preoccupied to comfort Subaru? What's next you think Roswa-HAHAHAHA sorry that was joke, yeah right, Roswaal mister I hope you become like me Mathers, telling someone to get over and accept the loss of someone. And besides those, anyone else who tries is going to fail cause mirroring Minerva, wrong message and wrong messages.
Cause again the fact Rem had the chance of recovery is like the only reason Subaru isn't more depressed about the situation than he should be, if he learns his one slip up from almost 2 years led to Rem being permanently forgotten and having amnesia, I would be suprised if he let Otto leave the mansion without Garfiel, Reinhard, Wilhelm, and Patrasche hanging along for his safety out of trauma.
Rem: Okay, first off, let's address the elephant in the room, that being the people who think Arc 9 Rem was just her reverting back to her old self and discarding any development she got when she had amnesia. c. First off, just no, just actually no. Second off, I want you to read Yae vs. Rem and tell me if Rem would be able to say or do the things she did pre-arc. 7-8, third off Rem, plenty of times has shown that her amnesiac side is still in there, be it by calling Subaru "that person," glazing Priscilla, or the fact her previous memories and opinions of others still affect the way she sees others, such as Al. But besides that, why are we surprised that the Rem with like 18 years' worth of memories has more control and prominence than the Rem that has existed for like a month or 2? People talk about Amnesiac Rem and how her independence and self-confidence should have been more prominent in her character and how she should be dominating the older Rem and stuff... Gang, Amnesiac Rem isn't Hal Jordan. You think like 18 years' worth of trauma, self-loathing, dependency issues, and other mental issues are going to be mentally overridden that easily?????
And the one scene that people really want to overexaggerate is the scene where Rem almost decides to break her fingers. When I first saw people talking and complaining about this scene, I thought Rem was like in public making a big fuss and was having a mental breakdown over what she did to Subaru and, overall, was imagining a much worse scene. But I reread it, and dawg, dawg, this was the most calm thing I've seen. I'm honestly surprised at how calm it is. And in fact, this scene itself makes sense.
Because first, let's establish something real quick, okay? Get close to me (looks side to side). Amnesiac Rem likes Subaru, yes—shocker, I know. Now you guys can argue whether it's fully platonic, platonic with an undertone of romance, or fully romantic on Rem's side, but either way she likes Subaru and doesn't hate him.
Now let's establish something else: Amnesiac Rem already feels guilty about the shit she did in Vollachia, and she believes she first needs to atone via action before she can face Subaru and apologize.
So Amnesiac Rem's baseline already likes Subaru and already feels incredibly guilty for the shit she had done to him...so what the hell do you guys think is going to happen when you already have this and mix in Old Rem's memories, which include a ridiculous amount of love for Subaru, which was only going to increase with the added memories of Amnesiac Rem, and a tendency to hate/blame herself more, all while both personalities have a tendency to go with the most extreme option... Oh yeah, you're going to get a scene where that person feels like they need to feel the same pain they put their beloved through.
This is simple math, gang.
And speaking of love. A lot of people who want to argue that Amnesiac Rem will/should be a permanent character love to spam the "If Tappei keeps Amnesiac Rem permanently, then he won't have to deal with the whole Subaru love triangle bs and can just have him get with Emilia!"
Now first off I'd just like to say if Tappei ever did that, it would create a wave of Emilia slander never seen before, as it would Emilia only won cause her opponent in Subaru's love got taken out by outside circumstances and bs plot. Not saying she deserves it but it will happen.
Secondly and most importantly, that idea itself is completely unfounded. Cause again Amnesiac Rem already likes Subaru, and maybe already even loves him deep down.
But lets also look at the final scene before the great reset in arc 9 where Rem is talking about her love for Subaru.....did you do that? Good, get another cookie or treat. So now that you read that whole scene interpret it as you want but hot take it points a lot more to the whole Amnesiac Rem has or will fall in love with Subaru again due to his action.
But let's also take a look at Fused Rem's final line in the arc.
Once more, please make my current self... please make Rem fall in love with you again.
Or
Please let me… Let Rem fall in love with you all over again.
Now there are like 3 ways we can interpret this line. But first let's make something clear: when Rem AND Tappei are talking about love, they're not talking about platonic, familial, or whatever type of love; they mean romantic. Let's get that straight.
A. Rem is asking for Subaru to make her fall in love again by making her regain her memories again, essentially making it so that Rem's soul/body falls in love again.
B. She is asking him to make her fall in love with him again in a more metaphorical sense in that Subaru's actions in bringing her back cause her to feel like she fell in love all over again.
C. She's asking him to rizz up her amnesiac self.
But it doesn't matter, as all 3 of these interpretations all lead to the argument of Tappei using Rem's amnesia as a get-out-of-jail-free card in dealing with Subaru's love life being completely invalid.
Well, with option C, it not only invalidates it, but it also brings up the question, "What does Amnesiac Rem actually do for the end of Re:Zero by staying forever?"
