Pocket Prairie “Starter Pots”

Saw this circulating recently and thought it was a neat idea to get more folks to get started with natives in their yard. People pick up the “starter pot” and plant it in their yard.

Madden 2005 LB to DE franchise mode “hack”

Anyone else do this? I’m just having fun with Franchise Mode after recently buying a PS2. Madden 05 on PS2 was one of my favorites as a kid.

Maybe this applies to other years/versions of Madden too, but I’ve found when you convert a LB to DE it instantly increases their overall significantly, like even 10 points or more. And then they progress quite well usually. So I’ll sign a low-70s or high-60s LB, convert them to DE which makes them high 70s or low 80s and then either keep them or trade them.

Bush Honeysuckle officially a noxious weed in Kansas!

Beginning in May 2026, updates to the Kansas Noxious Weed List will take effect following an extensive process led by the Kansas Department of Agriculture. The changes update weed designations and control methods, impacting landowners, county governments and others responsible for managing land across the state.

The updates include revisions to the official list of noxious weeds and their classifications. Changes include the removal of pignut from the list and the addition of several species across three categories: spotted knapweed and diffuse knapweed have been added as Category A noxious weeds; common teasel and cutleaf teasel have been added as Category B noxious weeds; and Amur honeysuckle has been added as a Category C noxious weed.

https://www.agriculture.ks.gov/Home/Components/News/News/663/17

Bush honeysuckles will invade a wide variety of natural communities with or without previous disturbances. Affected natural communities can include: lake and stream banks, marsh, fens, sedge meadow, wet and dry prairies, savannas, floodplain and upland forests and woodlands.

Because bush honeysuckles form a thick understory, they limit how much sunlight reaches the seedlings of native plants and thus inhibit the growth of new plants. They also compete with native plants for moisture and nutrients in the soil. All bush honeysuckles spread from the roots, allowing them to further dominate an area.

Overland Park mayor to file for governor Monday, sources say

Overland Park Mayor Curt Skoog is planning to file to run for governor as a Democrat on Monday, potentially shaking up a Democratic primary that’s been dominated by two major candidates so far.

https://sunflowerstatejournal.com/overland-park-mayor-to-file-for-governor-tuesday-sources-say/

The Corson campaign issued a statement in response to the possibility that Skoog would file on Monday.
“This campaign is built on a simple belief: Kansans deserve a leader who listens, works hard, and brings people together to get results,” spokesperson Glynnis Harvey said in an email.
“Over the past ten months, Ethan’s traveled across the state, meeting with communities large and small and building a movement for a new generation of leadership.
“He’s earned the endorsements of trusted Kansas leaders such Governor Kelly, Planned Parenthood, and labor.
“As governor, Ethan will protect abortion rights, stand up to ICE, and fight back against Trump or anyone who threatens our freedoms.
“With Republicans now rallying around Ty Masterson after Trump’s endorsement, Ethan is the only candidate in this race who can defeat the divisive, hate-filled, and ineffective MAGA agenda coming to Kansas.”
Holscher’s campaign also responded to a Skoog candidacy.
“Cindy Holscher is the only candidate in this race on either side of the aisle who has a track record of taking on corporate interests and fighting for ordinary Kansans,” said campaign manager Madi Ashcraft.
“She’s also the only Democrat in the race who has flipped red areas, and the only Democrat running who took on Sam Brownback and won,” Ashcraft said in an email.
“Cindy is building a grassroots campaign that excites voters and will defeat Ty Masterson in the fall. Kansans aren’t looking for another establishment guy in the race — they already have enough of those.”

Where is the best Penicillin cocktail in town?

The Penicillin is a modern classic cocktail created by Sam Ross, featuring blended Scotch, lemon juice, and a honey-ginger syrup, topped with a float of smoky Islay Scotch for a medicinal, cold-remedy feel. Its name comes from the antibiotic, as its ingredients (honey, ginger, lemon) have traditional health associations, though it's not a real cure. The drink is known for its balance of sweet, sour, and smoky flavors, and is often garnished with candied ginger or a lemon peel.

Anyone converted their lawn to Buffalograss?

I’m in-process. Seeing if there are any comrades out there.

A neat method I’ve learned about is from the Dyck Arboretum of the Plains: https://dyckarboretum.org/final-update-buffalograss-experiment/

From the Dyck Arboretum experiment:

“We had our area prepared and ready for planting. That November, we seeded the area with annual ryegrass and buffalograss seed. The ryegrass is a cool season grass that prefers cooler weather. Once it germinated, it held the soil through the winter while the buffalograss seed naturally planted itself with the freezing and thawing of the soil. The round buffalograss seeds did not germinate because soil temperatures were below 60 degrees.”
