Let's Play AITAH (VC Andrews Style)

If a VC Andrews character were to go on the AITAH sub-reddit, what would they say?

I will do Corrine first (it's horrifying, but there was tragically a case recently where a grandmother and mother did poison four siblings).

______________________

I am the 33-yo mother of four children in Pennsylvania.

When I got married at 18, I had been expecting to maintain a certain lifestyle I had gotten used to with my parents. My husband promised to provide for me in exchange for me staying home and taking care of his kids. But now he's gone, and it's difficult to find work because my kids take up so much of my time.

So I came up with a plan to take them to my wealthy parents' house in Virginia, figuring my mother could watch them while I look for a job. Which is great because who can afford childcare, right? I thought it was the perfect solution, but my kids don't seem to understand. They keep crying about how they miss their friends and how their grandmother never lets them do anything fun, and it's hard for me because I feel like I'm being the bad guy, but they just don't understand how difficult it is. I'm taking a typing class. That's a couple hours out of my week. I'm helping care for my dad who is not doing well. I make sure to spend an hour or two a day with him so that he doesn't get lonely. And then I have all of these friends who put demands on my time, expecting me to go to the movies, or go on blind dates with their hot, single brothers, or go sailing. That eats up an entire weekend. And I just don't have the ability to be ten places at once.

I do try to spend at least an hour or so a week with my children. Or if not that, maybe once a month. Here and there. And when I do stop by, they're always involved in one little project or another. My oldest is great at coming up with ideas to keep them occupied. It's like there's no point in me even being there. I'm just a distraction, really. But they still complain to me about how bored they are or that I'm not letting them have every single thing they want exactly when they want it because they don't seem to understand you can't get everything you want in life. You have to have patience. I think I might have spoiled them a little too much when they were younger. That's my fault, I admit it. Their father always did say I was too soft on them.

On top of that, my younger two have been giving my mother a hard time, testing their limits and seeing how far they can push her. Then they cry to me when she punishes them.

I admit, I was never the disciplinarian. That was always my husband's role. So it's hard to see them deprived of one little thing or another. But they need to learn to behave.

I recently learned that my father has written up a new will so that I can inherit everything because both my brothers are dead, but he hates even the idea of my children for some reason. And I'm worried he might reconsider leaving me his millions over something so small as their existence. It puts me in a difficult spot.

So I'm thinking I might have to get rid of the kids. Not anything too drastic. Maybe just a little suspicious powdery substance on the donuts I bring up to them. They love donuts. It's their favorite treat, so I think they'll appreciate that. I told my mother about my idea, but she thinks it's a mistake.

Then there are my kids, especially my older daughter. She keeps telling me I'm a horrible mother, when all I've tried to do is consider what's in all of our best interests. I'm worried I've lost control of my kids and that they don't respect me.

AITAH? NTA? Or does ESH?

What Do Chris Jr. and Lou Bega Have in Common? (Sorry For Another Snarky Chris Post)

Remember when Chris tried to make Cathy feel guilty because he had so many girlfriends and no one to love? I don't know, but this sounds a little like wish fulfillment. Wasn't he the one who dreamed of briefly being a play boy before he buckled down and made their father proud?

We saw Cathy fulfilling her dreams of becoming a professional ballerina and probably stuffing her face full of ice cream, cheese and crackers between scenes. What do you wanna bet Chris was living it up too, like he was in a Duran Duran video? Or in a Lou Bega song. "Angela, Pamela, Sandra and Rita..."

Hours to list all his girlfriends? Seriously?

“ ' Well, should I begin to list them one by one, and by name? If I did it would take several hours. If there had been someone special, all I would do is name one—and I can’t do that. I liked them all . . . but I didn’t like any well enough to love, if that’s what you want to know. ' "

Cathy Takes Things Way Too Seriously

Yes, the title is sarcastic 😄

I've decided Chris is that guy in a horror movie who doesn’t take the threat seriously.

If Chris is scared, you know something's up. Even if he's laughing and joking, something's probably up. So if he's scared, the train is probably on top of you.

In like a Lion, Out like a Lamb

I keep thinking about what the delivery man says to Audrina when he tells her it's March.

“ ' Why, it’s the month of March, girl, come in like a lion. And soon it will go out like a lamb.' "

It occurred to me that this kind of describes Audrina herself.  At the beginning, she was a lion, the way she talked back to those boys, but she ended up more like a lamb, being led along by the adults in her life, sacrificing herself and her autonomy for their own happiness.

