The original post was in r/PeterExplainsTheJoke.

From what I gathered reading the comments, it seems like the prevailing opinion about Ed is that he is a generic, mainstream pop artist. And reasonably, that's kinda fair, given that the average listener mainly knows his hits, which are hits for a reason, namely being pop. A classic chicken and egg situation, but that's how the industry works. Frankly, I still can't stand Perfect since it was played ad nauseam on every radio station all the time. I myself fell in love with Ed's music by chance, stumbling into some (relatively) lesser known songs, not his hits.

BUT one thing is being a casual listner and not even have the information to appreciate Ed's talent as a songwriter. Another is hating on a popular artist who is also a human being, due to prejudice, stereotype, or just his popularity. Some of those comments made me extremely sad and angry. People are really prone to being extra rude for no reason. I have no idea how artists cope with the constant hate they're exposed to, I'd crumble into pieces and hide away.

So Todd did have some brains (and a Camero, and power) after all

Jameela Jamil managed to be smart and compassionate while addressing the elephant in the room.

Nothing but respect for her and encouragemebt for Ariana to get better and stop this bodychecking madness (and actually recover, but that's another issue)

u/Infinite-Pea-4785 — 18 days ago

Just seen this and, honestly not knowing much about how algorithms currently work in music promotion, I ask: thoughts?

I get that a likely possibility is that she wanted to emphasize her lyrics, not the melody, since belts and vocal athletics could have been distracting.

But algorithm-compliance is something that didn't even cross my mind, being frankly ignorant about the matter. I just knew that songs have to be suitable for social media reels and content in order to be more widely known and therefore streamed, and that their length should be less than 3 minutes / 2:30 minutes...but that's about it. Any opinions?

ETA: this is NOT MY OPINION. Genuinely curious because I don't have enough info to form mine. If anything, I don't think Ariana even needs to care about Spotify because she's one of the reasons many even have it in the first place, but who knows

1st Petal listen. Honestly beyond sad and worried, I don't even know how else to summarize this

I'm emotional writing this and will probably write something making more sense later, but I don't have anyone to say this to without having them worried/triggered, so here we are.

I don't know where to begin. Aside from the amazing production and less than amazing vocals, the main character in this album is pain. I'm not only talking about obvious, specific lyrics. It's the album as a whole that strikes me as beyond concerning. I can't her anything but the suffering of a woman who hates where she got in life, REGARDLESS, let me specify this, of how she got there. Meaning, some are appalled by the homewrecking scandal and that can be rightful, but who's to blame the people or herself isn't my point here.

Anyways, I'm saying that I do hear a victim crying for help (whether that's fair or not to say). If anything, a victim of herself and the life she threw herself into, the public being a consequence of it. Being familiar with EDs, I was so very moved by some lyrics which, at least to me, clearly point to that.

And what's even more saddening to me is that all this sadness will probably be lost on listners who will stop at the "breakup" content, while here the breakup is from fans, fame, and (hopefully not) life. Big Feelings, Bad Thing, a s Never Get Over Me don't really leave much room for interpretation, but, at least to me, it sounded like not one of the other songs was purely about romance (and gossip about Ethan, Ricky and whoever) or lack thereof. When you read the lyrics with a watchful eye, you'll find sadness/regret/anger which, in light of her current health state, leave me absolutely speechless.

I didn't want to buy into the Petal death imagery, because while apparently evident, it had to be absurd too, right? Wrong, now I can't unhear meanings about death, giving up, fighting a fight her body is now showing.

Despite (or maybe because of) Ariana's wrongdoings, at least for me, her pain is evident and I can't help feeling so very sorry for someone so broadly loved and hated, and yet evidently so misunderstood.

TLDR: I see lots of pain in these lyrics, and I'm honestly very, very sorry for Ariana, whatever she did or whatever brought her here. I'm genuinely scared by the death imagery and lyricism I previosuly refused to buy into. Maybe Bad Thing, Big Feelings, and Never Get Over Me leave a little space for some romance or lack thereof, but the other songs are all so dark, at least to me. Long rant, hope it makes sense

This (27th July) might be her worst non-tour related photodump yet

and I'm so, so mad at a platform like Instagram to allow slides 4, 13 and 14 to be there. It's just unethical bc at this point it's beyond her own illness, it affects viewers too. She knows very well what she's doing and it wouldn't cost her anything to not post photos enhancing her thinness.

