[DIY] My Custom Cyberpunk Tactical Vest with Modular LED RIG / Spine Light /

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share my latest DIY project: a custom Cyberpunk Tactical Vest that I’ve been building.

The main goal was to create a futuristic armor piece that looks functional, high-tech, and heavily inspired by sci-fi universes like Cyberpunk 2077 and Dead Space.

Here is a quick breakdown of how I put it together:

  1. The Concept & Features
  • The "Spine" Light: The core feature is a segmented, vertical LED module mounted directly onto the back. It gives off a heavy "health bar / power core" vibe.
  • The Harness System: I used heavy-duty tactical straps and a rigid upper plate to form a lightweight, wearable frame.
  • Top Shoulder Module: I added a distinctive hot-pink/orange accent light on the shoulder to contrast with the deep cyber-blue of the spine.
  1. Materials & Components
  • Base Frame: [Specify the material, e.g., modified plastic shell, EVA foam, or 3D printed plate]
  • Straps: Tactical webbing and heavy-duty buckles.
  • Electronics: [e.g., 12V LED strips, a compact power bank hidden inside, or Arduino/controller] for the lighting effects.
  1. What’s Next / Future Upgrades

This is still a work in progress! Here is what I’m planning to add next:

  1. Weathering and Paint: I'm going to add scuffs, industrial decals, and warning labels to give it a gritty, lived-in look.
  2. More Hardware: Adding faux wiring, cyberware ports, and maybe a small pouch or pocket for the battery pack.
  3. Front Plate: Building a matching front chest piece to complete the tactical look.

I’d love to hear your thoughts or any feedback on how to improve the sci-fi look. Let me know what you think!

Inkscape Geometry Riddle: Can you decipher the hidden message inside this stepped vector maze?

I wanted to try something interactive with Inkscape’s grid system today and designed a geometric puzzle.

Along this stepped vector contour, there are letters, numbers, and symbols perfectly aligned to the cells. If you find the right path and read them in the correct sequence, they spell out a hidden message/phrase.

Let's test your internal processing units! Drop your guesses in the comments below before checking the solution.

No cheating! 🧠👇

SPOILER WARNING: The correct answer is hidden below:

When a gadget is just a pile of wrenches: Vector layout inspired by a terribly broken smartphone experience

Here is a highly symbolic vector piece I designed today using Inkscape’s grid system.

It represents the mental image that pops into my head whenever I think about the single worst, most unreliable smartphone I’ve ever owned (keeping the brand nameless to avoid tech wars).

Instead of clean microchips and high-tech circuits, it felt like this device was just a chaotic, messy conglomerate of wrenches, bolts, and internal friction. It felt like it required a permanent mechanical tune-up just to stay alive.

Drafting all these wrench heads at angled trajectories while keeping the connecting nodes perfectly seamless across the grid was a really challenging exercise in path operations.

Have you guys ever translated a frustrating tech experience or a bad memory into a clean geometric vector layout?

Designed a custom vector template in Inkscape for a cigar holder. It’s a gift for my great-grandfather’s 102nd birthday!

Here is a very special and personal vector project I’ve been drafting in Inkscape using strict grid snapping.

It’s a flat-pack template for a custom cigar holder, designed as a gift for my great-grandfather, who is celebrating his 102nd birthday!

The layout features symmetric, comb-like interior slots to keep the cigars perfectly spaced and aligned, while the outer silhouette combines sharp, tech-style notches with smooth, organic curves at the top and bottom. It was quite a puzzle to keep the functional slots uniform while letting the outer shape flow freely across the grid.

I’m planning to translate this vector file into a real-life physical object.

Would love to get your thoughts on the geometry! What material do you think would do justice to a 102-year milestone? Premium wood, acrylic, or something else?

Darkest Dungeon vectors! Broke way too many keyboards playing this game as a kid, so I recreated the characters in Inkscape.

This game defined a huge part of my childhood, and honestly, I lost count of how many keyboards I smashed because of its brutal RNG and permadeath mechanics.

To pay tribute to those raging gaming sessions, I decided to recreate the distinctive, heavy-shadowed silhouettes of the Darkest Dungeon heroes using Inkscape. Converting their blocky, gritty, and angular art style into clean vector lines using grid snapping was a great way to practice node placement.

They are fully ready for laser cutting or making custom stencils now.

What do you think of the silhouettes? Can you guess all three heroes just by their vector outlines?

My sister wanted to bake sci-fi style buns, so I drafted this custom layout for her in Inkscape. Spoiler: dough proved too hard to tame!

Here is a slightly unconventional project I worked on recently. My sister had a creative spark and wanted to bake some uniquely shaped, sci-fi/industrial-style buns. She explained her idea, and I used Inkscape’s grid system to turn it into a precise vector template.

