Day 13 - post op distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy at Sydney Royal North Shore Hospital,

Today was a good day. Had a CT to see how the drain is going and if there is any collections . Must be some since there is still some in the bag. I'm hoping it's coming out tomorrow. My day, Nurse Mia, took out the other half of my staples. The doctor had said I could go home tomorrow (2 weeks since surgery), but now he says it's looking like Thursday as a cardiologist needs to come visit me, and of course, I still have the drain. Can't wait to sleep in my bed and see my boy Fletch. ❤️ The scar is looking good .

I'm having a CT today to see if I still have collections or if the drain is blocked, etc......seeing a Cardiologist also about my heart and I had an ECG . Went downstairs and bought a chocolate cornetto. Walking better, just a little bent over . I'm hoping to go home tomorrow, which will be 2 weeks after the surgery. Can't wait to sleep in my own bed and see my boy Fletch. I miss him so much .

Day 12 -post op distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy at Royal North Shore Hospital

. Had a better day today , I still have 1 drain . My son and I had a chat with the Surgeon and he explained why they are going to do the 3rd surgery to remove remaining pancreas. Basically because there were 9 cancer spots in the part of the pancreas that they removed, but only 1 spot showed up on the scan, they are removing the head of the pancreas before something nasty shows up. He says they are worried about what they can't see, so out it comes .

It definitely makes sense to me , I want it gone. So open heart surgery in about 6 weeks, then I'm not sure how long after that ( depends on recovery time) for the 3rd surgery. Then, hopefully, that will be it . 🙏🏿 On the up, the scar is looking great .

Now a 3rd surgery......

Post surgery - had my distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy at Royal North Shore Hospital on the 5th of August . (Still here) Well, today was the day My Surgeon ProfessorJas Samra came to see me this morning. He said that they found 8 or 9 Adenocarcinoma spots in my pancreas and the only reason he didn't take the whole pancreas (they took some colon , stomache and lower lymph nodes also) at the time is because my heart won't handle it. So I have to have my open heart surgery for mitral valve prolapse and severe regurgitation in 8 weeks time and then following that surgery ( not sure how long after ) I have to now have a 3rd surgery to remove what remains of my pancreas as there is cancer in there also. I'm so overwhelmed. It's been a lot already, and now a 3rd operation. I spent the whole day in my hospital bed curled up behind the curtain, crying and sleeping. I'm 61 and have 3 beautiful grandkids under 6 . I want to see them grow up.

Day 10 ,post -op, distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy at Sydney oyal North Shore Hospital...

Day 10 - 14th August - post-op, distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy at Sydney Royal North Shore Hospital .....had 2 of the 3 drains removed this morning . Had a shower washed my hair and put a little colour on my face . Had old cannula removed. Ate brekkie and a little lunch . Went for a walk . Seem to be gauging the Creon quite well. Constipated now, though, with bloating and pain. May need some help in that department.

Doctor came in and put a new cannula in my hand . Took 3 attempts and killed . When the nurse came to do my intravenous antibiotics at 11pm, it was leaking . So she took it out, thank God. Doctor came at 3am and put in a new one ( much better position this time and a much better Doctor). Had to have a sleeping tablet tonight after only 8 hours sleep in 3 nights. I am currently looking out my window at 4.14 with a cup of tea.

Surgery day 9-distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy

Day 9 Sydney Royal North Shore Hospital after distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy.

Well, after being told last night not to eat and too fast, the Surgeon comes into my room at 7.30 am and says, "Are you eating?" And I said last night I was told to fast and he says oh no you have to eat you need nutrition and to start getting the creon and food etc.......all working for you. So yay, breakfast is back on . Then about 8 am I realised everyone but I had breakfast so I said to the nurse I didn't get breakfast and she said no, you're fasting . I'm like, WTF is going on . She says the Doctor said no breakfast because they want bloods and samples from all 3 drain bags . But you can have lunch. OMG....... Which I did get thank god, and I also took 2 creon and all was followed promptly by pain and wind . I'm still burping and have been for 2 days . The nurse says that's also part of the Creon settling in period. What an adventure. Was too full for dinner tonight.

