is it just me or is anti-social behaviour so prevalent on Perth’s cycling paths?

Title. i cycle regularly yet almost every week when I cycle I encounter people intimidating/bullying me for no apparent reason. today someone rolled down their car window and mockingly screamed a loud "oi" for no reason at me which got me disorientated. I was on the cycling path. Later today heading home these two teenage dudes in kids bikes were blocking both sides of the bike path, intentionally going slow and were smirking. I waited for them to make way, and rang my bell, but they just continued laughing. I just ran past them trying to avoid hitting them and they were just laughing. On the top of my head, I remember some bloke just scream "fucking idiots" on a bicycle as we were sharing a sidewalk when I was on the correct side of the road. Just walking along a cycling path once, staying to the left some teenage blokes on a motorbike in the bike path let out a big "FUCK YOU" with a middle finger to me for doing absolutely nothing.

I’m a 5 foot 6 Asian male and I know Australia can get racist, but I really try every fucking day to think that these micro agressions are not borne out of my appearance but it hurts thinking about it.

Lived in the Netherlands for two years at the height of COVID and I’ve NEVER had these problems save for the occasional scooter rider speeding past (but they don’t really interact with you). I’m really starting to think that this is because of how I look. It’s super duper shit and massively affects my self-esteem.

and before someone jumps to conclusions, yes I’ve got my helmet on. yes I put my lights on at whatever is the legislated time of the day it is mandatory.

Second job alongside FIFO role?

hey guys, was wondering how many people here do a second job alongside FIFO, and if so, how many of you guys do it. I’m on an 8:6 roster as a grad and I have absolutely nothing to do once I’m on my R&R in Perth. no friends no hangouts no dating life, nothing. I need a second job so I don’t go spiralling and also to have a bit more money when I go on vacation overseas. moreover even back at uni I always struggled to get any leads for any casual roles, so I was thinking of some resume advice geared towards landing casual roles in retail, colesworths etc.

and if anyone’s got recommendations feel free to do so.

p.s. I dont have a car

For those doing FIFO, how do you guys make friends/meet people?

title. former international student from Adelaide turned graduate and now working in the mines.

Only moved here cos I had a mining gig, but most of the time I feel super lonely. I miss the road trips I’ve made back in Adelaide, the clubs the pubs the casual sports games the birthday parties the beach trips and all that. I consider myself a bit introverted but I was out every day in Adelaide since I sort of passed met people by chance quite often, which doesn’t seem to be the case here.

I’m burning through my visa at the moment since all I think about is leaving but unfortunately it’s been hard to find an entry-level position back home in my field hence I’m slugging it out to get more experience while I can.

Where do you guys meet people or do fun stuff together with? I’m really keen to do photography, short hikes, weekend day trips, beach outings and whatnot. Fuck I’d love to go clubbing and just sing all that pop music, but its exceptionally hard

Stay at Perm Role or Go Contract for Higher Pay as a Temporary Visa Holder?

title. Recent graduate (~7 months out) from an Aussie university and a current grad visa holder.

I’m currently employed as a grad in the mines in WA (FIFO) for 105k base + bonus + super (TC will most likely be around 130k incl. bonuses, + some perks). It’s a permanent role but technically it hinges on me getting PR here by myself, which I’m not keen on getting. I do feel like I have a chance to learn a lot here but with the temporary nature of my stay here I‘d just want to earn as much money and save it for myself, and I’ve been struggling to land a role in my home country despite the much lower pay + supposed "opportunities" in mining there. So now I’m left with an ultimately useless degree but at least I have a job for some time?

Surprisingly I’ve been approached by recruiters quite often as a grad. One offer came up (1 year contract w/ renewal) that would pay me $650 day rate on a 2:2, *AND* in the state where I did uni in, which means I get to earn a tad bit more (125-130,000k plus super) but more importantly I get to live in the state where I did uni in, but I’d learn less.

I want to go back to my home country after my visa ends, or perhaps explore another country better suited for me. The problem is, I’ve already left a previous grad role I got right after uni since they were shit, and I fear that having a history of hopping around would ruin my chances elsewhere I apply for work in. Moreover, moving to Perth while barely knowing anyone is a massive pain and it’s been making me depressed and uber lonely.

