Sir Roy Welensky.

He is one of the more important (and often overlooked) white settler politicians connected to beloved Zambia.

A Northern Rhodesian trade unionist who climbed the ranks to become Prime Minister of the Central African Federation from 1956 to 1963. The Federation combined Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), and Nyasaland (Malawi) under white-dominated rule.

Like we see in some social media circles today,
Welensky strongly defended the Federation and white political control over lands and resources that belonged to Africans through birthright.

God gifted Africans a mineral rich, beautiful land. For some reason Welensky thought God was wrong.

Welensky promoted the idea of gradual “racial partnership,” but in practice this meant keeping real power in white hands for as long as possible. In truth, He was a major obstacle to majority rule.

He worked hard against the clear wishes of most Africans in Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland. His goal was to keep the Federation

In 1959, during rising nationalist unrest in Nyasaland, federal forces (under the government he led) were deployed. A state of emergency was declared, nationalist leaders including Hastings Banda were detained without trial. It is believed that Welensky’s leadership directly caused 50 people to die in the resulting clashes and riots.. A disastrous outcome to say the least. It was so awful, the Devlin Commission criticized how the emergency was handled.

Welensky, similar to the current US President, used his governments emergency powers to keep him in power. He aggressively banned militant African parties , and relied on security forces to suppress political agitation and strikes.

Sir Roy knew the power of money. In the Copperbelt and elsewhere he forced the industrial colour bar that reserved better-paying skilled jobs for whites. By suppressing blacks from the better jobs he created a system of self perpetuated poverty.

So, how did Africans triumphed over the narrative?

The settler propaganda was that Africans were “not ready,” that partnership would take decades. It was white supremacy lies. To help keep control, They used relied on stereotypes of ignorance, low intelligence, no experience to perpetuate white supremacy . Welensky falsely believed that the Federation was the best path forward. Luckily African nationalists rejected this completely.

In Northern Rhodesia, Kenneth Kaunda and UNIP organized mass support and made majority rule non-negotiable. In Nyasaland, Hastings Banda and the Malawi Congress Party did the same.

Despite detentions, bans, emergency powers, and Welensky’s resistance, the pressure became impossible to ignore. Welensky was weak. Britain could clearly see his shortcomings. The entire world accepted that the Federation could not survive against African opposition.

By the end of 1963 the Federation collapsed. A failure like most British colonial rule.

Northern Rhodesia was victorious ! A beautiful Independent Zambia in 1964 under Kaunda emerged from the ashes. Also Nyasaland became Malawi.

The narrative of permanent or long-term white political control was a hilarious memory. It was defeated by organized African political mobilization. Zambia knew that United Africans were unstoppable and now they had proof.

Welensky later admitted some things came “too little, too late.” The outcome showed that strong, worthy determined nationalist movements could overcome the weak foolish settler political project in the region.

Zambia refused the failure of Welensky’s wacky world. It was a colonial future written for them by undeserving white settler politicians. Zambian forced a new narrative of freedom into existence. Congratulations to them. 👏
