Tachometer Help

Hello! A month into my first e30 (1991 318i manual US, which does originally have an m42 it’s not swapped look it up), and the tachometer hasn’t worked since I owned the car. I do not know why it doesn’t, but I needed to replace backlighting in the cluster so figured I’d check the SI board and the batteries while I’m here. All of my cluster works fine but the tachometer.

Don’t know what I’m looking at here, does anyone have advice on what to do here? Order of components to test/check if they’re the issue? Do I go pin to pin and check solder? Also the batteries look fine to me. Not sure the SI board was the place to start. Anything helps…

BONUS: if anyone has broken an ear off the cluster when removing it and could share how they fixed/managed it that would be welcome.

M42 Engine Help

Bought my first E30 a few weeks ago. I love the 4 doors, and I found a guy who didn’t really know what he had - got a 1991 318i with no significant rust at all. Runs and drives, 144k miles, it’s just there’s some engine noise and rough idle that’s not great and I need to fix some things so I’m not driving it until I do.

It’s got an M42, and I know the timing components are gonna need attention. Do I just replace the timing chain tensioner and see what happens? Or do I buy the entire timing chain component kit? They’re just pretty expensive so I gotta figure this out.

Also, does anyone have a suggestion on where to find the best timing chain replacement kit for a good price? I know that the 91 318i is a rare model too, so anyone with experience who can share any helpful info please do!

Cool Picture

Just thought I’d share this shot I got of my flytrap. It’s doing very well. First time it has actually caught a housefly. Pretty sweet shot of the catch! Little guy wasn’t very happy!

Flynn’s Tires Slogan

Hey Yinzers, this is potentially a pretty stupid question, but rather here than in a shop and make myself look nuts. Every Flynn’s tires ad on the radio or TV ends with the little leprechaun saying “And tell em Flynnie sent ya!” Obviously it’s a nod to classic Irish hospitality and is in theme with their brand, but it seems too direct of a command not to actually mean anything. So my question to you all and Flynn Tire people is: is there some sort of discount if you go to the front desk and say “Flynnie sent me.” I know it sounds ridiculous, but I don’t know why else they’d be so intentional about directing you to do something. Maybe I’m thinking about it too much… anyone know the answer?

What are these buttons?

I can’t figure out what these buttons are. They don’t do anything that I can see. But I also just bought my first e30, can’t drive it yet due to some difficulties, so I haven’t tried too many things. Anyone know? It’s a 1991 318i.

EDIT: 318i not 381i lol

Postgame Song?

Does anyone know if there is a name to the postgame song on the radio after a game? It’s a fun pirate-themed song that goes unbelievably hard. Wondering if there’s a name to it or not.

EDIT: not “new pirates generation,” it’s the one they play on the radio while reading stats/sponsors, not the one in PNC park
