I helped a turtle cross the road but think I stressed it out too much and now it’s not moving. Advice needed
Edit: THE TURTLE WAS AOKAY, and it moved right after I posted this lol. I didn’t even realize this post went through because right after I tried to submit it, I got a notification saying “Sorry, your post was removed by Reddit’s filters”. Whoops. Thank you for the advice though!
Hi, I’m hoping this is the right subreddit for this question. I just saw a turtle crossing the road in front of my house. It’s a road with a 50mph speed limit and right now it’s super busy because of afternoon traffic. I quickly ran out and helped it cross, thankfully before it was run over, but then I panicked and didn’t know how FAR to move it. I knew to move it in the direction it was moving, but since there’s no shade anywhere and tons of concrete and townhouses I couldn’t decide whether to just move it into the open grass right next to the road, or 100ft+ farther down where I know there’s a small wetland area with cover.
My own perfectionism made me do something completely idiotic, which was to cross the road back to my house with the turtle in hand, and go INSIDE my air conditioned home for 30 seconds (with the turtle) to grab my phone to look up how far to move it.
After realizing my stupidity and realizing I should have just moved it slightly away from the road, I put down the turtle in the grass 30 feet from the road (no shade anywhere on that side of the road). I’ve been watching the turtle out of my window and after 20 minutes it still hasn’t moved.
How worried should I be? I know I stressed the fuck out of the turtle, but did I severely disorient it too? How long will it be fine exposed in the open? It’s 88°F out and the sun is beaming. After a certain amount of time, should I go move it 100ft+ from the road where I know there’s a small wetland area? Should I bring it back to the big pond behind my home where it came from as a last resort (this feels like a huge no no because it’ll probably just try to cross again). Or should I stay hands off no matter what?
Are there any extensions/apps/settings for translating Spanish subtitles on Telemundo into English ?
I’m not sure if this is the right subreddit to ask this question in, but I thought maybe you’d be more familiar with tools like this. I’ve been watching the World Cup on Telemundo because I’m annoyed by the amount of ads on fox and love the energy of the Telemundo presenters. Although, I started slowly learning Spanish this year, I know no where near enough words to even vaguely understand the Spanish subtitles, but would still like to know what the presenters are saying.
Peacock doesn’t provide English subtitles, only Spanish. **Are there any Apple IOS settings, apps, or other tools that I could use to translate the live Spanish subtitles into English? Or are there any other streaming services I could use to watch Telemundo that do have English subtitles?**
Gracias!!
What glue can I use to fix paperback?
I have a book that I’ve had for many years but hadn’t gotten around to reading until now. Even though it’s never been read, the first 20 pages are detaching from the spine, and every time I turn a page, the split goes farther up. I’m hoping I can add some glue at the spine and reattach them. What type/brand of glue is best for the job?
Thank you in advance!
Sad update to orphaned mallard duckling situation: haven’t been able to catch them, and 2 have been eaten by predators
I’m devastated and feel so guilty. Yesterday there were 4. Early this morning there were still 4, but at 10am only 3 remained. We weren’t able to catch them by hand, so we went and bought a net and tried again. Eventually when even that didn’t help, we got help from our neighbors who have a boat. For 1.5 hours we tried to catch them from the boat and the pond edge, but they kept swimming away and we couldn’t corner them.
Unfortunately, at one point while the ducklings were in the middle of the pond, we saw the last duckling keep going under, until eventually it didn’t come up. At first I thought maybe it was weighed down by muck, but I now think it was preyed on by a bass fish or a snapping turtle. So now there are only 2 left and I’m feeling horribly depressed and guilty. I feel like it’s my fault the third one died. I know it’s the circle of life, but I feel horrible I put them through so much stress trying to catch them, only to fail and also end up with a worse situation than before.
I’ve stopped trying to grab them for now because I was getting worried I was putting them through too much stress and also the bass are more active at sunset, so the risk is higher. I called the rehabber and they also recommend I leave them alone for now.
I guess I’ll try again tomorrow morning but I don’t have high hopes anymore. I hate whoever drove over and killed their mom. These ducklings are 3 weeks old (according to when the neighbor saw them hatch) and they’ve been on their own for a week.
Baby mallard ducks all alone
Do mallard ducks ever leave their babies completely alone? We have a pond in our backyard, about 1 acre in size, over the last couple months we’ve had lots of visitors, including two pairs of geese and their babies, and a mallard duck pair (albeit I only saw them together once or twice, and saw the male by itself more often).
I just noticed roughly four baby ducks in the water at the edge of the pond, eating huddled together, but there is no adult in sight. From far away they appear to be mallard ducklings. Should I be worried? Should I just keep observing them from far away or call a local wildlife rehabber and ask for their advice?
About 3-7 days ago (I can remember exactly when) there was a dead bird in the road. I thought it was maybe a bird of prey that had gotten killed while trying to eat a smaller mammal (I thought I saw fur along with the feathers), but now, after looking at pictures of adult mallard duck wings, I think it’s completely possible the dead bird was a female duck. However, I don’t know how these ducklings could have survived almost a week without their mom, and the pond is roughly 150/200 feet from the road, so not sure ifs possible for them to have made it to the pond by themselves. (EDIT: I just checked the leftover feathers/ carcass that’s on the side of the road, and I’m now 1000% sure it was their mom that was killed 😭😭😭😭. The feathers had some of the dark blue coloring that female mallard ducks have. I had come to terms that these duckling were orphaned, but the confirmation really fucking stings. And to know they most likely witnessed their mom getting run over…. 😭🥺🤬)
I’m located in Missouri, and we’ve had warm nights and days, and I guess the pond has a lot of food so it’s probably plausible they’ve been on their own for days and survived.
I apologize for the quality of the picture it was taken from far away.
