GENUINE ADVICE

Hey everyone,

I genuinely need some honest career advice because I'm confused about what to do next, and I don't want to make another decision that I regret a few years later.

Here's my background:

  • I completed my 12th in 2023 with 82% in my top five subjects. If Computer Science is included, my percentage is around 76.6%.
  • After 12th, I was primarily focused on NDA and thought I would clear it. Unfortunately, I couldn't qualify, and my NDA attempts were over in 2024.
  • My parents suggested that I pursue BTech, but for reasons I don't fully understand now, I avoided that option.
  • Instead, I enrolled in a BSc program as a backup. The college was non-attending, so I didn't take my studies seriously. I wasted a lot of time, studied inconsistently, and sometimes relied on unfair means during exams.
  • I eventually completed my BSc with a 6.27 CGPA.
  • I'm now around two months into a regular MCA program, but I'm struggling to understand the subjects and feel that my computer science fundamentals are extremely weak.

The situation that scares me most is campus placements. Companies will start visiting in about 1.5 years, and I keep wondering how I'll clear their coding rounds, technical interviews, or aptitude tests when I don't even feel confident about my fundamentals.

I know that I made mistakes in the past, and I'm not trying to blame anyone else. I just want to make a better decision now.

The main dilemma: Should I continue MCA or restart with a four-year BTech CSE?

I'm considering joining BTech CSE at the same Tier 3 college where I could have studied earlier.

My reasoning is that BTech might give me a more structured foundation in programming, DSA, DBMS, operating systems, computer networks, and other CS subjects. I would also have access to undergraduate internships and placement opportunities, depending on the college's eligibility criteria.

On the other hand, restarting would mean spending another four years studying, paying additional fees, and postponing full-time employment.

I keep thinking that completing MCA in another 1.5–2 years without understanding anything would be pointless. But I also understand that a new degree won't automatically make me skilled if I repeat my old habits.

I have a few specific questions:

  1. If you were in my position, would you complete MCA and build your fundamentals independently, or restart with BTech CSE?
  2. Can someone with a BSc and a 6.27 CGPA realistically get into IT companies after MCA if they develop strong coding skills and projects? How restrictive are the academic eligibility criteria in practice?
  3. Would recruiters view BSc followed by BTech as an additional qualification, a change of degree, or an educational gap? Would my BSc marks and academic history still affect eligibility?
  4. Is restarting a four-year BTech at a Tier 3 college worth it if my primary goal is to become employable as a software developer?
  5. Would it be sensible to complete MCA while preparing for government exams as a backup, or would that divide my focus too much?
  6. If you have been in a similar situation, especially if you had poor academic performance, a delayed start, or weak fundamentals, what did you do to recover?

I'm currently 20 years old. I know I'm not too old to start again, but I also don't want to waste four more years just because I'm panicking about my past decisions.

Please give me realistic advice based on long-term career outcomes, actual hiring practices, and your own experiences. I'd especially appreciate responses from people who have completed BSc + MCA, switched degrees, or recruited freshers in IT.

I'm ready to put in the work now. I just need to decide where that work will be best invested.

Thank you.