This comes from a moment of pure sadness and anger, sorry if it comes off as unkind. I really try to always not be that way, seeing all possible points of view, but what I'm seeing in these picture just makes me sad and frustrated. We are all responsible for our own triggers, but one thing is just existing in an underweight body, which of course ariana and anyone else can do, another is flaunting it. I'm just so angry and sorry. Am I overreacting? What do you think? (I've been very underweight myself too and I see how problematic this all is, this doesn't come from a place of ignorance, sadly)

Edit: I realize the point I'm making in the 1st paragraph has already been made over and over. But it keeps on getting worse and worse and it doesn't show any signs of improving (not saying that ariana isn't recovering, I hope she is. I'm saying she's still relentlessly bodychecking)

Something addressed to a specific user, hoping they see it: I see you, you are brave. But also generally hopefully useful in these difficult discussions

I distinctly recall someone around here saying they were in therapy, and decided to follow their therapist's advice to post their own opinions (kinder and more reasonable than the blindly snarky ones they didn't agree with) despite possible disagreements. I couldn't find their post anymore, so I guess they may have taken it down as they said they likely would have.

Well, to that person, and applying to anyone afraid of speaking their minds or trying to gain the confidence to do so in highly devisive discussions like the latest ones, I say:

You did something great opening up. You were kind, sincere, and most of all brave for doing something you were very afraid of. Of course people will agree and disagree with you, that's being human. We can't be friends liked by everybody, and we all have our backgrounds which make us read even a single word differently than another person would.

The user said that some snarkers did indeed make good points, even if not very kindly sometimes (but hey that's snarking), BUT many were straight up being evil, unreasonable and unnecessarily angry. That makes me so so sad personally too for countless reasons, Ariana's sake being only one of them. It's stressful to see such mean and angry behavior if you aren't wired for it. Gentler souls do exist. But it's also true that not everybody has to be, and I'm sorry to say that that's okay. We are all different, what matters is that your conscience is clear. Even the meanest snarker can be going through tough times and coping through anger. Anyways you can't stop people from having temperaments you don't condone, but you can walk away knowing the reasons why you think the way you do and remaining OPEN to agreements and criticism alike.

This is something, I fear, very useful right now in this sub: being neutral and having to face different attitudes isn't always easy, neither should it be. Let's just not forget that, in the end, we are all struggling human beings who could all use some mutual help. (What I will NEVER be understanding about is things like wishing death upon others, and I don't think there's much more to be said about that).

So, if the above user is reading this, thank you for sharing your perspective. You aren't wrong for having an opinion, we each have our own. Keeping things respectful and tolerant, if you can, even when others can't, in the only thing that matters.

If anyone else got up to here, thanks for reading. This is a plead for us to be kind towards each other, because if we see Ariana struggling and we are compelled to comment it means that we do, deep down, have the similar wish for things to be better. (Edited for typo)

Her last photodump. I don't know about you, I'm just sad

Slide 7 and 16 gave tears to my eyes. I'm just so sorry she's in this situation. Help or no help, "karma" or no karma, no one deserves that.

Whatever the reason (not saying what I really think and what is basically obvious by now), it looks like she's suffering immensly, because you don't get tinier and tinier if you love yourself a tiny bit.

Having known that kind of state of mind, if that's the case, I'm just so sorry for her and I don't want her to d!e. Maybe I'm overreacting. I'm just sad.

Also, those lollipops everywhere every time. Now I understand how people around you must feel when you can't bring yourself to eat

"You have great t*ts. They're really beautiful"...Sooo she knows about the nip slip

A video she just posted in her story. Apparently, the nip slip was intentional😂

I feel so wierd for writing this. Definitely not in my bingo card. I don't know what to think myself, honestly a bit of laughter and light-heartedness around/after that particular photo dump was well needed

Seriously? Despicable, not even just dystopian anymore

This picture comments itself. I want to be empathetic, because she must be going through hell in the depth of what's obviously going on.

But this is plain selfishness shoved in our faces. We get it, you're tiny, but if you choose this picture as worthy of attention between thousands, you're frankly not doing any good.

Sorry if this is overreacting. I just can't with all the INTENTIONAL harm she's doing as a literal beauty influencer. She has all the right to live in her body and post herself, but there's a difference between "regular" photos, bodychecks and whatever this is.

