Hey everyone. I’m a 1st year union boilermaker apprentice and I’m traveling for my first shutdown next week. It’s my first time working a big outage and also my first time traveling for work, so I’m pretty excited but definitely nervous. Its only going to be about a week and a half of work which I think is good for me to get acclimated, however I want to be prepared.
From what I’ve been told, we will mainly be running stick.
I had a few questions for people who’ve done a lot of shutdowns:
What does a typical day look like?
As a first-year apprentice, what kind of work should I realistically expect? Will I actually be welding?
Any tips for running 7018 all day if that’s what we’ll be using?
If I mess up a weld or struggle with something, is that a huge deal? How much patience do foremen usually have with first-years?
What can I do to make a good impression and avoid getting laid off early?
Any tools or gear you wish you had brought on your first shutdown?
Any advice for surviving 7x12s without burning yourself out?
I’m trying to learn as much as I can and pull my own weight. Any advice is appreciated.
I’ll be traveling about 17 hours from my home state for a job. I’m really excited, but also pretty nervous because it’s my first union boilermaker job away from home as woman.
I’ve been told there isn’t a make-or-break weld test, and I’ll pretty much be able to start welding right away after orientation.
For those of you who’ve done shutdowns or traveled for work:
I’ll be flying in, renting a car, and staying in a hotel, so any travel advice is appreciated too. I’m eager to learn and want to make sure I show up prepared.
completed a commission and im so happy with it!! what else should i make??
I have a commission i am doing for someone, its a welded/fabricated rose i will be creating. they want the rose to be coated in blue cerakote. i was thinking about going to a gun/knife store to get a quote. however I want to see if this is the smartest option..
i will be using 22 gauge steel and mig welding it into a flower. would it be possible to cerakote it after i finish welding? i can insert a picture of the a similar flower as an example of what it will look like.
i want to make sure im doing the right thing and prepping correctly as well, so any tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated.
thank you!!
