Needing Sage Advice Two Old Trucks.

In the next month or so I will have the opportunity of getting an 1989 Single Cab Short Bed 2wd. The 89 is a one owner and has been parked in a barn for at least 5 years. It burns oil and will most likely need the engine overhauled. My guess is that it has around 150k miles.

I already have a 2005 Silverado z71 crew cab that I don’t use very much since moving up to a 2022. It has been a good truck, but I am not in love with it. I let my father-in-law use if for Home Depot runs and it is pushing 265k. I am the 3rd owner and have had it since 86k. It is practical since more than 3 people can fit comfortably.

I live in the DFW metroplex and I know reliably breaking and keeping an engine consistently cool is critical.

My wife will not let me keep all three trucks. To get the 89 mechanically refreshed it will cost around 10k. The 89 runs and drives, but the end result is reliability.

To get the 05 refreshed, I am thinking it will take around 10k. I got the top end overhauled 50k ago and got the rear main seal done about 20k ago. I currently running throw the grimlins with the duel automatic climate control. I know the transmission and radiator will need reworking at some point. I have pulled a trailer maybe 4 times since owning the truck.

Another thought as well, is that I will never be able to have these trucks ever again for this cheap. They are solid and haven’t been customized or abused.

I will need to sell one of the old trucks at some point. They are both awesome, but it’s like comparing apples to oranges at the moment. Any suggestions or advice is much appreciated.

Another Longtime Business Gone: R.I.P. Big Dave’s Cigar’s

Just drove by the Camp Bowie location it looks like they are renovating the store front. The dog wash is still open and it looks like the snow cone shop and old Taco Bell are being gutted as well.

Community Input 1989 Silverado

I’ll be as brief as I can. My dad is 76 and my uncle passed a couple of years ago. My aunt is now wanting to downsize and sell off the last of the family land. This will probably happen in the next year or so. My dad is wanting to sell off my grandfathers 1989 OBS (90s body) Chevrolet Silverado 2wd with 350 engine original owner. It has been parked in the shop for a few years. My wife isn’t too keen about the truck since it needs fresh paint and probably an engine rebuild. It has good bones, but doesn’t look its best currently. I would love to keep the truck and fix it up, but my resources are kind of thin with a growing family. I also have an 2005 Silverado quad cab that I may sell off to fund this venture. I can probably get the engine word done reasonably since the truck is in rural Texas. I will then have to get the truck hauled to DFW. Should I just say screw it and find another one of these trucks at some point?

“Have you ever regretted letting a family heirloom go?”

My dad is 76, and my aunt is preparing to sell the last of the family land that has been in our family for generations. As part of that process, my dad is considering selling my grandfather’s old Chevy pickup.
My grandfather bought the truck new, and it’s been part of the family for as long as I can remember. It’s currently parked in a shop and has been sitting for several years. It will need paint, mechanical work, and some money invested before it’s back on the road.
The problem is that I’m at a stage in life where resources are stretched pretty thin. My wife and I have a young child, and any money I put toward the truck is money that can’t go somewhere else. I also have another pickup that I’d likely need to sell if I decided to keep and restore my grandfather’s truck.
Part of me says it’s just a vehicle and I can always buy another square-body/OBS Chevy later. The other part of me knows that while I can buy another truck, I can never buy back my grandfather’s truck once it’s gone.
For those who have been in a similar situation, did you keep the family vehicle or let it go? Looking back, do you regret your decision either way?
I’m not looking for values or buying/selling advice—just hoping to hear from people who have faced a similar crossroads.

Auto Mechanic Recommendations

Hey Everyone, I know this question pops up every few months. I am looking for an honest shop or mechanic. Needing transmission fluid and filter change for 2022 Silverado. Also looking front break work for a 2021 Hyundai Tucson. Hiley Auto Group and Auto Nation has done horrible work and I am looking for better options. Currently located in central FW so going North, East, South, or West is no biggie.
