FAITH HEDGEPETH MURDER CASE PRETRIAL HEARINGS WRAP; DEFENSE FOCUSED ON MISSING BLOOD SAMPLE

FAITH HEDGEPETH MURDER CASE PRETRIAL HEARINGS WRAP; DEFENSE FOCUSED ON MISSING BLOOD SAMPLE

Case Summary:

“Faith Hedgepeth was a 19-year-old University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student whose 2012 killing became a high-profile cold case. Here’s the case in a nutshell, including where things stand as of August 2026.
Faith was found dead on the morning of September 7, 2012, in the off-campus Chapel Hill apartment she shared with roommate Karena Rosario. She had suffered a severe beating to the head, and investigators determined that she had also been sexually assaulted. The scene contained several unusual pieces of evidence, including male DNA and a fast-food bag on which someone had written a message containing the words “I’M NOT STUPID … JEALOUS.”

“The case drew enormous attention because investigators had substantial forensic evidence but couldn’t initially identify the man whose DNA was recovered. Over the years, suspicion and online speculation fell on various people in Faith’s life, particularly Rosario. Importantly, Rosario has not been charged in Faith’s killing, and speculation about her involvement shouldn’t be confused with established evidence.

The major breakthrough came in September 2021, when investigators arrested Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares. Authorities said advances in DNA/genealogical investigative techniques led them to him and that his DNA matched evidence from the crime scene. Subsequent reporting has also described investigators linking a palm print to him.”

Update:

Six witnesses testified during an evidentiary hearing, including forensic evidence specialists, a state crime lab scientist and the lead Chapel Hill police investigator on the case.

Defense attorneys focused on a bloodstain collected from a bathroom door frame inside Hedgepeth's Chapel Hill apartment. A former Chapel Hill police forensic evidence specialist testified that her team collected the sample but said she does not know what happened to it before it could be tested.

She acknowledged she never updated her report to document that the sample had been lost.

"Forensic evidence is going to be used to prosecute my client. A piece of evidence that was collected and should have been tested. The connection makes the loss of this more difficult for our case," a defense attorney told the judge.

Prosecutors argued there is no evidence the sample was lost intentionally.

"The long and short of it is, Judge, there was blood on the door frame. We don't know whose blood it was. It wasn't tested," a prosecutor said. "It was a mistake, a negligence issue. That's what we have here. No evidence of it being lost in bad faith."

The defense also played video from a 2012 police interview with former UNC soccer player Jordan McCrary.

McCrary told investigators he picked up Hedgepeth's roommate, Karena Rosario, around 4 a.m. and noticed blood on her finger. He said he asked Rosario about it after she and Hedgepeth returned from Thrill Nightclub. According to McCrary, Rosario said she did not know where the blood came from.

The judge denied the defense's motion to dismiss the case.

Apalachee High School shooter’s father sentenced to 15 years

“A father who gifted his 14-year-old son an assault rifle that the teenager then used to unleash a mass shooting at a Georgia high school was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison.

A jury in March convicted Colin Gray on multiple charges, including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter, over the Christmas gift his son used in the Sept. 4, 2024, shooting at Apalachee High School.

In rendering his sentence, Judge Nicholas Primm said he had to measure Gray’s failure to act against the crimes committed by his son.

“The weight of your crimes is tethered and tied to the acts of someone else, your son,” Primm said. “Two scenarios: You fail the same way in both. You fail to get Colt counseling. You fail to remove the guns from the house.”

My main thought on this is

Parents should have a duty to get their child mental health care like they have duty to get their child physical heath care but at the time mental health care in the US is abominable. The gun just adds another dimension to the recklessness.

Note sent in February said Nancy Guthrie, mother of ‘Today’ show anchor, had died shortly after kidnapping

“The second note said, basically, it wasn’t intended to work this way but in the course of the kidnapping some things happened and Nancy Guthrie is dead,” CNN Chief Law Enforcement and Intelligence Analyst John Miller said on “AC360” Monday night.

“The thing that makes the note significant is it came from the same electronic source as the first note, which demanded the ransom,” he said, adding the second note had “a very different tone (from) that note the week before.”

So the second note has been verified by the FBI that it contains the same wording. It references some things from the first note and while the IP address is different, it was sent the same way.”

It appears to be the perpetrator’s distancing themselves from the crime and stating that she passed away from a heart condition shortly after they kidnapped her and an apology.

The Guthrie‘s are still willing to pay for her body but based on the note contents the FBI feels that the perpetrator that is handing communication is done communicating. They think that there are two perpetrator one overseas and one local to the US.

Nancy Guthrie Update: Leaked Sheriff Nanos Texts Reveal New Details

“So, she says that she was getting ready for the evening newscast, and this is when there were questions about the DNA evidence, such as, how are you testing it? What are you testing?

“My team sent a text to Sheriff Chris Nanos just trying to clarify what was going on with the DNA evidence so that we could be right before the newscast,” she said. “So, this was around like 9:50 that the text was sent to him. And this is like a week out… one or two weeks since she was missing. Still, we’re talking like top lead story headlines across every news network every night at this point.”
Sheriff Chris Nanos’ Text Message Revealed: Report
Then, she revealed his response to her team’s text message. “So, my team texted him trying to get clarification,” she said, according to her report. “We immediately received a text back from him that said: ‘Did you happen to notice the time? Give it a rest.'”