(No hate to Amanda, the bigger lady, in any way. I just mean that she's not being posted alongside ariana solely because the picture looks good and that's despicable).

u/Infinite-Pea-4785 — 2 months ago

Yeah, RIGHT (inside sources, their fairytales and a rant)

This is from an article I just read, and there are also other appearing these days from "inside sources" like slugs after it rains, all somehow putting her in a better light.

This one had me raise my eyebrows to the sky. A person who is "just stressed" doesn't let herself get to a point where she could be hospitalized, and, even if that were the remote case, she wouldn't post bodychecks continuously. Or, you know, constantly purposefully exposing her shoulders and collar bones, or only be seen eating gum, black coffee and lollipop even with a birthday cake in front of her.

Of course she must be in enormous amounts of stress, not to mention all kinds of trauma (this articole also deals with that horrible Nickelodeon trial), but this is a cover-up an it couldn't be any more obvious.

It's all just so triggering. First, the "don't comment on my body" narrative, which from a certain standpoint I can understand, having struggled myself. Then, the obvious bodychecks, and, before that, the "I'm the healthiest I've ever been" narrative. Now apparently these are the normal effects stress has on a normal body. I simply can't. It would cost her nothing to admit she's struggling or at least to avoid spreading these news and denial.

And before someone attacks me, yes, we are responsible for our own triggers and maybe I'm being too entitled or fragile. And yes, ariana is allowed to live and work in whatever body she has at a certain time. But she could easily choose different tour outfits, or stop posting photos where she's clearly being proud of her thinness. And for goodness sake, stop promoting all those narratives where she's fine, which I can't stress enough, because, pun unintended, now apparently she's "just stressed" and that's stressing me out enormously.

I used to be sorry for her for everything she's been through, because more often than not we are responsible for our own problems and that's a human thing. But now I find her plain insufferable, because SHE KNOWS perfectly where online her photos are being used as an inspiration to lose weight. It's just all so disgusting and unfair, especially when, on the other hand, so many people will deny the obvious or, lucky for them, not pay attention. And God forbid one points out how awful all of this is, suddenly you are the culprit and the kind of person who masks hate for concern. Now, I quite frankly do hate her, and I hope it's a phase because I hate hating. The concern is for what she is causing, knowingly, and masking it herself with health and healing.

Sorry for the long rant. I have nowhere else to say this withiut being bullied.

Also, if you want to read the article:

That A5!!!!

Ok, many say she doesn't sound her best, which I personally don't agree with. Still, tonight she sung that legendary A5 in Dangerous Woman, which she hasn't publicly in years. So yes, there's many "bad" things associated to this tour, but Ariana still manages to be the vocalist of a generation. Just wanted to share something positive for once, which had me personally drop my jaw

I just know the 2014 Victoria's Secret fashion show was an ordeal for her

Disclaimer: I don't absolutely mean it in an offensive way, I'm genuinely sorry and writing this to see what anyone else thinks

The VS Fashion show is questionable in many respects, but it's also a MAJOR TRIGGER for anyone who struggles with body image.

I myself have battled EDs all my life, but there isn't one single woman I've talked to who, not having problems with food and their bodies, didn't find it somehow upsetting. Especially in the 2010s, it was a celebration of perfection and unattainable beauty standards, and that's just a fact (not saying that naturally tall and slim people don't exist, but VS takes all that to an extreme, adding dangerous glamour).

Even back in those days, it seems it was knows that Ariana had an ED, even if it surely wasn't as "concerning" as it was now, and not everybody knew.

So now I'm thinking about how horrible it must have been for her to walk a runway where, as tiny as she objectively was, she was still not as "perfect" as the models (NOT claiming she was ugly in any way. I just mean that, when you have an ED or a difficult relationship with your body, that can be a very bad experience in your mind).

Maybe it's a coincidence, still after that, around 2016, she was almost at Wicked-level thinness.

Someone in her shoes must have faced an incredible amount of pressure to look very good at that runway, as any female singer did.

Of course her job was to sing, but can you imagine knowing that every eye in the media is looking at your body right next to the epitomes of thinness and beauty? (Again, not at all equating the two)

Of course things are different for male singers, but that's another story for another subreddit. This might sound random, it just came to me seing how thin she is, and knowing that VS fashion shows are absolute nightmares for ED victims. Thoughts?

