How to deal with Detritus?

Hi, I’m semi-new to the hobby and my tank is almost always overrun with it. All I have stocked is one betta and 2 pumpkin nerite snails. Almost always, the floor of my tank is covered with detritus. While I try to siphon every week to deal with it, it always comes back one way or another. I don’t know what to do anymore, my plants are struggling to grow because of it, and I’m scared my betta is going to be affected. If this helps, I have a 5 Gal with a HOB filter, currently with a basic filter cartridge and ceramic rings. Please help me; this is the most frustrating thing about my tank and it’s so annoying.

I think that my fish is dying

For starters, he is a Jack Dempsey cichlid that’s about 8 years old. Recently me and my bf had noticed that he was getting white spots. Figured out that he had ich. Went to the pet store and got ich attack since they didn’t carry ich x for freshwater fish. We noticed in improvement in the beginning but over the weekend we noticed that after 4 days of treatment and following the instructions on the bottle, our baby has been declining recently. Now it’s exploded all over him and he won’t eat and has been hiding and lying on his side ( which I have never noticed ). Treatment said that it could take up to a month but we’re not noticing a change. Any advice pls? I really don’t wanna lose my baby :((

My fish decided he didn't like my new plants and did some re-scaping. So very helpful

Are my nitrates good?

This is my first time using test strips and I'm just really confused on the guide and everything. My ammonia strip came back a clear zero which is great but I'm really confused on the nitrates here. This is a tank that I've had for a long time (about a year or so) and this is really my first couple of experiences with these strips (yes, I know I should've used them sooner. I really regret not doing so). I want to be certain that they're good while my fish is acclimating at the moment. I'm really sorry about the camera quality it got kinda blurry

Please help

I’ve been battling this sickness for weeks
I’ve lost all 4 of my clown loaches
It’s not ick/epps
I’ve tried every treatment possible.
I have 15 tanks and I’ve never felt with anything I couldn’t fix but I’m at a loss on this.

Beginner-friendly stocking ideas for a 20gal long?

Recently, with the help of my LFS, I successfully started my first ever aquarium. I brought home Elizabeth (pic is of her second day in her new home) and have been talking about her at work nonstop, so a coworker gifted me his old 20 gallon tank and light. Im a scuba diver and so have been pretty obsessed with fish/wanting to have aquariums for a while, but was not expecting to have two so soon. Very good problem to have!

While my main focus is establishing a fish care routine and keeping my current girl happy, I would like to start building out a home tailored to a few beginner-friendly species. I’m in no rush and will be buying pieces of equipment probably over the next 3-6 months.

So far, I’m interested in corydoras and/or kuhli loaches as well as maybe some shrimp, but am open to other schooling fish or betta-friendly tank mates (not for Elizabeth, but I’d be open to having a second).

Let me know who your favorite fish have been or anything to avoid as a beginner. All I’ve done is made space in my bedroom for the tank/stand so I’m open to all suggestions.

Help - Electric blue ram sick

Hi all,

Managed to get my girlfriend into fishkeeping and we’ve had an electric blue ram for a year which she picked. We’ve recently moved the fish from a 40L to a 250L tank. All fine, all other fish fine. Today the ram is in the corner, heavy breathing with a large poop or something hanging out. I’m unsure if it’s constipation or some form of infection and want to act fast.

Only started today, heavy breathing, dark colouration

Can someone please help 😢 it’s breaking my heart

Fat Cory

Looked around on here for a bit before posting, but I’m curious. This lil fish is pretty active but I fed them brine shrimp a day ago and this guy now looks pregnant. I’m waiting a day or two before feeding him again because this roundness has me worried. It’s still very young as I raised it from fry.

I have the parents in another tank and they are almost two inches by now and round, but they are not Bruce the great white shark round.

Any suggestions? Worried for him.

how common are scammers when selling fish?

ok, i sell guppies locally. nothing crazy, just keeps my population low allows me to do cool projects and covers the care of basically all my fish. issue is tho, i had one customer twice. now, i keep EVERY fish i sell in a notebook with names, and i name each and every fish for this exact reason. the first time i sold this guy fish, he requested 6 plus a ton plants for 10$. i gave him 3 extras just in case, all was good i didnt receive any negative feedback. second time, i offered to do a swap for mystery snails instead of charging the 8$ for them since he said he had an infestation in his tank. i gave him 9 guppies and 20 lotus seedlings for it, he texted me after saying i shorted him both times but i dont know how thats possible because i literally wrote down each fish individually IN my notebook along with who there parents are and around what time they were born. i decided fighting it was more trouble then it was worth and im still new, so i gave him 4 more for free. im almost completely certain this was a scam, because i remember packing 6 the first time PLUS three extras and i remember packing 8 with one free extra the second time. how common is this? is it better to just give them free fish anyway to spare the trouble or fight them on it? i sell my guppies insanely cheap to, trio for 2$ 6 for 5$ and 8 for 7$ i mean if your buying acctualy really good fish for that price whats the point in being greedy about it?

Is my growth slow for a co2 tank?

I can't tell if the growth is normal or not (the first picture is today and the second picture was 19 days ago) because many say they have weekly trimming..

