I’m 39, newly based in South East Queensland, and looking for genuine advice on how to get a foot in the door with the public sector.

I have had 3 strokes a while back (2023). I’m capable, cleared to work, and genuinely eager to contribute. When I get the chance I’m hard-working and reliable. I’ve been applying for roles (admin, customer service, project support, entry-level policy/ops type positions) but so far nothing.

I’m not looking for sympathy or anythig like that. I’m looking for practical, genuine guidance from people who’ve been through the system or those who hire in it.

Things like:

-Which agencies or departments in QLD/SEQLD are more open to candidates with a medical history (or just less rigid about “perfect” career paths)?

-Any specific recruitment pathways, graduate programs, or entry points that are worth targeting at my age/experience level?

-Tips on how to address a career gap or health-related absence on applications/resumes without it becoming the main focus

-Whether networking, volunteering, or temp/contract work is a realistic way in right now

-Any honest feedback on what actually helps with public sector hiring managers or panels (I get really nervous and jumble my words)

I'm realistic about the competition and the process. I just want to make sure I’m not missing something obvious or going about it the wrong way.

Any genuine advice, experiences, or even “this is what worked for me” stories would be really appreciated.

I am happy to answer questions if more context helps.
