Algae Issues

Algae Issues

We have all of this algae, seems to grow back even stronger and thicker after each time cleaning the tank. Do we need to start from scratch or is there a running solution? Pic is from about a week after a cleaning/water change.

Cloudiness

I have a 37gal tank for two goldfish. I have had them for about a month. Early on a treated the tank with blue ick tablets. Since then, the tank is perpetually blue/cloudy. I have drained half the tank and refilled 4x, changed the filter, tried Prime and water clarifier, and scrubbed the glass walls. I have pulled out all the fake plants and cleaned them. Picture of tank is today right after I drained half of it and refilled it.

How do I get the cloudiness to go away?

Rate my first ever tank! :D

I got a 60L fish tank in February and try to keep it as natural as possible. I know it’s not the prettiest and most perfect aquarium but I care for it as best as I can even if I don’t have a lot of time due to school work. There are more inhabitants like for example Amano shrimp, corydoras julii and otocinclus that you can’t see right now.

Stocking Advice/general advice

I’m needing advice stocking/general honest feedback with this 8 week cycled 90 gallon tank

I recently added some plants and am looking to get another filter.

I currently have
6 albino corrys
5 swordtails (2male-3 female)

Looking for suggestions on what I could add that would suit the current fish in the tank.

I currently have pea gravel with the fluvial substrate. I know it’s not the best for corys so I am considering moving them to a separate tank with sand.

I am also adding an air stone to the other side along with a second light.

Current temp 78F, all water parameters look good from what I’ve read.

125 Gallon freshwater stocking ideas

I’ve been keeping freshwater aquariums for about 5 years, but they’ve all been smaller tanks. I’m starting to plan my first 125-gallon and, before I settle on a stocking list, I’d love to hear what everyone else enjoys keeping in larger freshwater tanks. I tend to gravitate toward oddball fish or species with unique behaviors rather than fish that are just colorful. I’m not really a cichlid or Oscar guy, and while I do like bichirs and knifefish, I’m hoping to hear about some different ideas instead of those. If you had a 125-gallon freshwater tank, what would you stock it with and why? I’d love to discover some species I may have never considered.

Nitrogen cycle

My nitrogen cycle has been going for about a month. My ammonia levels drop from 2ppm to zero in about 24 hours. I have been using seed and a sponge filter I got from the store. The problem I’m having is my nitrites absurdly spiked. Is that normal? This reading is the day after I did a 75% water change. I know it may affect the nitrogen cycle but the bacteria should be mostly on surfaces and filters. Absolutely had to with the spike. Is this just a waiting game at this point? And should I be feeding ammonia in there as well while I wait for the nitrite bacteria to keep the ammonia colony healthy?

Please advise -I don't know what to do about fish (euthanise or wait)

I don't know if I should euthanise this fishy now or still wait...

Neon developed some discoloration on him a bit more than 2 weeks ago and now it did evolve a bit as the discoloration filled in a bit more. He swims, schools and eats normally. And this makes it harder for me to just euthanise the poor fish, hoping it is not NTD...

I don't have any other tank to be able to safely quarantine him.

I was thinking that at any new symptom or obvious worsening I will euthanise the fish so that it doesn't die in the tank, but I am afraid of it dying unexpectedly despite normal behavior.

Can i put shrimp and betta in a tank at the same time?

I lost my betta around 3 weeks ago? And i miss having one so much so i was thinking about getting another :( i already have shrimp in my tank but i also do want more shrimp, i know bettas are territorial but would i be okay to put shrimp in the tank just before the betta or should it be done on like completely separate days so the shrimp can like get used to the tank and then add the betta,,? I waited around a week before adding my betta to my tank after the shrimp before, but just wondering if i can do it all in one go

Which Canister Filter Is Best?

I’m looking at these four canisters, and not sure which would work best for me.

I currently have a cheap little canister for my 38 gallon tank, and it’s fine, but I’m looking at the ‘next tank’ upgrade options, maybe to use on my 200 gallon temporary pond/pool for the summer.
I am planning on upgrading from the 38 to a 100/120 gallon with African (Lake Malawi) Cichlids.

I’d like to get something that’s rated a little above the 100/120 gallon size, since it will be overstocked to avoid too much aggression 🤞but is the lower rating (600 or fx2) enough extra or should I be looking at the much bigger capacity canisters (850 or fx4)?

