How to deal with Detritus?

Hi, I’m semi-new to the hobby and my tank is almost always overrun with it. All I have stocked is one betta and 2 pumpkin nerite snails. Almost always, the floor of my tank is covered with detritus. While I try to siphon every week to deal with it, it always comes back one way or another. I don’t know what to do anymore, my plants are struggling to grow because of it, and I’m scared my betta is going to be affected. If this helps, I have a 5 Gal with a HOB filter, currently with a basic filter cartridge and ceramic rings. Please help me; this is the most frustrating thing about my tank and it’s so annoying.

I just got my bio-fluval startum off amazon and I washed it as the bag said too, but when I look at other places, it said that you shouldn’t. Did I do something wrong? Can I still use it?

Hi, I’m a beginner at fish keeping and I have a lidded tank because I have a cat. I’ve been seeing recommendations to get floater plants, but I’m unsure if it’s needed or if they would grow because of the lid. What should I do?
