Where [probably at least a couple] L420 have gone before

Yes it runs hot under load.

L420 with L412 heatsink, plan to get a L412 heatsink intended for the variant with the dGPU. Same size CPU contact point, thicker heat pipe. Can just dremmel the dGPU contact point off if it will be in the way.

"Mount: /tmp/.mount_PrismLdcKGGH: can't find in /etc/fstab."

I've been getting this new error after installing PrismLauncher on my second computer. On my 1st, it starts just fine, nothing to note, required no special configuration. Now upon downloading, making the AppImage executable, and executing, it yields this error. What's wrong? I've even tried a clean install of the operating system.

Thinkpad E420 with Devuan not starting up correctly with I7-2640M

Despite BIOS being able to correctly identify the new CPU and the computer being able to post, when I boot Devuan, all I get is a flashing underscore (shown below). Any ideas as to why?

Black screen when using eGPU-switcher or X11 config files on a Thinkpad T520 running Debian Linux (EXP GDC Beast)

After attempting both the egpu-switcher method, and the method detailed on the "ExternalGPU" page on the Debian wiki, I can only get a black screen on the laptop display, while output directly from the graphics card is fine and displays on my TV. Does anyone know how to make this work on my laptop screen?

ExpressCard (exp gcd beast, rx550) eGPU not detected, any idea why? (read body)

On a T520 running Deb w/ sysv. Using a EXP GCD Beast adapter with a 4gb rx550 but the computer does not detect it with " lspci |grep -iE 'display|vga' " even with the power setting set to generation 1.

Overclocking the I7-4700

I'm looking to overclock this processor and I'm aware it's been done before despite being a locked processor.

I've come into a free ROG G750J. Thing was fairly thrashed but the board is intact (mostly, dust, cat hair, fucked up keyboard I can't be bothered to spend time and money fixing just for an outdated gaming laptop not much better than my thinkpads).

I ripped out the parts that were of use for my other computers and intend to eventually build some kinda frankencomputer out of it eventually. Maybe some kinda fucked up all in one.

I know overclocking the processor is a fools errand when newer, better (or non-soldered cpu) computers are available, but I wanna do it simply because I have a free motherboard and screen and it still has 4gb of ram and 2 hard drive slots, and just the love of a project.

I am aware there are methods involving microcode glitches or modded bioses, but found detailed info elusive beyond getting .2GHz from intels software. I saw a link to a forum post about it, but sadly it seems the forum no longer exists. Anyone know how to do it?

PulseAudio volume commands muting audio on sysv.

Hi

I installed devuan yesterday with sysvinit and am using pulseaudio. For whatever reason, using the volume adjustment keybinds I used on debian (copied file containing them to sd, pasted it back in place after intstall) produce an error where the first click in either direction will toggle the mute, and the volume will seemingly be set to zero after every reboot

Curious about Devuan and seeing the non-systemd side of things. What do y'all like about the non-sysd inits?

What stuff about it have y'all liked and what should I expect? I've been using debian for a couple of weeks and liking it quite a bit but have been recommended to try non-systemd stuff. Will probably install on my L420 within a day or two.

PCLinuxOS 2007 .iso now available stand-alone on Archive.org (READ BODY)

EDIT: also added Community Fedora Remix 12.3 iso to this post to avoid spamming

This is an rip+upload of a CD-R containing PCLinuxOS 2007. I've seen it online only in large bundles from archives of German computer magazines (!com and Linux User). I was unfortunately unable to use the CD on my computer to test it, but I believe it may work better on older hardware, since my computers post-date it by a few years and what little I can see online about it suggests it may be finnicky on computers using SATA hard drives? Either way, I am uploading this both for preservation, and to see if other people have more luck with this particular .iso than I have had.

https://archive.org/details/pclinux-os-2007

I also have uploaded Community Fedora Remix 12.3, a previously completely lost Fedora Remix from 2010. It comes with multiple desktop environments and preloaded games. This .iso worked without issue from DVD-Rs for me, but did not work on a Ventoy USB stick (contrary to the description on Archive, I was mistaken and failed to test that it actually worked with Ventoy. Sad it didn't)

Community Fedora Remix 12.3 hopefully soon to be archived :)

In a batch of software CDs I found at the thrift store long my interest in Linux, I found a previously unarchived version of Fedora. I will be posting it on archive.org as soon as I rip it. I also have a potentially-working copy of PCLinuxOS 2007, but on the computer I tested it on, it kicks me out to a basic shell due to some kind of error. If I can get it to work, I can upload it stand-alone since it only seems to preserved in archives or Linux User magazine and !com magazine cover DVDs (the former or which has a LOT of potentially otherwise-unarchived distro versions)

The L420 is pretty sweet, actually

Yuh (probably gonna reinstall deb with no de and just use openbox tbh, i got too used to it, but I don't mind gnome flashback)

Thinkpad L420, sadly not librebootable, but just one panel and you have access to two DDR3 slots, a sandybridge processor, your hard drive, and your heat sink and fan.

Ly on Debian 13 failure to start

[SOLVED: sudo ln-s /usr/sbin/agetty /usr/bin/agetty fixed it] After going through the install process of ly, disabling getty on tty2 and enabling ly on tty2, it fails to start and hits its reset limit

`sudo journalctl -u ly@tty2` reveals that it fails because it cannot execute /usr/bin/agetty due to no such file or directory

Attempting `sudo ln -s /usr/bin/getty /usr/bin/agetty` and `sudo systemctl restart ly@tty2.service` yields the same results

Has anyone gotten ly working on Debian 13? With the amount of time I've sank into ly I think I'm almost content to just use tty1 as my login manager atp. Don't get much more minimal than that

Dead-new to watercooling a slightly unconventional idea am hoping to execute

To start, I am looking to watercool a laptop (thinkpad t520 to be specific), partially for the fun/novelty of the project, partially to accomodate a faster processor (librebooting, then going from a i7-2640M to a i7-3940XM. Could hypothetically be cooled with a modifed fan from a W520, but eh, why not watercool the silly thing).

I have an idea of the hardware I'd need and how to lay out the piping and heatblocks, but simply wanna know where to get started when it comes to software for controlling the pumps and fans. I should note I am running linux. Frankly, if such a software wouldn't work for the hardware would be a sufficient/unjustifiable pain I'd not mind just having it run at full blast whenever the computer is on if it'd hurt nothing.

New to Linux, looking for more ways to lower ram usuage on Mint for funsies.

Title is mostly self explanatory, but before anyone says it, I do intend on looking for progressively lighter distros as I get better with Linux.

Anyways, I have managed to lower idle ram usage by about 200 mb by using openbox and tint2. Wanna just see how low I can get it just for lowness sake.

New to Openbox (and linux as a whole), running but with errors, can I get some tech support? (Background and further info in details)

If reading and willing to provide support, thank you.

Misc info:

Running newest version of Linux Mint,

Using LY and Openbox WM with no DE

Got gnome'd somewhere along the line, but only terminal seemed to be affected.

A few days ago, I installed OB. After failing to get it working thru the github (errors at the build and build make steps, installing it thru apt in terminal, having some trouble getting it to function (at first coule not switch to it in LY), it randomly started working after using startx in tty3 as was suggested in a forum. Since then, it has sort a worked, but at times produces many error messages and once produced error messages safter logging out, which filled the screen starting at the password field in LY (this, I have not been able to replicate).

On top of the pile of errors, tint2 doesn't seem to work beyond selecting preset themes. Attempting to edit themes causes a buffer overflow error after attempting to load .desktop