Because people always say, "Amnesiac Rem has more potential than Original Rem," but for the love of Od, I have yet to see a single person actually elaborate on this so-called potential. Potential for what exactly?
She doesn't solve the "love triangle" debacle.
It doesn't open up any new branches for Rem's character and instead stops original Rem's character's traits and plot points from being answered or fully addressed in an actually healthy manner.
It actively stagnates other characters' growth or makes them grow in a way that isn't healthy for them (cough cough Ram's BS love for Roswaal).
And at a certain point you have to agree Rem's memory problems are an issue that's kind of overstaying its welcome. It's a problem that's been around for nearly a decade. A decade, 10 whole years, manga have been created and finished during that length of time; a man who was 17 reading Rem's name and memories being eaten is now 27 with a wife and kids.
It's also just a disservice to basically every character involved, from Subaru, Ram, Rem, and Spica; it does nothing for them, and it especially does nothing for most of the fans.
But before I go, let me bring up another argument that people who either want/expect Rem to not regain her name and memories love to spam: "If she does, it would invalidate her sacrifice in arc 9"............
Okay, let me use a hypothetical: If I and, let's say, 20 other people were wrongfully imprisoned for life, and I decided to stay behind and sacrifice myself to let those 20 other people escape, and then 10 years later, after many trials and what not, those 20 guys get me out of prison, did my sacrifice suddenly become in vain because I got out?
How something a little close to home, yeah? Every time Subaru kills himself to save someone, I would not consider that a sacrifice on Subaru's part.
Or how about Rem dying to the whale? It got reset and fixed, so does that sacrifice mean nothing? All the emotions and stuff involved are suddenly invalidated???
Rem's sacrifice in arc 9 isn't going to be invalidated because she gets her memories back, because a sacrifice doesn't care if you get rewarded or saved later on; you still willingly put yourself in terrible situations for the sake of others.
Rem doesn't know what will happen when Subaru loops; for all she knows, she's throwing away her only way of having her name and memories back by doing this. For all she knows, by doing this, it could lead to a completely different outcome where she might only get back her memories and name 10, 20, or 50 years later, or maybe not at all. Yet she still went through with it. Despite how realistic that is, it's a terrifying prospect, because really imagine it with me: you lose your memories and then get some back one day. You and your amnesiac self are conflicting because it feels like there are 2 minds in one body, but then you face an option that would revert you back to your amnesiac self. Wouldn't that feel like death for the original self? And my answer is yes, not only regarding real life but also in Re:Zero.
"It is often said that memories are what shape people."
Spica got a second chance at life because without her memories of her life as Louis, she's essentially a different person, and Louis is basically defeated/killed. What's the difference here? Rem not getting back her memories is effectively just killing her off if we're being honest with ourselves.
For Original Rem, this action is as close to suicide as it can get without actually being suicide, and she still did it; she still killed Subaru to restart the world.
The emotions and everything in that action aren't going to be invalidated just because Rem eventually gets back her name and memories; it can only be invalidated if Tappei writes horribly on purpose.
God that was exhausting to write.
But before I end this post let me ask this question one more time:
What does Amnesiac Rem actually do for Rem and everyone else related to Rem and her situation by becoming a permanent thing? I don't want vague "she has a lot more potential than Original Rem" or "she has more interesting dynamics with the cast" or whatever, give me a actual concrete answer with evidence.Cause thr things I just listed now are things that not only either subjective, but also seemingly ignore the fact that major driving force behind why Amnesiac Rem is so interesting is cause she's a Amnesiac version of a character we already know/like.
Her relationship with Subaru especially early on would mean absolutely nothing if it wasn't for thr fact we know that original Rem absolutely loved Subaru. Her relationship with Katya is interstellar cause it's "Rem's" first friend without her memories or past experiences effecting her way of viewing herself or other people, her current relationship with Ram is interesting cause we can sense the undertone of desperation and sadness felt by the two being unable to to remember each other.
No hate to Amnesiac Rem, but her character is carried by the fact it has a massive backdrop in Original Rem.
Cause really think about it, some people already hate Amnesiac Rem for what she did to Subaru in Vollachia despite her coming her around eventually, and that's with the knowledge that she's still Rem and is victim of Amnesia. So imagine the type of hate she would get if she qas actually just a brand new character.
Arc 7 starts this new person comes in smells the Miasma on Subaru, chokes him, and proceeds to protect a archbishop despite not knowing the situation and the potential danger they're in. I can already see the slander.
And again this isn't a dig against Amnesiac Rem, she's necessary growth period for Rem as a character, but her existence as a Amnesiac version of a already beloved character is what defines her, Rem as character can exist without Amnesiac Rem, Amnesiac Rem is dependent on the original Rem to be as interesting as she is.
And finally, a goal for a Amnesiac character of Rem's type is to finally get back her memories and to compartmentalize all her experiences inorder to come out a better version than the sum of her two halves.
Anyways, have a good day, thanks for coming to my Ted talk, I'm gonna go work on my next Roswaal hate piece now
