Have you ever been discriminated against by an employer?

Hi!

I have cerebral palsy and was a software engineer until I was laid off in January. I heard people with disabilities experience layoffs at a higher rate than average. What has your experience been? I'm thirty and have been laid off at least three times. It's hard to believe my disability had absolutely nothing to do with that considering there are people who go their entire careers without being laid off more than once.

I severely stutter on top of having tight legs, so finding work can be a challenge. I'm applying to jobs daily, but twice in the past month when I asked a recruiter for a speech accommodation for a disability I cannot hide, I was ghosted both times. Coincidence? Maybe. I also applied to a dishwashing job and was told that I could not work there because of my legs, even though I've washed dishes elsewhere.

There really are people who see past it. I know that. But I'm discouraged in the meantime.

Does anyone else have experiences like these?

Organizations That Help Disabled People Quickly Find Work (Ventura County, CA)

Does anyone know of organizations that help disabled people quickly get back to work?

I was laid off from my software job in January. I applied to the Department of Rehabilitation (the Ventura county office) in February. I was accepted, but DOR is notoriously slow. I wait weeks for responses to emails. At this rate, I will be out of savings and unemployment before I receive tangible employment help from them.

I have been applying daily on my own but with limited success. I feel that my speech disability impedes recruiter screenings as well as interviews, so I am looking for help finding employers that are open to hiring those with disabilities. If anyone knows of organizations that are generally quicker than DOR, I would love to know about them.