In the chapter "Lions and Lambs," she actually tries to assert herself a few times, thinking she knows the solution to all of her problems but keeps getting put in her place.

And then I realized this seems to be a recurring theme in VCA's books.  How many characters have gone into a situation strong, with their pride intact, only to be humbled in the end, maybe even sacrificed?

Cathy's revenge blows up in her face, literally, when Foxworth Hall explodes into flames.  Audrina takes a stand against Papa finally, only to back down and realize her role in life is to sacrifice herself for the good of her younger sister.  I'm rereading Dark Angel, and I just reread the confrontation between Heaven and Rev Wise.  She gets up the nerve to confront him about raping her sister and stealing her baby.  His response?  “ ' I do believe it’s one of my sheep coming to be embraced, at last, into the fold.' "
And despite her pride and fierce determination, she eventually crumbles, ready to sacrifice everything she previously stood for, telling herself it's for the good of the baby.  And she leaves his home humbled.  (By the way, I was pretty impressed with a VCA character at least making an effort to call out a predatory relationship involving the abuse of someone everyone else called a promiscuous girl. Was this a first?)

At the end of Dark Angel, a character literally sacrifices their life in a battle with an actual lion.  This was a result of Heaven thinking she was gonna finally get some justice and stand up to Pa.

When she stands up to another lion in the first book -- Kitty -- her most prized possession ends up being sacrificed in a fire.

VCA refers to the month of August as the "month of the lion" in Heaven when they're planning Kitty's birthday.  August is when the Dollanganger siblings went into the attic.  When they escaped, they were ready for a fight, but in the end, they just slipped out into the night and no one cared.

I think Bart Jr. was probably a Leo.  Another reference to a lion. His father once selected a lion from his box of animal crackers to behead. And that seems to be a statement. Cathy thought she was gonna be the dominant one in that relationship. She was wrong.

Carrie was like a little lioness who turned quiet and meek and ended up being sacrificed in the end.

There I go, overanalyzing stuff.  Hopefully this makes some sense.

Chris Sr.

What are your thoughts on the first chapter of FitA?

Any headcanon regarding Chris Sr? What are your thoughts on him? Was there anything that stuck out to you during a reread?

I suspect Chris Sr. had a second family. He spent so much time on the road. Cathy acts like her father insisting on spending the weekend with them is some big flex. And he seemed a bit emotionally manipulative, upon rereads. For example, when he confronted Cathy about her complicated 6-yo emotions and then turned it around to make it about him and how she didn't love him enough.

I think the police officers were way out of line and very suspicious.

I loved Jim Johnston. He's the hidden star of this chapter. Kinda like a Kathy Santoni (Full House reference), in that he keeps coming up. He'd totally be in the Netflix documentary about this family, saying he knew they were weird all along. He called them the "Dresden Dolls."

And I'm sorry, Chris, but paraphrasing your mother's own definition of "disinherit" and acting like it makes you some human dictionary does not impress me at all!

What are your thoughts?

"Be yourself with flair." Tony Tatterton

I did some experimenting in the flair department. There are a few options you can add to a post, but you should be able to edit your own flair as well. Please check it out and make sure you are able to do so. I also added a new banner and icon. The banner was created using Canva graphics.

Does anyone want to brainstorm flair ideas for this community?

My Breakdown of the Dollanganger Series

I have been rereading the original books and have been journaling about the experience (basically doing sarcastic recaps, with great love of course.) There are spoilers, but I leave some spoilers out to create a little mystery.

I can't post it all here, though I have on Wordpress (Tuesday Teatimes w/VC Andrews). But I thought I would share some of the blog titles here for the first series. I also discuss MSA and Heaven in the blog.

How would you recast the Casteel series?

I was so disappointed with much of the casting.

Heaven is supposed to have dark hair! Leigh is blond! I picture Heaven looking like Shannen Doherty or Jennifer Connelly in the '80s. Kitty looking like Peg Bundy and being crazy. Troy was too old. And Tom had no personality in the script. Also, they toned down Ma and Pa a bit.

Let's Make This Garden Grow Again

I just wanted to create a post letting everyone know that I have been added as the new mod, and I look forward to hopefully getting a good discussion going on here again. I helped moderate a VC Andrews messageboard back in the day, so I know the dirt on these characters! And I'm more than willing to go digging for more if you'll join me!

To get started, what's your favorite book by V.C. Andrews?
