Found a cheat code for B12 Ring soaks for my Manual brothers and sisters
I went to do the Berryman B12 piston ring soak job on my 6 speed Manual B8S4 and got to the place where I needed to turn the crank to DTC for each set of cylinders to dump the B12 in. I knew there was a special crankcase socket tool and acquired it ahead of time but I couldn’t get my tools or hands through the top so I took off the bottom cover and still couldn’t gain enough access. I thought dreadfully of having to pull the bumper cover and put it into service mode and came up with a thought.
I jacked up the driver side wheel so it was off the ground, with the plugs pulled, I put the car in 6th gear and placed a dowel into one of the cylinders for a gauge and turned my wheel forward as the car would drive forward and I watched the dowel go up and down! You can find DTC using this method of jacking the driver side wheel and spinning the front driver wheel carefully. I was also able to spin the wheel enough to follow the procedure of the ring soak cleaning out the cylinders in order by just moving the dowel to the other cylinders and see when it hit the apex.
Next time you need to manipulate the crank position and you have a manual, see if this helps! Saved me my knuckles and time instead of putting it into service position on the 100 degree day outside. She’s all back up and running after the job so I must have not screwed he up to badly!
Is this common knowledge I just seemed to have over looked in the online directions or is everyone sporting automatics?
