Pacing an overnight travel day with two young kids: Our 3 AM airport run, All-Star resort check-in, & "no-park" arrival strategy

Sharing our arrival-day strategy from a 12-day trip down to Florida with our two young daughters. Traveling from NJ with young kids meant managing sleep schedules and avoiding immediate burnout.

3 AM Departure & Airport Parking Logistics

  • The Flight Setup: We had an early morning flight out of PHL, which meant leaving home in the middle of the night.
  • Off-Site Parking Shuttle: We pre-booked off-site airport parking ($113.35 for 12 days). The shuttle picked us up directly at our car spot, loaded our bags/strollers, and dropped us right at the terminal curb. Not having to walk across a cold garage at 3 AM with sleepy kids was worth every penny.

Pre-Trip Anticipation Building

  • Movie Watchlist Routine: A few weeks prior, we watched movies tied to our destination (Toy Story, Avatar, Star Wars, Frozen). It gave the kids recognizable anchors and built excitement long before we boarded the plane.

The "No-Park" Arrival Day Strategy

  • Avoiding Ticket Burnout: Instead of buying park tickets on arrival day when everyone was running on low sleep, we dedicated the afternoon to a low-stakes "transportation rehearsal."
  • Transit as an Attraction: We rode the resort buses and completed the Monorail loop. To young kids, the Monorail and themed resort structures (giant guitars, surfboards) felt like an amusement park on their own—with zero longlines or pressure.

Questions for Parents:

  1. How do you handle middle-of-the-night airport departures with young kids?
  2. Do you schedule "rest/reset" days on arrival, or go straight into activities?

First WDW Trip Recap (Part 1/12): PHL Airport Parking, All-Star Music, & Monorail "Rehearsal Day"

Sharing Part 1 of our family's 12-day Florida trip recap (8 days at Walt Disney World across all four parks, 2 days at Kennedy Space Center, plus travel days). We flew down from Philadelphia (PHL) with our two young daughters for an 8-night stay at All-Star Music Resort.

Pre-Trip Preparation

  • Movie Watchlist: Before leaving, we set up a movie lineup (Toy Story, Avatar, Star Wars, Frozen, and Seven Dwarfs) so the kids were familiar with the characters and lands. It built tremendous anticipation at home.

Airport & Parking Logistics

  • Overnight Drive: Left home in New Jersey in the middle of the night to reach Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) for an early flight.
  • Pre-Booked Off-Site Parking: Cost $113.35 for ~12 days. The shuttle van picked us up directly at our car spot and dropped us right at the terminal, making a 3 AM departure effortless with young kids.

Resort Impressions (All-Star Music)

  • Personalized Check-In: A Cast Member sat down with us at a table to explain bus routes, resort maps, and park strategy rather than doing a quick counter handoff.
  • Resort Exploration: The oversized themed icons (guitars, giant Coca-Cola cup, surfboards) gave the kids an instant playground experience without needing a park ticket on Day 1.

Arrival Day "Transportation Rehearsal"

  • Low-Pressure Pacing: Instead of burning park tickets while tired, we spent the afternoon riding complimentary Disney buses and completing the Resort Monorail loop.
  • Transit Practice: Testing connections beforehand gave us clear travel times and confidence before our early Magic Kingdom start the next morning.

If you'd like to see the full photo recap and write-up, check out Disney World 2024 Day 1: The Night Drive and Our First Resort Day.

Questions for the Community:

  1. What is your go-to arrival day routine before starting park days?
  2. Do you prefer exploring resort transit or heading straight to Disney Springs on Day 1?

Recapping our off-season VB trip: dolphins from the hotel, quiet Back Bay, and timing the CBBT tunnel right as a cargo ship passed overhead

We spent Presidents' Day weekend in Virginia Beach coming down from NJ. It was our first time visiting during the winter, and experiencing the oceanfront without the summer crowds made for a great trip.

A few highlights that stood out to us:

  • The CBBT Ship Crossover: On the way home, our drive into the Thimble Shoal tunnel timed out perfectly with a massive, fully loaded container ship passing through the channel directly above us.
  • Dolphins off the Boardwalk: Waking up on Sunday morning to spot dolphin fins right off our hotel balcony near 24th Street.
  • Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge: Walking the temporary roll-out dune mat down to an entirely empty beach was one of the peaceful moments of the trip.
  • Roadside Surprises: Spotting the huge Hugh Mongous gorilla statue outside Ocean Breeze Waterpark gave us a good laugh, and we lost count of how many Sunsations we passed along Atlantic Ave!
  • Local Food: Loved our lunch stop at Gino’s Pizzeria by Maurizio after spending a rainy morning at the arcade.

I wrote up the full photo story covering our trip over on The Beautiful USA's Virginia Beach travel journal.

What are your favorite spots around Virginia Beach or Back Bay to visit during the winter months?

Exploring the Delaware River bridges from the New Jersey side: Benjamin Franklin & Walt Whitman Bridge viewpoints

While spending four days exploring South Jersey and Philadelphia, the massive suspension bridges spanning the Delaware River ended up becoming a major highlight of our trip rather than just something we crossed.

A few favorite perspectives we found along the riverfront:

  • Benjamin Franklin Bridge (Camden Waterfront): Standing directly beneath the steel structure near the Camden shoreline gives an awesome view of the cables and deck carrying both road traffic and trains across to the Philly skyline.
  • Walt Whitman Bridge (Proprietors Park, Gloucester City): A quiet early morning spot to watch cargo vessels move along the shipping channel right under the bridge span.

I put together a photo journal covering these bridge viewpoints and our full route over on The Beautiful USA's South Jersey & Philadelphia journal.

What are your favorite vantage points along the Delaware River for photographing the Ben Franklin Bridge?

A November day around Cape May: Sunset Beach, SS Atlantus, and discovering the County Zoo by accident

During a short South Jersey road trip with family, we spent a day driving down to Cape May and exploring the southern tip.

A few highlights that stood out to us:

  • Cape May Lighthouse & Beach: After climbing Absecon Lighthouse the day before, we opted to skip the climb here and just spend time on the beach. Having a broad, quiet beach almost entirely to ourselves in November was a highlight.
  • Sunset Beach & SS Atlantus: Sitting by the shore and spotting the concrete hull of the SS Atlantus above the water made for a really unique roadside stop.
  • Cape May County Park & Zoo: We stumbled onto this on the map while heading north and didn't expect much, but it blew us away. Free admission and parking, yet full of bison, giraffes, capybaras, and peacocks. It turned into one of our favorite stops of the trip.

I wrote a complete travel note with photos covering our route over on The Beautiful USA's South Jersey travel journal.

For locals or frequent visitors: What are your favorite quiet-season spots around Cape May County that most first-timers miss?

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (17.6 miles) — timed our underground tunnel crossing just as a loaded container ship passed overhead!

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel stretches 17.6 miles from shore to shore across the mouth of the bay.

Because the route crosses major naval and commercial shipping channels, two 1-mile tunnels were built beneath artificial islands so ships can pass above while cars drive below.

On our return trip across the bay, the timing lined up perfectly—a fully loaded container ship reached the shipping channel right as we descended into the tunnel!

Walkway Over the Hudson — The 1889 Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge converted into a 1.28-mile elevated pedestrian walkway (212 ft above the river)

My wife and I visited the Walkway Over the Hudson during the first active snowfall of the season. Originally built in 1889 for rail traffic, it was converted into a pedestrian bridge in 2009. The view looking down at the Hudson River and the Mid-Hudson Bridge during a snowfall was incredible.
