Been experimenting with AI-generated depth maps and bas-relief workflows for CNC carving, and finally put together a browser-based tool for it:

CNCPoint Tools

It can:

  • generate depth maps
  • create CNC-style bas reliefs
  • preview reliefs in 3D
  • export STL-ready geometry
  • refine surfaces for carving workflows

Currently trying to improve:

  • edge preservation
  • denoising
  • machinable detail
  • smoother gradients for wood carving/CNC relief work

Would genuinely love feedback from people working with:

  • CNC routers
  • ArtCAM/Carveco
  • ZBrush
  • wood carving
  • relief sculpting
  • depth-map workflows

Still early, but building this specifically for the CNC maker community.

Anyone interested in a CNC relief/design sharing community?

I’ve been working on a small project for CNC hobbyists and relief carving artists where people can:

Share CNC designs

Upload relief/mural work

Explore AI-generated bas relief workflows

Discuss ArtCAM, Aspire, ZBrush, depth maps, etc.

I also built a tool that converts images into CNC-style relief/depth designs for experimentation and learning.

Still improving everything, but I’d genuinely like feedback from other CNC users and makers.

What features would you want in a CNC design community/platform?

Experimenting with AI-generated bas relief for CNC carving workflows

I’ve been testing different workflows for converting normal images into CNC-friendly bas relief designs.

Current pipeline is something like:

  • image preprocessing
  • depth estimation
  • relief enhancement
  • grayscale cleanup
  • converting into CNC-ready carving references

The biggest challenge so far is preserving small details without creating noisy toolpaths.

I’m curious how others here approach relief carving workflows:

  • Do you sculpt manually?
  • Use ArtCAM?
  • Use grayscale depth maps?
  • Blend normals + height maps?
  • Any preferred cleanup methods before machining?

I’ve also been experimenting with an internal web tool for testing relief generation and mural-style outputs, and it’s been interesting comparing AI-generated depth maps vs manually cleaned ones.

Would love to hear how experienced CNC users handle detailed relief work.
