Downtown LA is 1% of the land and 16% of LA’s jobs

Even when situated in the center of a car-dependent sprawl, and despite being neglected and under-maintained for decades, dense urban cores will consistently account for an immense amount of a region's economic activity.

[OC] A 1.29-acre house in Los Angeles pays more property tax than the 308-acre country club across the street

Half the restaurants in Los Angeles sit in 17 of its 114 neighborhoods (Downtown, Hollywood & Ktown are really in a their own league)

I built the datasets behind this article and thought you all may enjoy it!

Edit: Title should say in 20 neighborhoods.

[OC] Every developed parcel in Los Angeles County colored by year built

Source: LA County Assessor 2025 secured roll, 2.4M parcels.

Tool: Python (numpy & Pillow).

One mark per parcel, colored by decade. Whenever parcels stack in a single pixel it's just drawn as their mean color at full saturation with brightness from the count, since otherwise density would just wash the hue to gray.

2,198,708 parcels drawn. 219,088 have no usable year and aren't shown, possibly going to be fixed in a second version when I find the right source.

Big caveat: YearBuilt is the building standing there *today*. Demolitions aren't on the roll, so early decades are undercounted by what didn't survive to the present day. It's what's still standing, not when LA was built.

Enjoy!

[OC] A year of LAPD helicopter flights over Los Angeles, drawn as accumulated time in the air. There is no basemap: everything you see was drawn by the helicopters.