Pancreatic enzymes

So day 7 at Sydney Royal North Shore Hospital-after my distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy, I still currently have 3 drains. I started creon 2 days ago but have pain and diahoreah 20 mins or so every time after I eat . The drains are not slowing, so this morning, they decided to test the contents to see if its Pancreatic Amalyse.....and this arvo, I finally got a proper dinner after a week of fluids only ......guess what ? Surgeon just came in and said, "Stop everything but water because yes, I am still producing Pancreatic Amalyse." So, I have literally been doubling up on enzymes. Well, that explains the pain and diahoreah.......so now I'm back to water only until I see the Doctor again tomorrow. 😪. I googled it, and it says it's a leak/fistula in the wound area, and it will need rest, I've fluids, diet, and time........Grrrrrr .......the Amalyse is the milky looking drain in the pic

Day 6 after surgery.....

Day 6 after surgery Day 6 after Distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy Sydney Royal North Shore Hospital-looking better every day. The surgeon told me the tumour was attached to my stomach and colon, so they have removed those bits and also my lower lymph nodes . Awaiting pathology results . 🙏🏿 Had my catheter, neck main line, and NG out yesterday, 10th August . Had to get a 3rd drain put in as the other 2 weren't reaching the last collection. Had a shower and washed my hair on my own. Went to the toilet.......finally . I'm still on free fluids, and I'm starving ....Hahaha, I started Creon .

Surgery - distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy -day 2 after surgery.

2.40 am Friday morning, 7th August, at Sydney Royal North Shore Hospital. Had my distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy on Wednesday 5th at 9.30 am. Took about 4 hours, the surgeon said, "The tumour was larger and thicker than they thought, and It was pressing on my stomach and colon." He says it's been sent away for testing. I'm on loads of painkillers like oxy and some oral pain tablets. The scar is huge and very sore. I'm in ICU . Have a heap of leads attached to monitor my blood pressure ( due to having a mitral valve prolapse and severe regurgitation). Open heart surgery in about 8 weeks after this . They got me up yesterday it was very painful. I started free fluids also and had a bed bath. Hope I'm not going to a Ward today .

Surgery tomorrow

Surgery tomorrow at Sydney Royal North Shore Hospital ....distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy. To say I am anxious is an understatement. Have to be there at 7am so leaving here at 5am to drive to Sydney. It's just hitting me now . Hope they get all the cancer . They seem to think it's contained in the Pancreas. 🙏🏿

Pancreatic cancer

Surgery on Wednesday 5th august . Pre-admission tomorrow at 1pm at Sydney Royal North Shore Hospital for my distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy. Also having a CT scan and an echocardiogram ( I need open heart surgery as I have mitral valve prolapse and severe regurgitation) the open heart surgery is next. To say I am anxious is an understatement. Been waiting 3 months for this as they had to get my heart sorted. I hope it hasn't spread . They say it looks contained in the pancreas but that was last scan 5 months ago. (Hence the CT tomorrow) . Who knows what they will find . I have decided that if the cancer has spread and they can't get it all out ......there is probably no use in me having the open heart surgery.

Hair loss again

MY hair was falling out, and it was hormonal. I started taking spironolactone and using minoxidil, and it grew back..... then 18 months later, it started falling out again, so I had blood tests, and I had low ferratin and haemoglobin. I started taking iron biscalate, vitamin c, and senior vitamins, and it started growing back. Now, 6 months later, it's falling out again. I found out recently I have to have a distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy soon because I have abnormal cells in my pancreas. I'm not sure if I have the big C or if its pre cancerous yet and won't know until they take it out . Is this why my hair is falling out again? I am also having open heart surgery to repair mitral valve prolapse and severe regurgitation very soon, too. I'm not sure which operation is first . The Surgeons are discussing which is first. What can I do?

Vaccinations

Having meningococcal and pheunmacoccal vaccines today In preparation for my open heart surgery. Since I have to also have a distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy due to abnormal cells in my pancreas.....my Gastroentoligist has advised I will need these vaccinations because I will be having a splenectomy. Not sure which surgery is first though yet . Doctors to discuss and decide which one first .
