How to deal with Detritus?

Hi, I’m semi-new to the hobby and my tank is almost always overrun with it. All I have stocked is one betta and 2 pumpkin nerite snails. Almost always, the floor of my tank is covered with detritus. While I try to siphon every week to deal with it, it always comes back one way or another. I don’t know what to do anymore, my plants are struggling to grow because of it, and I’m scared my betta is going to be affected. If this helps, I have a 5 Gal with a HOB filter, currently with a basic filter cartridge and ceramic rings. Please help me; this is the most frustrating thing about my tank and it’s so annoying.

Tetra - Swollen belly and white stuff attached

I obtained this tank for my grandparents four months ago and one of the tetras has had a very swollen belly. The other ones seem to be fine and the toucher was still eating and swimming normally so I wasn’t concerned. I came home today and now there’s something hanging out out of the fish and I don’t know what to do to help it. It’s hanging by the bottom and it’s not by the other ones.

My fish decided he didn't like my new plants and did some re-scaping. So very helpful

Shrimp mass die off

Tw: last photos are dead shrimp

I've had a 10 gal for running over a year with cherry shrimp, a school of pygmy cories, and some neon blue rasboras (sundanio axelrodi). Over the past maybe 3 days? I've lost all of my shrimp except 2 of them, which I've since moved to my rejects tank, where all the shrimp have been doing fine.

I probably had 50-100 shrimp, most of which were all bred and born in there, that are now all gone (the snails and scuds have made quick work of them fortunately/unfortunately). I moved 3 weeks ago with no problems and topped off the water recently with one gallon of RO water.

I don't have much tank maintenance since it's heavily planted (fertilized with root tabs), and besides the heater and filter (aqua clear 20) it's been pretty self sustaining. I clean the filter every other month or so, and I top off the water every 2-3 weeks (either ro, or a mix of ro and conditioned tap).

My water parameters have been stable with no nitrites, nitrates, or ammonia since it was initially cycled. Ph has never been below 7.0 and never above 8.2 (gradually lowered with adding tannins). GH is 9 and KH is 5 (previously has been closer to 7/8). There hasn't been any chemicals, cleaning, or something that got into the tank as far as I know.

Does anyone have any idea what could've happened?

New to this-Need Advice

Hi. I’m planning on getting a fish soon and a 5 gallon tank. I won’t be able to purchase things online, so can you tell me some things at Petco and PetSmart that would be okay for a Betta fish? I would also like to know if I can add a snail and some shrimp as well!

fish cancer????

please read the whole post!

Hey yall! Ive had this rosy red minnow for about two years now (got him as a feeder fish from petsmart, life expectancy was like a week if that) and he’s also had some weird quirks i’ve attributed to poor breeding and genetics. This is where he got his name, Stupid Fish, because he is very stupid (digging in rocks, refusing to school, swimming vertical circles, digging up plants, splashing me while i sleep, etc). Today I noticed a lump on him and went back through photos and he’s had it at least since august 10th. I did recently move my aquarium back with me to college, and i had to do a 100% water change due to an issue i had with WSSV and my crayfish. I also got new plants, and two new platties (all properly quarantined). with the big changes i was concerned this was a stress thing, but august 10th is BEFORE any of these changes. I’ve also been heavily monitoring water levels and quality due to these changes, and they have been excellent and stable.

he doesn’t have symptoms of dropsy, ich, or swim bladder issues and i’m very concerned this could be a tumor/cyst or like cancer.

i wanted to go to reddit first, but in the mean time because i am on a college campus for an R1 research university, i will be asking our bio department for any fish experts or grad students to help me.

pictures attached, it appears to have started small as one lump and is now larger and looking like 2 close together

Cory distribution system?

Wwyd? I ordered some cardinal tetras online and when they arrived I noticed a +1. Im pretty sure its a hastatus corydora, but if not then its a pygmy corydora. There was minimal colouration to go off. So once it settles in and colours up i'll know for sure.

But my question is ~ is this corydora distribution at work? Technically, itd be fine in the community tank, but hastatus corys werent on my list of tank mates.

currently running with

7 sterbai corydoras

6 khuli loaches

6 glass catfish

amano, caradina and neocaradina shrimp

6 rummy nose tetras

6 cardinal tetras

12 ember tetras

5 emerald rasboras

8 galaxy rasboras

the lone soldier bumble bee goby

3 ottocinclus

The tank is a 240L, planted tank with cO2.

Can it exist alongside these species? or do I need to purchase a schools worth.

Controversial Opinion: stop recommending livestock to deal with temporary tank issues.

It really feels like every time someone posts about stuff like algae, snail problems, etc there's always replies like buy otos, buy amanos, buy pea puffers.

  1. These are all treating the symptoms, not the cause. Algae: balance your water parameters 2. Snails stop overfeeding etc

These are all probably new aquarists, with potentially unstable tanks, and inexperience in husbandry. Why are we recommending livestock that they will now be obligated to care for especially with things like pea puffers and otos that require some degree of care, research and setup for them to thrive.

HELP ME!!! 🐌

Hundreds of these small tiny snails live in my substrate and seem to come out at night , how do I get rid of them / solve the problem. Is there any fish that eat an abundance of snails and are also larger in size? This is a 75g with a bichir , koi swordtails ,Yoyo loach, pictus catfish and some others.

EDIT : when I first noticed a lot of them I switched to feeding my fish once a day to every other day & they still seem to be a large problem

WHO IS THIS???? HELP??

Okay, I really need you to read this first before any of you clown on me

10 gallon tank, live plants, shrimp, mystery snails, bladder snails, ramshorn snails, and dwarf rasbora

We USED to have a betta, a female plakat named Circe. Unfortunately, the moment we dropped her into the tank she saw the shrimp as an all you-can-eat buffet. After making a lovely bubble nest, she promptly died.

Time of death: 07/05/26 ~22:30 EST in a hospital cup.

Exactly one week later THIS materializes. The photos that have been posted are from today. It looked liked a garden variety fry at first so we assumed it was a rasbora.

But now it's been 5 weeks, and it doesn't match the way a dwarf rasbora fry would develop. And my wife and I are desperately trying to figure out what kind of fry this is, and we are REALLY hoping it's not somehow a singular betta???? Like I mean it would be kinda cool if it was but if it is what the hell do we do??

Is this 20 gal suitable for 3 honey gouramis?

If I add floating plants in the front left corner of this 9 month old 20 gal tank, would it be suitable for adding 3 honey gouramis? I currently have 6 rummy nose tetras and 6 glowlight tetras.

Pleco Trouble

Hey all! I've been lurking for a bit but never posted. My husband and I just got our 29 gallon tank going, and we've been trying the slow and steady method of getting the water just right, planting plants, rechecking the water and we finally got it balanced after about five weeks. We introduced 6 shrimp, 1 mystery snail and a bristle-nose plecostamous. We've had them for four days. We lost a shrimp yesterday, but we heard that that's relatively common. Unfortunately we lost our pleco today and we cannot figure out what we got wrong. We checked all the balances, and everything is still great. We've fed them a few pellets morning and night. I know this is a shot in the dark, but does anyone have any ideas? We care about our fish and want to keep them healthy and happy, but we're clearly missing something in our parameters.
