For the past 12 years, I have been the primary caregiver and financial provider for my elderly mother and my brother. This responsibility is still ongoing, and I have had no meaningful help or support. It has required me to put much of my own life, dreams, time, and finances on hold.
I am now in my mid 40s, and I often grieve the years that have passed. I feel as though some of the most beautiful years of my youth were consumed by obligations I could not walk away from. The financial losses are significant, but what hurts even more is knowing that time can never be recovered. No amount of money can buy back the opportunities, experiences, or freedom that have already slipped away.
One of the hardest parts is watching life move forward for everyone around me. I see friends and colleagues getting married, raising children, advancing in their careers, traveling, and building lives that seem to unfold naturally. I'm genuinely happy for them, but I can't help feeling that my own life has been on hold while theirs kept moving. It's a painful comparison, even though I know everyone's journey is different.
I'm not looking for solutions or praise. I know this is simply the reality I have been living. I just need to vent and ask for your words of comfort and wisdom. How do I make peace with a life that has demanded so much of me? How do I carry this weight without becoming bitter over everything I've lost? I've become so cynical/bitter lately...Thanks in advance for your wisdom!
For those of you who've been out of the workforce (or barely hanging on part-time) or stuck in the same job for a decade or more while caregiving — how did you deal with a job market that's moved on without you? Outdated skills, huge resume gaps, no recent references, an industry that's changed completely — and the depression that hits once you realize all of this at once.
Or maybe you never left, but you've been stuck in the same role for years with no promotion, no growth, and no energy left to fight for more because caregiving eats everything you have outside of work.
Did you settle into the stagnant job because it was stable enough to survive on? Or did you just accept that the career you imagined is gone and try to build something else entirely?
I think a lot of us quietly lose our professional identity — whether by falling out of the workforce or just getting stuck in place — and it's rarely acknowledged how hard that is to face once the caregiving finally slows down...
Has anyone else tried something similar? Curious if long, unhurried walks specifically (vs. other exercise) have made a noticeable difference for your insomnia, and if so, roughly how long/how often you walk.?
Lately I've noticed I want sugary stuff way more than actual meals — like my body is specifically asking for junk instead of normal food. I've read that poor sleep can mess with hunger hormones and make hyper-palatable foods more appealing. Has anyone else experienced this? Could bad sleep actually be driving these cravings, and is this part of why it gets easier to gain weight when sleep quality tanks? and how to at least reduce it, don't wana say completely stop sugar, but is there any way to cope? Thanks!
I keep seeing advice like "just start working out" or "cardio will help your symptoms," but I'm curious how people actually manage this in practice. If you're dealing with constant fatigue (from UARS, poor sleep, brain fog, etc.), how do you find the energy or motivation to exercise regularly?
Does it get easier over time? Did you have to start incredibly small? Or is there some other approach that made it doable despite the exhaustion. Thanks
