Nobel laureate AND great taste in music. Congrats Prof!

Stanford professor Karl Deisseroth was notified yesterday morning that he’d won the Nobel prize in physiology or medicine. A lot of news outlets reported that he had to finish making his kids’ lunches after he found out, but I’m delighted to see him in this Graceland concert tee.

John Williams question

We have tkts for John Williams concert tomorrow and I casually mentioned light sabers to my almost 14 year old son never expecting that he would want one. Surprise surprise. If he wants to be one of the first 500 through the gate for a free mini light saber, when should he arrive to the bowl? I’m never at the gate when it first opens so I have no idea when lines form. Thank you!

Medical emergency on 68th dr on 6/25

This is a long shot. I happened upon a medical emergency on 68th dr between 110th and 112th at the end of June. I did chest compressions on a man in his late 40s, I guess. Paramedics took him away, family friends collected his two teen kids. This occurred in the afternoon. If you know the family, could I please ask you a question?

Tired and feeling so guilty

I rushed to the hospital Friday night because it seemed like my dad would die—heart failure. He did not. Saturday he entered hospice (still at hospital, but hospice team arranging to get him home to die.) Since Friday night, I mostly stayed bedside, overnights in a chair, until this afternoon. I am spent. I’ve come from out of state. Been here two weeks and I miss my family. I’m scared and sad and stressed out. My mom, his wife, stayed home today. She is 83 years old and she has a cold. It’s been a month long hospital stay and my mom is exhausted. Dad’s sister and BIL left last night to go back to her home, out of state, and his brother and SIL left after me today. After two days of family and talking and sharing memories, now Dad’s alone, and I feel so guilty. I am overtired and just breaking but I don’t want him to be scared. Logically I know the nurses will take care of him, he’s in a ward with 1:1 nursing, but my heart is tortured. Thanks for reading.

Big dining table-free

I’ve tried to join the FH Buy Nothing group but haven’t been approved. My mother’s monster-sized dining table needs to go, and she won’t just put it out for trash pick up. It has some damage on the legs, the tabletop is pristine. It has three leaves. Pics without leaves. It’s about 3’ wide and 8’ long. Seats ten when with the leaves in—maybe more. No chairs, though. Message me for details if interested.

Helping my mom w carpet removal

This is a corner of my mom’s living room. The carpet is 30+ years old. Bringing my dad back here, likely in a hospital bed, and need to either replace the carpet or pull it up and leave the hardwood. The latter would be easiest. The rest of the apartment is hardwood and looks like this small corner. I care about cleanliness and ease of removal. It needn’t be beautiful right now. Forgive me if these questions sound dumb, I’m juggling a lot with a sick dad and an octogenarian mom who’s completely neglected her home.

My mom has a super in the building. Is carpet removal and removal of the wood with staples on the perimeter a job for a specially skilled worker, or can I get someone from Task Rabbit?

What should I consider before getting someone to tear this up? What unexpected surprises might I find? What are some tips to pulling up this carpet and cleaning it all up?

For context, this is a building from 1939 in Queens NY.

Looking for general advice on how to proceed.

Progress report and house cleaning advice

Advice, venting, just sharing.

My dad is in the hospital and likely coming home for palliative care and eventual hospice. Went into my mom’s house and it wasn’t as bad as I expected but filthy.

I’m focusing on just four rooms of the 2 bedroom apartment.

Living room, minimal junk but dirty, where dad’s hospital bed will go. Disgusting carpet (stains and dirt.)

Kitchen, moderate junk. So dirty. I need that hygienic for both.

Dining room, which is like a foyer, with big dining table (mail, papers, etc.) and bookcases with my grandfathers books (he died in the 50s).

Bathroom. Needs thorough cleaning.

Progress! Mom got rid of like 75% of books. Once she got going, it got easier. So lots of dust is just gone! I think she’s beginning to envision that she can have a better living space and she can do this. (She’s 83!)

Help! I want to get cleaners in and I’m afraid. I’m afraid of their reaction. I’m afraid they’ll not take the job. It’s dusty. The floors need a good scrubbing. There’s no old food or feces or urine. No pets. I’ll describe the environment honestly. Already made a call to the cleaners. Please share any advice on how to make this hiring and managing of cleaners task less stressful and more productive. (Less stressful is carpet cleaner once apartment is cleaned.)

Last, what a terrible spot my mom put us in. I’m managing a dying and depressed father and this nightmare of a task so he can have a safe and nice home to return to. The only bright spot is maybe maybe this is a turning point for mom.

Thanks for reading this very long post.

Fed ex office store (or something similar) in FH?

Hello Forest Hillians. I’m in LA and my mom is in Forest Hills. She’s managing some administrative work around a family member’s hospitalization. She needs to turn some hard copies into PDFs to email. She lives by Yellowstone Park. Can drive but prefers to walk. I know there’s a Fed Ex office store in driving distance, wondering if there’s any type of office or printing shop on Queens Blvd or Continental. Potentially a friend can help her but I’d like a plan b. Thanks for any leads!