On the flip side, I at least get to maximise the time I have on my visa with people that I care about, and make a bit more (like, 50k more over the course of my visa which I can use for savings (goes a long way back in my country) and travel. Note that I’m not supporting anyone and my parents are financially well-endowed but as long as I’m working I don’t intend on asking for any support from them.

Thoughts?

what careers can I get outside of mining? Or should i give up geology entirely

title. asian bloke from a third world country, not aussie, studied in australia for my geology degree. turns out, I cannot find a job in my home country related to my degree. hence im sticking it out here in the mines in australia until my visa ends as a grad. but i dont see a future with my degree, especially back home nor elsewhere.

thing is, i dont fucking know where this stupid useless degree will take me, especially after my visa ends. i did not expect to have such a hard time finding a job back home when i thought having overseas experience would give me some sort of edge. i dont care if i get paid peanuts as long as i get to live with my family who will provide for me and let me live under their roof. i hate the mines especially since i have to drive and while i have an australian license im still fairly inexperienced with driving. i hate the idea that my parents though comfortable spent thousands for a degree that is not getting me a single job back home. I’ve only got two years left on my visa and while finding a job here isn’t hard im essentially on a glorified temporary contract given my time is limited

with that in mind, what other jobs can i get where a geology degree? or is it better to drop geology entirely. Im genuinely fucking scared of my future and ive applied to every job possible back home: geotech, enviro consutling, even mining again, all to no avail

Profile salary match on seek, how accurate

title. got a new role as a grad, on 105k base + 10% bonus and then super on top. Which works out to be AT LEAST 117k to 130,000 depending on whether it includes bonuses or not.

Now a week after signing a contract with my employer, they posted an opening for graduates in the same role. I just saw it on seek and tweaked my salary expectations. Lo and behold, it got matched with the 125,000 figure, no more, no less.

frankly I’m pissed. I don’t know whether Seek’s salary match includes bonuses, but for someone the same role as me to get 10-20k more (assuming super isn’t included in that figure) is horrendous

How does the OEC work? I’m on an Australian grad visa and about to start work soon

Getting a job soon as a fairly recent graduate of an Australian university. I’ve recently heard of the OEC, and while I have managed to leave the PH last March with a job as the IO didn’t ask for anything, I’m concerned how this would affect my future visits back home.

My concern is, I travel back home to the Philippines quite often (because I care about seeing family and get homesick) but now that I will be starting work again, I don’t know when I can apply for an OEC. I’ve heard that a number of Filipinos had their job offers rescinded because of this OEC thing, and while it’s important for many OFWs that often get exploited, grabe lang ang hassle for white collar professionals. Dagdag perwisyo wtong gobyerno na gusto mo nalang makita pamilya at mga aso niyo pero lintik na gobyernong ito walang kwenta

(and just a rant but why the fuck is the philippine government genuinely restarted? ampota i wouldn’t be here in australia if jobs back home weren’t so competitive, not even minding the salary! willing na nga ako magtrabaho for monthly salaries na barya lang dito yet I’m constantly ghosted there while I’m getting headhunted for companies here, in my field of study, as a FRESH GRADUATE??

Fortescue on a hiring spree for entry-level rig geos?

title. I’m a recent grad and left my previous role. I’ve been applying for grad/entry level geo roles and I can’t help but notice that a lot of the mining recruitment agencies that got back to me are advertising a role for Fortescue. Heck, one agency even reached out to ME through my Seek profile, same role, same pay, same roster, either at Solomon or Cloudbreak.

All of them are temp-to-perm opportunities as a rig geo, ideally looking for someone early in their career, mine geology experience/exposure etc.

A few things I wanted to ask:

1.) why is Fortescue seeking people for this role through recruitment agencies, as opposed to directly advertising it?

2.) all the roles are temp to perm contracts. What advantages does this have (in Fortescue’s context at least)? I understand that temp to perm removes a bit of complication wrt hiring and firing, especially to assess someone’s competency on the role, but wouldn’t the 6 month probationary period be sufficient?

3.) any reasons for this oddly specific hiring drive? Based on my phone screens with them they seem to be looking for very specific candidates. but it felt like these positions were something that a grad geo could fill?