The design features symmetric bracket-like segments expanding from a central square core, all enclosed in a custom angular outline.

Unfortunately, baking physics won this round—the dough expanded way too much in the oven, and the intricate geometric patterns didn't survive the heat. However, it was a really fun exercise in translating a wild culinary idea into a clean vector layout!

Has anyone else here ever used Inkscape to design templates for food, stencils, or baking molds?

Designed a vector template inspired by the iconic girder beams from Team17's Worms game! Already cut the physical pieces

Here is my latest layout, and it has a pretty nostalgic backstory! I was watching a review of the classic "Worms" game by Team17 and got completely inspired by the industrial girder beams scattered across the maps.

I decided to recreate that exact retro-industrial vibe in Inkscape. I used strict grid snapping to draw the bent metal plate profile and perfectly space out the circular cutouts for the bolts/rivets.

The best part? I’ve actually used this vector file to laser cut the parts for a real-life physical project! It’s amazing to see how a simple shape from a 2D game translates into actual hardware elements.

What do you think of the geometry? Has anyone else here ever crafted physical props or parts inspired by old-school games using Inkscape?

Designed a vector template for an interactive system error indicator. It will be backlit with red LEDs!

Here is a vector template for an interactive hardware indicator I’ve been drafting in Inkscape.

The concept is a physical system status panel. In case of a system failure, this specific "ERR 404!" segment triggers and lights up in bright red from the inside. I wanted to give it a sharp, industrial, and slightly dystopian tech vibe, so I customized the lettering to fit perfectly inside these angled trapezoidal enclosures.

Everything was aligned using strict grid snapping to ensure clean lines for potential laser cutting or engraving.

What do you think of this aesthetic? Any tips on how to improve the font style or spacing to make the illumination pop even more in real life?

Turning my vector layouts into hardware accessories: Mask and sci-fi keychain concepts

Here is a new set of vector layouts I’ve been working on: templates for custom sci-fi/cyberpunk keychains and a stylized mask icon.

The two designs on the left are drafted specifically with physical production in mind (like laser cutting or CNC routing out of acrylic or wood), combining solid outer silhouettes with intricate inner cuts. The one on the right is a vector illustration of a mask, adding a bit of character to the set.

What do you think of the proportions? If you were to laser cut these, what material or thickness do you think would work best for a clean look?

Two iterations of a futuristic interface frame template. Designed with strict grid snapping

Here are two variations of a futuristic UI/hardware frame layout I’ve been drafting today in Inkscape.

I wanted to see how changing just the inner corners alters the entire aesthetic. The left one uses standard sharp corners for a more solid, industrial feel, while the right one features chamfered edges for a more high-tech look. Keeping the outer arcs symmetrical on the grid required quite a bit of precise node editing.

Which version do you prefer, and how would you approach blending the straight cuts into those smooth outer curves?

Combining gears and process nodes in Inkscape. Really testing my grid alignment skills here

Here is my latest vector layout practice in Inkscape: a technical icon template representing automation, settings, or data integration.

Combining the circular process nodes on the left with the gear mechanism on the right while maintaining clean geometry across the grid was a fun challenge. I had to manually adjust some nodes to make the layout feel perfectly balanced and sharp.

Would love to get some feedback! What are your favorite tricks for designing accurate gear teeth or symmetrical mechanical elements without using external plugins?

Inkscape grid practice: A vector layout for a custom battery status display

Continuing my daily vector layout practice, here is a minimalist battery charging status panel I designed in Inkscape.

I focused on getting consistent rounded corners for the slots and aligning the lighting bolt icon perfectly at the bottom using precision snapping. It could be useful as a template for a custom physical charging station, a power bank casing, or a UI element.

Would love to hear your thoughts! What's your favorite workflow in Inkscape for making sure rounded rectangles have perfectly identical corner radii when scaling?

Sci-fi / Futuristic frame vector template I designed today. Thoughts on the symmetry?

Following up on my previous layout, here is a futuristic/sci-fi frame design I created today using Inkscape.

I leaned heavily into angular symmetry to give it a tech/cyberpunk aesthetic. It could work as a frame for a custom digital display, a bezel for a DIY device, or an in-game HUD element. Getting all the inner nodes to align perfectly across the grid was a great exercise in precision snapping.

What do you think of this shape? Any ideas on how to improve the corner transitions or expand this concept?

Experimenting with geometric layouts in Inkscape: Control panel concept

Here is a vector layout I’ve been working on recently using Inkscape’s grid system.

It's a template for a custom control panel interface, featuring a central circular dial area and segmented side slots for buttons, switches, or LED indicators. Tried to keep the geometry clean, balanced, and perfectly aligned.

Would love to get some feedback from the community! How do you usually handle precision snapping for complex symmetric layouts like this?
