Seeking advice after stuck oil filter gasket almost led to catastrophe.

Putting this out there so others might learn from my mistake.

I recently gave my ‘22 Scrambler 1200 a major overhaul which included valve checks and an oil change. Afterwards, I took the bike around the neighborhood a few times without any apparent issues. On its first longer highway ride, I got a “low oil pressure” warning. Luckily, this happened just as I was exiting the freeway and was <1mi from my destination. The coolant temp remained normal as I limped the bike to my destination. When I got off the bike, there was already a puddle of oil forming on the ground and the entire rear end, including the tire and brake, was covered in oil.

I trailered the bike home and, upon inspection, found an extra gasket when I removed the oil filter. The old oil filter gasket must have stuck to the bottom of the oil pan. I didn’t notice and I put a new filter right on top of it, causing the leak.

With the rear tire and brake coated in oil, I am lucky that I didn’t have a wreck. Also grateful that the engine didn’t seize.

I already plan to replace the remaining oil/filter, recheck the valves, and obviously inspect the top end for damage. To anyone here with more expertise than I: What would you do at this point in this situation? What specific signs of damage should I be looking for?
