Maryland video game developers protest Microsoft layoffs in "Save Our Devs" rally outside Bethesda Game Studios offices in Rockville

Maryland is losing more than 350 jobs in Baltimore and Montgomery County as software giant Microsoft makes deep slashes to its video game divisions. Bethesda Game Studios workers are rallying outside ZeniMax offices across North America in Rockville, Austin, Dallas, and Montreal. They're calling it the "Save Our Devs" rally, finding support from Rockville Mayor Monique Ashton and the Communication Workers of America.

According to a notice filed with the state labor department this week, 166 roles were cut at ZeniMax Media in Rockville and 213 at ZeniMax Online Studios in Cockeysville, both of which are owned by Microsoft. The cuts will take effect Sept. 4.

Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Rockville-based Bethesda Game Studios, for $7.5 billion in 2021. The award-winning video game publisher is behind popular titles such as “Fallout,” “Starfield,” “Doom” and The Elder Scrolls. ZeniMax Online runs the online version of The Elder Scrolls.

This interview features Fallout and The Elder Scrolls game developers Jay Woodward, Stephanie Zachariadias, and Mandi Parker as well as Rockville Mayor Monique Ashton.

6pm, if nothing at 6pm....

Y'all have me hopeful. If today to celebrate the 40th anniversary, and they truly intend to reveal info on ESVI, it will be at 6pm. Y'know, the sixth game at 6pm... That's my last drop of hope tbh...

Lockpicking in ESVI?

Does this community think the next generation of Elder Scrolls, and Fallout, will have a new lockpicking minigame? What are you expecting the new mini game to be like if so?

Oblivion introduced the mini game for picking locks and for me it adds immersion, I loved it and appreciated it soo much.

Oblivion had the best IMO mini game for lockpicking, as it felt inspired by actual lock picking. Having to navigate pins, while hated by many, was fun and applicable to real life lockpicking.

Skyrim made lockpicking much more accessible, but also too easy.

Fallout 4 shares the same lockpicking mini game as Skyrim.

Then Starfield changes things up further, and goes into a digital route (only)...but it was more complex, and again felt inspired by real locks. Adding layers you have to navigate through, is similar to the rotating chambers in real life.

I don't know what direction they are headed, but lockpicking is one of my favorite aspects of Bethesda Games. If we had a mini game that combined the pins from Oblivion, with the rotations from Skyrim, I think it'd be amazing!

Once TESVI drops, the economy is gonna need life support

Link is for an article that came out about one month after Skyrim released.

Skyrim came out so long ago now, but I remember friends quitting their jobs to have more time to play this game. The unemployment rate skyrocketed.

After many hours waiting in line at Gamestop for my copy of the game, I came home and didnt stop. Id be daydreaming about the game when I was away. I spent Thanksgiving locked in my room, and my mother left me a plate outside my door; which was touched the following day.

Once TESVI releases, I imagine we will all be offline. People are gonna call out sick; some are gonna fake their own deaths. The sun will be blocked out of our rooms, and best believe the unemployment rate gonna shoot up. I imagine its release will potentially even halt WW3.

What are you going to do when the game actually releases? Do you have PTO saved up? Will you be lining up a second job ahead of time? Does your spouse know whats coming?