Can’t get a job in the mines due to not being able to drive - any geology-related jobs with transferrable skills from the mines that I can get despite not having a license?

title. I have a geology degree from an Australian uni and while amazingly I have no trouble landing interview invites/phone screens I *struggle* to get a written offer once I mention only having an overseas license (which is understandable, but I know a few still do on an occasional basis), but ever since having to grind tests and lessons out *within the span of a month* I kept on failing my driving test from anxiety (I have OCD).

I’m desperate for a job that could get me started on any career related to my degree, even enviro - and actually give me relevant learning experience so I can just jet off with my career. Yet the vast majority of companies that have called me back are WA mining companies. As much as I want to give up and go back to my home country and even get paid peanuts just to get some semblance of experience, my degree is essentially fuck all useless as I’ve had zero luck with applying back home. I had to quit my previous grad role with a junior ASX-listed one as their operations genuinely had fuck all safety, zero learning opportunities, and blatant racism/purple circle sorta shit, but I feel stupid for quitting despite that place being a huge burden on both my physical and mental health.

tl;dr looking for career opportunities relevant to a geology degree that *doesn’t* require an Aussie license? (or, alternatively, even ones that are fine with an Auto license because then I’d feel much more confident in doing a test in an Automatic)?

— ADDITIONAL CONTEXT —

I had a company "hold" their offer for a grad mine geo position because despite the fact that I’ve mentioned several times that I only have an overseas license and that I can drive on Australian soil (as I’m on a visa and don’t intend on living here permanently) AND despite HR saying several times it wouldn’t be an issue, their updated policy THREE days before I was supposed to fly out told me that they actually can’t give me an offer without a manual Australian license, yet they are still waiting for me to get it a month after I got the verbal offer, did pre-medicals paid by them, and reference checks - much to my dismay when I declined a small explorer‘s offer after having an in-person interview with them, and them saying that my overseas license would not be an issue (the first company seemed to offer more benefits, stability, and ESPECIALLY learning opportunity, but same pay).

I’m not spectacular by any means but the two-pages of my resume are full, have good grades, plenty of extracurriculars, local and international internships (one being at an Australian mine site), good references etc. Even then I’m having trouble getting any response like a casual job with Colesworth/hospo/retail any industry BUT WA mining.

I have an overseas license but I barely drove on it once I got it 5 years ago and not used to driving a manual at all. I am going into my fifth attempt at a WA manual license test (which I blazed through with lessons with 7 different instructors and vehicles *in a month* to get me up to speed with Aussie road rules and unlearning bad habits), and despite my instructor already confident that I would pass and doing really well on my lessons I keep on failing my test since my anxiety gets the best of me (I have OCD) to the extent that I’d palpitate or my leg would shake and give up on the clutch, even though this would never happen when I’m just driving as normal.

Is the Hays salary guide accurate for geo roles?

title. I’ve received a number of interviews for a grad position as a geo, and I’ve always been given an amount that seems to be on the low side for pay.

for example, Norton Gold Fields (as from my interview) had a base salary of 80-85k + 12k allowance. This despite the company getting good reviews on seek for "high pay" when the going rate as per Hays was 120k base pay for a grad. another company was offering 105k base, with a decent bonus scheme but I just can’t shake off the feeling that I’m just being lowballed given what the Hays salary guide’s published.

Thing is, I’m a graduate visa holder, and while I’m not fussed about the pay I’m getting, I can’t help but feel like I’m very much so lowballed for these positions just because I’m on a visa. I’m defos not expecting manager levels of pay lmao, but I quit a previous grad geo role partly because of pay being on the low side as per Hays plus a lack of a bonus structure (coupled with the fact that safety was nonexistent and I was being given higher standards + workload over my coworkers who have been in the industry for much linger than I have been). I had a mining vaccy program and they paid all the interns the same amount, so I don’t know if this was a case-by-case thi Ng. Am I overthinking or?

Moving to Canada from Australia and thinking of a career pivot

hey guys, for context I’m on a graduate visa here in Australia and currently working as a grad geo in mining. was thinking of moving to Canada for personal reasons and perhaps pivot to a different career path while I’m at it.

Assuming visa status would not be an issue, what m career options can I consider that would make sense coming from a geology background, oil and gas? engineering consulting? mining? will they also look favourably on Australian geology experience? Also considering doing something completely different - perhaps a job with a higher salary ceiling