Here me out: HTIMYLM may not (only) be about toxic fans

(TLDR at the end) It seems like everyone agrees that Hate That I Made You Love Me can be interpreted as Yes, And? and We Can't Be Friends have been: an anthem against toxic fans and Ariana reclaiming her true self despite what people say. I won't dive deep into that. It can very well be true, but in light of everything that seems to be happening to her lately, I think there can be a not-so-subtext explaination for HTIMYLM and it's crazy to me that no one seems to have pointed it out so here it goes.

Honestly, for a "feral" song against haters, it's not that feral. It screams melancholy, containing the concept of being sorry at the very second verse of the chorus, and stressing the idea of bad news, yet with the possibility of finding one's way from harm.

Now, we know about (at least part of) Ariana's traumatic experiences, and the whole public opinion shift she went through during the last years. That all may very well (nor saying it is, not to offend anyone who might think otherwise) be related to the issue she's sadly becoming known for lately, and really since Wicked, and especially now that, with her tour, we have raw, unedited footage of her.

Anyone who, sadly, knows what an eating disorder is, knows how it feels: it's like a lover, who enters your life and becomes such a big part of it. You love it with all your heart, because it makes you different in a way you like, at least at first. And it loves you back, showering you with gifts, first and foremost the gift of becoming its type, which you love because you hated yourself to begin with.

It's much like a toxic relationship, with a fan or with a lover alike.

It studies who you are, your failures and your successes, until you become indistinguishable from it. It takes your mind, it borrows your body.

(References to lyrics are in italics. Original lyrics below) But there comes a time when you're tired of being something borrowed. Something dances with fire, because, you want so badly to get rid of that costantly toxic lover at your side.

It was your honey, now you feel like a bee stuck in it. But, despite how sweet honey tastes, you know you need to find your way from it.

Still, it won't be all lossess and pain, since, as any toxic relationship which found its end, it will make you stronger. You will be able to flourish and bloom like a flower, burying that toxicity in a tomb you can visit whenever. Your tears created something as beautiful as a diamond.

You can see right through all the lies your disorder told you now, but it's hard to let go of it nonetheless. It likes you where you are, in a place of confusion, dispair and grief, in a body it borrowed.

It's all dark now, as night. The moon would be the only thing guiding you, and yet somehow it managed to eclipse it, leaving you totally blind.

It's bad news now, because, maybe not now, but you WILL find your way from all that darkness.

And who knows, maybe having that constant devil on your shoulder made it also hard to live life and have healthy relationships, or maybe viceversa. It made you good at goodbyes.

Somehow, now you have to decide who you are now that you are by yourself, and that applies to you and the disorder both, since you became one.

You barely tried in this particular relationship, since it seemed easier than the others, or maybe because you were so tired. And yet it sticked to you, so much so that now you hate you made the disorder love you in the first place. It once made you feel warm and special and lucky, as if you had been kissed by the sun. Now though, it got lonely, and hard, and cold, but then again, that's exactly what disorders of the sort are for: a way to feel something, physically and emotionally, hot and cold, different than what you're trying to numb down.

That's why you held its projections when you've felt so insecure, because it made you feel something, or feel like someone else you might like, not hate.

***

I can't tell you why

But something inside is dancing with fire

Eyes lit like the sky, turned tears into diamonds

Got good at goodbyes

Just know that I will find my way from you

Like flowers from a tomb while you decide who you are

And I can see right through, ooh, like shadows on the moon

And it's all bad news

Yeah, I, I, I hate that I made you love me

Sorry if I made me your type

Yeah, I, I hate that I made you love me

'Cause I barely tried, yeah, I, I, I

What's happening now?

You studied my crown and borrowed my body

Warm, kissed by the sun, then cold like the wind

A bee stuck in honey

Know that I will find my way from you (my way from you)

I guess it's kind of cute how you like me where you are

But I can see right through (right through), ooh (ooh)

Just don't eclipse the moon 'cause it's all bad news

Yeah, I, I, I hate that I made you love me

Sorry if I made me your type

Yeah, I, I hate that I made you love me (hate that I made you)

'Cause I barely tried, yeah, I, I, I (ooh-ooh, yeah)

I've held your projections when you've felt so insecure

Tell me, why is it this way?

