Just moved into a new flat in Leeds – confused about council tax, bills & any ways to save money?

Hi everyone,
I’ve just moved into a new flat at The Radiant, Kirkstall Road, Leeds, and this is my first time renting in the UK by myself.
I’m a bit confused about what I need to do regarding bills and was hoping for some advice.
From my tenancy agreement, it looks like I need to:
Register for Council Tax with Leeds City Council.
Set up electricity, water, broadband, and any other utilities in my name.
Pay any communal heating charges if they aren’t included.
A few questions:
What’s the easiest way to register for Council Tax?
How do I find out who my current electricity and water suppliers are?
Which broadband providers are the best value in Leeds?
Are there any cashback offers, referral codes, welcome bonuses, or student/new customer discounts I should know about when setting up utilities?
Are there any comparison websites or services you’d recommend that can save me money?
Any general tips for someone moving into their first rental in Leeds?
I’m trying to keep my monthly costs as low as possible, so any recommendations, referral links, or money-saving tips would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Signed tenancy in Leeds starting tomorrow – agency says I must pay rent even if I don’t move in. What are my options?‼️‼️

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice about a tenancy in England.
I signed an assured shorthold tenancy for a student house in Leeds. The tenancy starts tomorrow (1 July 2026). I have only paid a £200 deposit and haven’t moved in or collected the keys.
My circumstances have changed and I won’t be living in Leeds anymore. I also no longer have a guarantor willing to act for me.
I called the letting agency (Oasis Properties) today and asked if I could cancel the tenancy. They refused and said because I’ve signed the contract, I have to move in and pay at least two months’ rent, otherwise I won’t get my deposit back.
I have not paid any rent yet, only the deposit.
My questions are:
Can the landlord legally require me to pay rent if I never move into the property?
Are they required to try to find another tenant to reduce their losses?
Can they keep my £200 deposit?
Is there anything else I should do now to protect myself?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

free place to pick someone up from Manchester Airport T2 tonight?‼️‼️

Hi everyone,
I’m picking up a friend arriving from India at Manchester Airport Terminal 2 at around 7:30 pm today.
I’m trying to avoid paying the airport pick-up charge if possible. Is there anywhere nearby where I can wait for free and then collect them, or a free parking area within walking distance that people commonly use?
fun fact :last time i got ticket for £400 for picking up
Any up-to-date advice would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Need help with 3 APCOA parking charges from Manchester Airport in 20 minutes ‼️‼️
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice on whether I have grounds to appeal 3 APCOA parking charges from Manchester Airport.
I have received 3 separate Parking Charge Notices (PCNs) for the same vehicle on the same day (24/05/2026), all issued by APCOA and all dated 03/06/2026.
The timings are:
PCN 1: Terminal 2 Upper Drop Off Forecourt – 08:23 to 08:30
PCN 2: Terminal 2 West MSCP – 08:33 to 08:38
PCN 3: Terminal 2 West Ground Floor Pick Up Zone – 08:42 to 08:44
So all three charges relate to a single airport visit lasting around 20 minutes.
I was unfamiliar with Manchester Airport and genuinely did not realise there were separate payment requirements for each zone. I don’t remember seeing clear signs explaining that entering different areas would trigger separate charges.
The notices were sent to me as the registered keeper and I’m still within the 14-day discounted period, so I need to decide whether to appeal or pay.
My questions are:
Has anyone successfully appealed APCOA Manchester Airport charges?
Does the fact that there are 3 charges from one continuous visit help my case?
Are there any arguments around airport land/byelaws and keeper liability that are relevant here?
Should I appeal all 3 notices before considering payment?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I’m facing up to £300 in charges from what appears to have been a single airport visit.
Thanks.
