After violence and crowds, Virginia Beach mayor establishes safety task force

Mayor Bobby Dyer on Tuesday announced a task force to examine public safety issues that have bedeviled the city and hurt its image as a tourist destination.

The Mayor’s Task Force for a Safer Virginia Beach will hold meetings and community listening sessions and deliver recommendations in October.

The group could come up with ways to help deal with crowds and violence, which were prominent this spring after shootings in the resort area led to emergency curfews.

So who has the magic switch that causes gas prices to rise 25 cents every week or so?

Yes, I am using my app to scout the best gas price deals, but DAMN. Every other station is jumping from 4.34 to 4.59. This is not natural and we👏simply👏do👏not👏 have👏 to 👏 live 👏 like 👏 this!

Planning Commission wants Virginia Beach to prepare for data centers

On May 6, Virginia Beach Planning Commission Chairperson John Coston wrote to council that data centers are not specified in the city’s zoning ordinance and are allowed in industrial districts.

Using conditional use permits, as suggested in the letter, could give the commission a chance to weigh in on applications and make recommendations to council.

Wawa off Ferrell

What’s up with the pumps at Wawa off Ferrell PKWY? Are they running out? The stream feels SO weak when pumping and it’s super slow.. At first I thought it was just the one I was at until I went back a week later.

Virginia Beach Oceanfront could soon get another parking garage

Plans for a new public parking garage near the convention center are coming closer to reality.

After reviewing submissions from a request for proposals last year, the city’s preferred developer is The Runnymede Corp. Virginia Beach would contribute roughly $38 million toward the project, said Emily Archer, acting director of economic development.

The total cost to build the garage is still to be determined, but the proposed concept was discussed at a City Council meeting Tuesday. Located at the southeast corner of 19th Street and Parks Avenue, the garage plans include more than 1,000 parking spaces and two stories of retail with potential for a sports bar, restaurant and coffee shop.

Affordable day care

Starting to look into day care but obviously no one has tuition prices listed. What is your general experience where you go and maybe base pricing you’ve paid/been shown? Looking into new job opportunities, but it wouldn’t be worth it if the day care costs as much as or more than I’ll be making.

ETA they’re 2.5 and 4. And it’d be daily from about 730-1

Part time/Half time daycare

Does anyone do it??? I’m just looking for 1-2 days a week so that my kids can socialize, get some separated learning and I can get some housework done for once.

My kids are two and four.

Edit: asking for names of daycares. I’ve already called several and toured two. So far all of them are only offering full time because they have waitlists of parents looking that need and will pay for that.

New policy aims to limit Chromebook use for younger students in Virginia Beach

“We did get parent feedback from the survey, and even with how leading that survey was, many parents recognized they would prefer a classroom environment with as little Chromebook use as possible,” Brown said.

Is oceanfront worth the premium in virginia beach or are you basically just paying for the view

Planning a week out here with my partner and every oceanfront property is like 40-60% more expensive than something two blocks back. We're debating whether the price difference actually changes the experience or if it's just a label that lets listings charge more. We're not the type to sit on the balcony all day, we'd probably be out most of the time anyway. Curious what people who've done both actually think. Is the walkability that much better, or is the whole "oceanfront" thing mostly marketing at this point?

Men’s Tailor

Anyone have a good recommendation for a tailor that can do men’s suits and dress shirts? Seems like all I can find is someone who can do hemming.

Gemini's Roast of VB

Saw this on Nextdoor and absolutely couldn't resist sharing. It's actually way too funny to be on that app 😂

Virginia Beach: the only place where you can experience the thrill of a military jet shattering your eardrums while you're stuck in traffic behind a Nissan Altima doing 45 mph in the left lane of I-264.

If you’ve ever wanted to visit a beach city that feels like it was designed by a committee of strip-mall developers and retired Admirals, VB is your paradise. Here is a little breakdown of what makes it so uniquely frustrating:

### The "Oceanfront" vs. Reality

You have the Oceanfront, which is basically just a 40-block tourist trap fueled by the smell of cheap sunscreen, funnel cakes, and regret. It’s where people from out of town go to buy a "Virginia is for Lovers" t-shirt and dodge teenagers on electronic rental bikes.

But if you actually *live* there? You avoid the Oceanfront like the plague between May and September and pretend Chic's Beach is an exclusive, hidden oasis—even though you’re still just sitting in the sand looking at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

### The Town Center Paradox

Because the actual beachfront is a chaotic mess, the city decided to build a "downtown" from scratch a few miles inland. Enter Town Center: a hyper-sanitized, artificial cluster of chain restaurants and luxury apartments where people dress up like they're in Manhattan just to go to P.F. Chang's. It has all the organic charm of a freshly printed receipt.

### The True Local Culture

* **The Jet Noise:** Locals call it "The Sound of Freedom." Everyone else calls it "I can't hear my own thoughts because an F/A-18 just buzzed my roof at 2:00 PM on a Tuesday."

* **The Roads:** Northampton Boulevard and Indian River Road are less like thoroughfares and more like real-life games of *Frogger*, except the frogs are driving lifted pickup trucks with pristine, never-used truck beds.

* **The "Seven Cities" Identity Crisis:** Nobody actually knows where Virginia Beach ends and Norfolk or Chesapeake begins, but everyone will aggressively defend their specific suburb as if it has a rich, distinct cultural heritage.

Ultimately, Virginia Beach is a city that wants to be Miami, acts like a small military town, and is geographically mostly just a giant swamp with a really long boardwalk. But hey, at least the orange crushes are good.