The kindest comment I can make is this case seems out of his depth.

Inside the child sex abuse case that resulted in Ken Paxton’s office offering a plea deal of just one day in jail

This case is another case with lousy reporting. Every article is either politicized or lacking details. However, it the horrific details are worth reading.

Trigger: Sexual Assault

“Adam Dean Hoffman was accused of repeatedly sexually abusing a young boy for years.

The defendant, a local attorney named Adam Dean Hoffman, stood accused of repeatedly sexually abusing a young boy for years. The boy had told an investigator that Hoffman raped him and showed him pornography, court records show. And he talked about his suffering on the witness stand in detail during the trial.

“Think about this kiddo and what this kid went through at age 8, and 9, and 10,” Cotlar said during the closing arguments, later adding, “He's not lying, and you know that because he's so specific.”

But there were complicating factors for the jury to consider. The victim’s revelation about his abuse came after he was caught “acting out sexually” with his cousin, Cotlar said. He’d also recanted parts of his testimony during the trial, including a claim that he saw guns in Hoffman’s home.”

Me: Hoffman raped his son’s best friend for three years. The prosecutor’s office botched the case which lead to a hung jury

It was horrible,” his mother recalled in an interview. Her son had been forced to talk about “the most horrible things that have ever happened in his life, in a room full of strangers and the person that did it, and he didn’t want to do it again.”

And prosecutors were agreeing to a jail sentence of “time served,” which included the one day in jail Hoffman had spent following his initial arrest before he bonded out.

Me: The judge declined this offer.

When everyone returned, Cantu pitched a new agreement: Hoffman would spend 30 days in jail and surrender his Texas law license. She also noted there was a “lifetime protective order” barring him from any contact with the victim.

Me: 30 days in jail and no law license for rape.

This book I have been reading about Victorian Danville, Virginia

I had never heard of Danville before that city councilman was attacked there but apparently it has a lot of Victorian architecture and a Millionaires’ Row.

Millionaires' Row in Danville, VA, located along Main Street, is a premier historic district featuring Virginia's most concentrated collection of Gilded Age Victorian and Edwardian mansions. Built by 19th-century tobacco and textile tycoons, these elaborate homes reflect the city’s immense wealth and industrial prosperity.

What we know about the Mississippi teen's drowning death and investigation

“The family of a Mississippi 18-year-old who was found dead after a July 4 boat trip with friends to an island off the Gulf Coast called for a thorough and transparent investigation a news conference on Friday with the Rev. Al Sharpton, saying many of the details they're discovering don't add up.

Civil rights lawyer Ben Crump, who was retained by the family of Nolan Xavier Wells earlier this week, has said the family has concerns about the investigation and planned to conduct an independent autopsy. Wells travelled by boat to Horn Island, Mississippi, on July 4 with a group of friends, but did not make the return trip with them that afternoon. His body was found early Monday morning, more than a day later.

While Jackson County Sheriff’s Office officials said investigators don't suspect foul play in the Black college student's death, the sheriff has asked for any witnesses or people with video from the popular beach island about 10 miles (16 kilometers) off the coast of Mississippi to come forward to help shed light on the moments before Wells' disappearance and death.

At the news conference Friday attorneys said the friends who left Wells on the island, took his phone and keys when they departed. Crump said Wells' family used an app to track his phone, and a friend went to where it was on land to pick it up.

“What teenager would leave their phone behind if they’re going to stay on this island? What teenager wouldn’t take their phone? It’s not adding up at all," Crump said.

He added that the family believes text messages from social media apps had been deleted from his phone when they got it back, and they plan to employ experts to try to receive all the data they can.”

Nolan Wells' family sent his body from Mississippi to Washington, D.C., for an independent autopsy, believing their son didn't die by "accident," according to their attorney.

This is another case where a group of friends go on an outing, and one doesn’t return.

The bunny that has lived on the side of my gym for 4 years, Loudoun

I watched him build a mulch nest for thirty minutes talking to my mom. He would run over to grab a mouthful of mulch and then take it to the hole he dug in the side of the grass. I told my mom he’s single and she didn’t believe me but I have legit seen him for four years daily and he’s never with another bunny. He’s fairly gregarious he never runs when he sees people or cars, just kept building his nest.

Mystery over 19-year-old’s last moments after his naked body was found on the road following four-day party

“A newly-graduated teenager who vanished from a four-day party had a fractured skull, broken ribs and his teeth were scattered around him when he was found naked and dead on the side of a rural highway in Oklahoma.

Mystery surrounds the final moments of Noah Presgrove, 19, who told friends he was leaving the party to go for a walk. His body was found about a mile away on the side of US 81 in Jefferson County, Oklahoma on Labor Day, 2023.”

I don’t know why no one is talking about this case but they should be.

Mysterious Death JoAnn Matouk Romain: Generation Why

Every time, this case gets covered:

They mention her husband left her for her best friend, she was at war with her family over an inheritance, she thought she was being followed all the time and thought her mail was being tampered but there’s no way she committed suicide.

I’m not implying she did but her life was in turmoil.
