Hey everyone,
planning a solo trip to Varanasi later this month and looking for the best low-cost hostel recommendations
.
I’m looking for answers to a few specific things:
Location: Which are the best hostels within walking distance of *Kashi Vishwanath Temple* or the main *Ghats*?
*Budget:*Are there reliable, clean dorms in the ₹250–₹500 range?
*Safety:* Which spots would you recommend as the best for a solo traveler on a student budget?
If you've stayed somewhere recently that was a great deal, please let me know!
Thanks!

Hey everyone,
I’m planning my first solo trip from **Chennai/Bangalore to Varanasi** in mid-May for a mental reset. Being a student, I’m sticking to Sleeper Class, but I’m facing huge waiting lists
A few quick questions for the experts:
* **What are the actual chances of a WL 100–200 clearing during the May rush?**
* **Should I book the WL now or just try my luck with Tatkal the day before?**
* **Is there any specific "hack" to get a Side Lower berth as a solo traveler?**
* **Would booking to DDU (Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya) instead of BSB increase my confirmation odds?**
* **Any "break-journey" or alternative routes if the direct trains are totally blocked?**
* **As a first-timer, any specific safety tips for a 40+ hour Sleeper journey to the North?**
Appreciate any advice on how to make this budget trip happen!

Hey everyone,
I’m an 18-year-old student currently finishing my semesters. The last few months have been a massive grind—recovering from some health issues while trying to balance CA/ prep and family expectations. I feel completely burnt out and "stuck," and I’ve realized I need a hard reset before I dive into my next exam cycle in September.
I’m planning a solo trip from Tamil Nadu to Kashi (Varanasi) in mid-May. Since I'm a student, I'm traveling on a very tight "backpacker" budget.
My Plan so far:
Travel: Taking the train (Sleeper Class) from the South.
Stay: Looking for the most affordable options—ideally Tamil Mutts (like Sri Kumaraswamy Mutt) or basic pilgrim dorms near Hanuman Ghat/Assi.
Food: Sticking to local street food and looking into temples that offer Annadhanams (free meals).
Transport: Planning to walk the Ghats and use Rapido/shared autos for everything else.
Questions for the Kashi community:
The Heat: I know May is brutal. If I stay indoors during the peak sun (11 AM – 5 PM) and only explore early morning or late night, is it manageable for a 3-4 day trip?
Safety: As an 18-year-old on my first major solo trip up North, are there specific areas or "scams" I should be wary of?
The "Reset": Has anyone else gone to Kashi specifically to clear their head after academic stress? Any quiet, less-crowded spots you’d recommend for just sitting and reflecting?
I’m not looking for a "vacation"—just a simple, spiritual reset to find some focus again. Any tips on budget-friendly stays or navigating the city as a solo student would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!
