IDW's Superlatives | E04 - Best Comic Book Crossover Issue

You know what makes your favorite thing better? ANOTHER favorite thing entering the ring.

Whether its a team-up or a fight to the death, crossovers have been a classic comic trope since the dawn of time.

The question is: which one reigns supreme?
Superman vs. Spiderman and Terminator x Robocop take the stage.

Welcome to Superlatives—the show where comics go head-to-head.

Every episode, we pick a Superlative Theme. Our editors debate over two issues that should win the title. When the arguments are done, our moderator delivers the final verdict—deciding which comic walks away with this episode’s superlative.

This episode? What's the Best Comic Book Crossover Issue? Jake Williams and Nic Nino debate between Superman vs. Spiderman or Terminator x Robocop. Who will Dave Wielgosz declare victorious?

Hi Reddit! I'm Nick Marino, writer of Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla from IDW — AMA!

Hey everyone!

I'm Nick Marino, writer of Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla, the latest crossover comic series from IDW Publishing, and I'm excited to answer your questions today!

In this crossover of massive proportions, Sonic's ongoing battle with Dr. Eggman gets interrupted by the arrival of two colossal visitors from another reality: Mothra and Mechagodzilla. Their clash tears through Sonic's world, leaving Sonic, Tails, Amy, and friends scrambling to save the day while Eggman sees an opportunity too good to pass up.

If you've ever wondered:

  • How a Sonic/Godzilla crossover came together
  • What it's like writing Sonic, Eggman, Mothra, and Mechagodzilla in the same story
  • Behind-the-scenes details from the creative process
  • Working with artist Jack Lawrence
  • Favorite Godzilla or Sonic characters
  • Comic writing, storytelling, or publishing in general...ask away!

A little about the book:

  • Written by Nick Marino
  • Illustrated by Jack Lawrence
  • Colored by Reggie Graham
  • Lettered by Ed Dukeshire
  • Published by IDW Publishing

Series overview:

>The Blue Blur's battle with Dr. Eggman is upended when a dimensional fissure brings giant monsters into Sonic's world. As Mothra and Mechagodzilla wage war across the landscape, Sonic and his friends must stop the destruction before it's too late. Meanwhile, Dr. Eggman becomes increasingly obsessed with unlocking the secrets of these colossal creatures—and turning them into his own "eggtastic" creations.

I'll be here answering questions for the next few hours. Looking forward to chatting with Sonic fans, Godzilla fans, comic readers, and anyone curious about the project!

Ask me anything!

How Ben Wickey and Patrick Horvath Use History and Horror in Comics | CreatorXCreator Podcast E01

How Ben Wickey and Patrick Horvath Use History and Horror in Comics | CreatorXCreator Podcast E01

Throwback Thursday to our first episode of the CreatorXCreator Podcast from IDW Studios -- backed by an award-winning comic book publisher known for creator-owned storytelling, bold graphic novels, and acclaimed licensed titles across horror, science fiction, fantasy, and literary comics.

In this debut episode, cartoonists Ben Wickey and Patrick Horvath discuss witch trials and anthropomorphic animals through the lens of history, research, and visual narrative.

The conversation centres on Wickey’s deeply researched graphic novel More Weight: A Salem Story, inspired in part by his real-life ancestry tracing back to defendants in the Salem witch trials, and Horvath’s unsettling crime comic Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, which uses talking animals to explore violence, morality, and American fear.

Together, they explore moral panic, historical repetition, and the ethics of depicting violence in comics without glorifying it. Topics include Salem’s cultural legacy, American obsession with punishment, the emotional power of “cute” imagery paired with horror, and the responsibility creators carry when telling violent stories. Wickey also reflects on his creative process, historical research, and his friendship with legendary comics writer Alan Moore, while Horvath discusses world-building, reader discomfort, and resisting aestheticised brutality.

About the Authors:

Ben Wickey is a cartoonist and writer whose work blends meticulous historical research with personal storytelling. His graphic novel More Weight: A Salem Story examines the Salem witch trials through both documented history and lived ancestry, drawing connections between past moral panics and modern American culture. He has a longstanding creative relationship with Alan Moore and is known for his thoughtful, research-driven approach to comics.

Patrick Horvath is a cartoonist and filmmaker whose work often pairs deceptively gentle visuals with disturbing subject matter. His crime comic Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees uses anthropomorphic animals to explore violence, denial, and moral ambiguity. Horvath’s work is recognised for challenging reader expectations and interrogating how stories frame harm and responsibility.