Why you so hate to see women endure?

Is it really my fault you all gave me your hearts on your own accord?

I don't really think so

I, I hate that I made you love me (baby)

Sorry if I made me your type

Yeah, I, I hate that I made you love me

'Cause I barely tried

Yeah, I, I, I hate that I made you love me (baby)

Sorry if I made me your type (sorry if I made me your type)

Yeah, I, I hate that I made you love me (ooh)

'Cause I barely tried, yeah, I, I, I

***

Another thing which, in this light, would make sense, is the use of both the 1st and the 2nd person, because, again, you and the ed become one, which is precisely why at a point, you get so frustrated you have to ask why is it this way?

Why does society through EDs, and EDs themselves, hate to see women endure and thrive?

2 things can be true at once though, and of course another toxic relationship Ariana is in os the one with her fans, which she directly addresses (you all gave me your hearts on your own accord).

(TLDR:) I know it may seem far-fetched, but honestly, as someone who knows eating disorders all too well, this was the first interpretation I gave the song on my first listen. Given what Ariana seems to be going through, especially during the last two years or so, the song may be actually addressed to a toxic relationship which isn't only with her fans, but also with herself and her body as a consequence of something else. She's trying to find its way from it, like flowers from a tomb, but it's not easy. Like anyone who's endured something of the sort, she'd be sorry she made herself a different "type" to fit into her own expectations.

(This isn't to say that every other interpretation is wrong, just that this one, more introspective and nuanced, is also very likely, despite being maybe less mainstream and more private. I beg you not to be rude if you want to answer)

I get why Justin Bieber won, but...

Justin was a menace at Coachella. I'm not a great fan of his but it's undeniable that he gained back lots of traction with an objectively emotional performance.

What few know though (outside of this sub, I imagine) is that ***Ed*** wrote most of his hits.

Granted, Justin Bieber is not bad as a singer, but without Ed's melodies and lyrics, would he really have gotten to where he is now?

The thing is that last year, with Play, Ed experimented and tried new sounds and styles, risking so to speak but still delivering (with some upd and some downs, granted).

Bieber won, mostly, thanks to Ed's past work. I don't think that his new most popular songs are what made people vote him, because quite frankly, as a neutral listner, I myself haven't happened to bump into one of those even once, and they don't seem to have that much media exposure. I might be wrong of course.

I might be biased, but personally, I find it hard not to find these results off-putting.

TL;DR: Justin Bieber is likely to have won thanks to past hits, written by Ed, who lost the AMA 2026 awards. I understand it's not unfair so to speak, but it still isn't really pleasant, to me at least. Also, if you want to write something rude, this post isn't meant for you.

This comes from the perspective of someone who's been teaching herself Spanish, HUMBLY poiting out something I just noticed.

In Spanish, the show seems a bit more vulgar so to speak. Words which are vulgar in English, but not really unspeakable, get translated in Spanish with heavier words (for example: butt becomes "culo", which is nearer to ass tone-wise; or bitch, when intended as jerk or jokingly, becomes "puta" regardless; and countless others).

Now, in my country, shows are notoriously dubbed toning down unpleasantries (himym would be ok for, say, a 16 year old), yet it seems like many shows, HIMYM included, do the opposite when it comes to their Spanish dubbing.

(TLDR:) No offense, really, just trying to understand: is the Spanish version purposefully a bit more adult-friendly? Or is it lack of equivalent, mid-tier words in Spanish on the lower end of vulgarity? Thanks!

We know that Ted is a character in his own story, and that he can be an unreliable narrator sometimes. This scene (for context, the one where Ted is recalling telling Tracy about Robin's mother eventually coming to her wedding) is also obviously very emotional for him, and it's about the very reason why he's telling his children the story in the first place.

So, is this Ted, as he sometimes does, projecting events in his story? Is he imagining that Tracy said those words, acknowledging that she won't be able to attend their own daughter's wedding?

Or was she actually already sick by that time, and that dialogue actually took place?

Personally, I'd always taken for granted the latter, but a while ago, when I rewatched that scene specifically, I became unsure. What do you think?

(Specifying this because many people around here aren't exactly nice: if you want to reply something rude, save it for yourself, otherwise thanks for your answer)