The OASE seems popular but is more expensive for less capacity, and the Fluval seems to also be a well used brand, a bit more affordable and claims higher gph rating. I do like the internal heater feature but it’s not a dealbreaker for me, and I also like the water change feature on the Fluval.

Canister cleaning is one of my less favorite maintenance chores, so whichever is easier to set up and maintain and “user friendly” is important.

Budget is “I’ll upgrade once I’ve saved up for what I want” so I’d rather spend less, but if it’s worth it to get the better product that’s okay.

OASE BioMaster 2 Thermo 600 Canister Filter
Built-in Heater
Up to 160 Gallons
~$380

OASE BioMaster 2 Thermo 850 Canister Filter
Built-in Heater
Up to 225 Gallons
~$430

Fluval FX2
Easy Water Change/No internal heater
Up to 175 gallons
~$270

Fluval FX4
Easy Water Change/No internal heater
Up to 250 gallons
~$310

Please help oh my god

I don’t know what happened. My parents were in charge of my fish tank while I was gone. I’m freaking out. I don’t know what could have happened. All the fish are infected with whatever the angelfish has. Red algae has spiked. There is waste everywhere. I’m in tears. How do I fix this. I just got home. I want to dose with kanaplex but I have a snail in there.

Fishless cycle - 16 days in, ammonia is dropping but I’ve never recorded any nitrite or nitrate

I’m cycling a heavily planted 39L freshwater tank and I’m a bit puzzled by what’s happening.

Tank:
- WIO 60-F Shallow (39L)
- Oase Filtosmart 60
- 50W heater at 24°C
- Twinstar 600E IV running 6 hours/day at 40%
- Dark sand over mesh bags of aquasoil
- Heavily planted (11 Tropica 1-2 Grow pots + Peace Lily) - these look very healthy and are growing well
- Redmoor wood and Seiryu stone

I’ve been fishless cycling with Dr Tim’s Ammonium Chloride since 19th June, testing almost every day with the API Master Test Kit.

Timeline:
- Started by dosing to ~1.5-2 ppm ammonia.
Had a bacterial bloom within the first couple of days which lasted about a week and has now totally cleared
- Biofilm developed on the wood
- Ammonia initially disappeared very quickly over 24 hours, which I assumed was mostly the plants
- Since then, ammonia processing slowed down
- On 2nd July I dosed 35 ml of Tetra SafeStart directly into the filter to try get the nitrifying bacteria to get going and dosed ammonium chloride to 2ppm
- Current readings over the last three days are roughly:
3 July: Ammonia ~1.5 ppm
4 July: Ammonia ~0.75 ppm
5 July: Ammonia ~0.5 ppm

Throughout the entire cycle I have never once measured:
- Nitrite above 0 ppm
- Nitrate above 0 ppm

I’ve confirmed the nitrate test procedure multiple times (shaking the bottles and tube very thoroughly etc.).

Water parameters:
- pH around 7.2-7.4
- KH ~4 dKH
- GH ~6 dGH
- Temperature 24°C

My questions are:
- Has anyone seen a planted tank cycle like this where nitrite and nitrate never become detectable?
- Could the plants realistically be taking up enough ammonium that I’m barely seeing nitrification?
- Could the bacteria simply still be establishing in the filter despite 16 days passing?
- Is there anything obvious I’m overlooking?
- If I allow ammonia to drop to 0, could I add some cherry shrimp safely in about a week?

I’m mainly trying to work out whether this is just an unusually plant-heavy cycle that needs more time, or whether something genuinely isn’t right. Any opinions or similar experiences would be appreciated.

100 Freshwater Fish cups

I started this project over a year ago with the intention of putting a spotlight on freshwater fishes. Most fish designs I see on pottery are trouts, salmons, and the like. But where are the colorful tetras, Amazonian cichlids, Australian blue eyed rainbows, wild bettas, Cory cats, Apisto cichlids, and everything else in between? There are so many colorful and wonderfully whimsical freshwater fish out there so I set out to create 100 porcelain cups and hand-painted 100 different species of freshwater fish on them.

I am now showing them at my Studio’s gallery in San Francisco (SMAart gallery and studio in the Mission). It took me over a year to finish this work, since pottery is just a passion hobby of mine and I’m soooo proud to finally have em all in display.

Many cups were already sold and went into their new homes when I took these pics, so forgive me if you counted the cups in the pic and don’t see all 100.

Anyway, thank you for allowing me to share my joy and work with yall here. 🥹
