The Bud Billiken® Parade is more than a procession of bands and floats marching down King Drive, it’s a commemoration of our past and a celebration of our future. Every summer since 1929, “The Bud” has united African-Americans throughout the city of Chicago in music, dance, food, and laughter. It’s one of the only spaces where we can openly and emphatically praise the historic roots that plant us into the South Side of Chicago.

These images, featured in a collection of nearly 6,000 historic pictures by photographer Richard Samuel Roberts of Columbia’s Black families and community, are all available free to the public online for the first time.

“What we are seeing when we look at these pictures is African Americans the way they wanted to be seen and remembered,” said Rachel Young, a historian at the Center for Civil Rights History and Research at the University of South Carolina. “We are also seeing people and places that have been erased, forgotten or ignored by a broader historical record.”

The digitization of the Roberts collection is the culmination of a decades-long effort by the Roberts family, librarians and researchers at the University of South Carolina.

I was in Liberty Corner the last time they had to scramble jets because some commercial pilot didn't heed the No Fly Zone warning. I could hear the jets roaring across the sky, but you couldn't see them. It made the windows vibrate. It gave me chills.

The old tweets are not the only material circulating. Boltinhouse has also been open about her political views. In a November 4, 2024 Facebook post under Sosa B Alondra, she urged people to vote for “the greater good,” criticized the previous four years and Kamala Harris, warned that America risked becoming a “Third World country,” and closed with:

“TRUMP 2024 with my nopal en la frente.”