What to do with this Cardinal?

So my Cardinaltetra has been like this for at least 3 weeks. I isolated him/her and also did some treatment, no effect. Its seems like its also affecting its spine. She/he does still eat and doesn't show a lot of stress, interaction is also pretty normal. Do you guys think its in a lot of pain? I was thinking about euthanasia but I'm not sure.

A new beginning for r/Fishkeeping.

Hello fellow fishkeepers!

My name is Ackley14 and I have been selected to be the new moderator for this subreddit.

Firstly, I want to thank all of you for your efforts in reporting, and otherwise bringing attention to the horrific activities that have plagued this subreddit over the past few weeks. I was among those of you actively seeking out remedies and was ultimately chosen to lead this sub. I understand your concerns, I have been there with you seeing these atrocities and I will be doing my level best to not only act on future violations but prevent them outright however possible. In addition to that responsibility, I would love to help this community grow and thrive. Fishkeeping is an incredibly fun hobby, and I want this place to reflect that.

A little about me:
I have in my house 4 tanks presently. two 10 gallons (one's a shrimp and nano, the other is a betta tank) an 11 (another betta) and a 50 gal community with about 20 xray tetras, a mating pair of pearl gourami (hoping for some babies!) 6 black Venezuelan corys, and of course a smattering of small plecos (my favorite fish, in fact one pleco in that tank has survived a house move and several tank moves and is the fish we've had the longest). I also have 4 dogs (a mutt, a pom, a cav, and a Papillion).

I am going to take the next few days and get the lay of the land. in the mean time, I do intend on bringing on another mod or two so if you have any interest, please feel free to leave a comment and let me know.

And lastly, thank you all for your patience during this transition. I know it's been a rough few weeks but I assure you, I and the future mod team will be working hard to make this a place you all enjoy visiting.

Can this hold a 50 gallon aquarium?

Had this and was told it use to house a 50gal but I didn’t have the tank until now, and I’m just in need of some reassurance or to be told it’s not enough before I make any moves!

In Memory

Hello everyone. I'm posting as a member right now, not as a moderator.

As some of you may have known, I own an avatar betta, Tsu'nari. His name was inspired by the Na'vi language, and roughly translates to "Aquatic flame". I used to call him my Boy Named Tsu, lol.

This evening Tsu passed away after a long battle with antibiotic resistant fin rot and swim bladder infection. Truth be told, I saw this coming, but of course it hurts.

I want Tsu to be remembered as he was in life. He was a vibrant fish with a funny, fiesty personality. His eating habits took out $45 worth of shrimp in my desperate attempt to include them in his tank, lol. He would come up to the glass to greet me, and moved across states with me.

I'm thankful to have so many memories of him, and I am sharing some pictures as well. I will still be active as a moderator, but of course may be in the background for a bit while I grieve.

Tsu was and is dearly loved and missed. I hope there's a big ole betta pond in the afterlife I can meet him in someday.

What kind of fish are these?

Not the Zebra Danios, but other ones--silvery and blue/orange. The silver & blue/orange are male/female in a school, but not sure what kind of fish they are. Thank you!

First aquarium / aquascape: where do I start?

I’m thinking about getting my first aquarium. I’m mainly interested in the aquascaping side: some nice wood and rocks, lots of plants, and a natural-looking setup that’s interesting to look at. And ofcourse some fish. I have seen some of these on Youtube from MD Fish tanks and MJ aquascaping. I looking for something in that kind of style.

I’m thinking of a tank around 80 cm wide, so roughly 100-120 litres.

I’ve been reading quite a bit, but there’s honestly so much confusing information that I’m not sure what I actually need. So I have four main questions:

1. What should I use for the substrate?
I see everything from sand and gravel to soil and aquasoil. What do you actually need for a planted aquascape? And what’s genuinely useful versus mostly marketing?

2. What equipment do I actually need?
Filter/pump, heater, lighting, CO₂, etc. I had an aquarium as a kid and basically only remember having a pump. We definitely didn’t use CO₂, or lighting. Maybe we had a heater, but i am not sure about that. These days it seems like you need a whole collection of equipment just to get started. What would you consider essential for a first planted tank?

3. Does anyone know a good aquarium shop around Rotterdam, Netherlands?
I’d much rather visit a physical shop and talk to someone than order everything online. There doesn’t seem to be a Dutch aquarium subreddit, so I figured I’d ask here. Hopefully some Dutchy can recommend a shop.

4. What other advice would you give a complete beginner?
Especially things you wish you had known before setting up your first aquarium.

I’m not looking to build some crazy high-tech setup straight away. I’d rather keep it relatively simple, learn how everything works and go from there.

Thanks!

Catfish Emergency‼️

I have a two foot long tiger shovel nose red tail hybrid catfish and a week ago I noticed a big gash on his side, I’ve been doing 25% water changes every day but now he’s now sitting on the bottom of the tank and not very active, I have polyguard and serchem focus on hand and I’m transferring him into my 150 (my temporary hospital tank) with no decor and low flow to reduce stress. Any suggestions to help him??? I know it’s super risky to treat scaleless fish but he hasn’t been improving….
