Smearing on Late 100hz TV

Should be a simple one but I’m struggling. Trying to play composite PS2 on a late model Toshiba 36ZP38B 100hz and can’t seem to stop it smearing as it runs. I know late flatscreen CRTs don’t have the greatest game reputation but it is period correct for the console. I don’t remember having this issue until cheap LCD panels.

Under picture mode I’ve turned off DNR and it seems least on scan mode 100hz (not progressive, natural or active).

Is there some piece of magic I’m missing, were they always like this and I’ve forgotten, or do I need to recap as my searches suggest this might be the cause.

(If a recap, is there anywhere left in the Uk as I proved I’m not the man for the job by spectacularly killing a GameGear a few years back by trying to install a kit. I’ve also made it this far without the death, I’d like to make it to the next place without the death)

Finally got my game room together

Been collecting since (arguably) the mid 90s but it’s been growing in boxes for the past 15yrs or so. We moved house and one of the things I really wanted was a game room. I’m very fortunate that I’ve got one and been able to do this. I will say that I’m a player-grade collector and don’t want to be a box-custodian (I can’t ruin a box if I don’t have it), although I do have a stack of boxes for consoles in a cupboard. Before looking, know that I love protecting the weird, the unloved and the lower-end experiences. I skew towards racing/flying games and don’t enjoy RPGs, hence why they’re all missing!

I built the unit myself. It’s ~3.1m wide and each location was juggled to be about as narrow as possible and keep low. There’s space behind but I wasn’t too bothered about fully hiding wires, although I did run some horizontal trunking for video. Some of the consoles have pull out shelves but most are ok without. The LED strip is RGBWW with controller on top - I always wanted that style for it.

Technically, I used to do broadcast audio so am handy with wires. The switching units are Extron, ex-broadcast grade kit often used for high-end presentations and stage events. It’s not wanted now so is relatively cheap and obtainable. That said, I can’t find another 12-input composite so if you have one, I’d be interested! I personally love the jumper locations on the front panel for easy G-Con hookup as it just makes it that little easier to get something out and use it.

I’m not a fan of modifying consoles (barring the odd exception) so most is composite, with a bit of component and where it’s scart, converting to component. The idea was to have a TV that suited the era of the consoles, hence the left TV is for PS2/Wii era and the top TV for PS3/Wii-U/onwards. I aimed to have any console visible on any TV but am almost there. I know it’s not to everyone’s taste but I’m happier experiencing video “as it was”, not chasing the dragon on an ever decreasing return of picture quality. The right is a 36’’ late 100hz Toshiba flat-CRT with native component bought from the house clearance of an ex-CRT repairman’s mum, the top is a ~2015 era 4K Samsung and the right was ex-courtroom 28’’(?) Panasonic late 4:3 with low hours on a lazy-Susan so it spins a little.

One of the PS1 is SD-converted, partially for ease of link-cable games and partially to play a few patched-video Japanese games like Jet de Go and Initial D. Both PS2 have HDD adaptors but again, only for iLink/Netplay and a few Japanese games. The VideoPac (Magnavox Odyssey 2 for non PAL region) is SCART modified. The Master System is AV modified. I’m missing a GameCube (with an old guest in that location) but I missed it in-period so am not so bothered yet, an can play Donkey Konga on a Wii anyway. The PS5 is disc only (because I was offered it at an insane deal) but only exists for Gran Turismo and the Switch is my daughter’s. I’m debating modifying the Famicom (already modified to AV out) with socketed controllers as it’s not much use with the controllers at that length. The SNES has a Super MagiCom in it and a Bung64 is on my eventual to-buy list - more for ‘weirdness’ than use.

Shelving isn’t final yet. I’m going to sort a 3D printer so I can rack the SNES/N64 and loose Megadrive carts. My Gameboy/GameGear games are away until this is done, as are my PS1 memory cards. I’d like the cassettes for the C64 to be better located than in a shoebox so will do that at the same time.

Still to do: fit the link cable (ordered) for the PS2s; finish the wiring to split the inputs for the right TV: replace the scart-component converter on the VideoPac; replace the component-scart converter on the right TV; clean some paint off the floor; put up a few more controller bins; route component (duplicate right TV) to top TV; replace the sofa with something less awful; and sort 3D printed holders for stuff.

Can’t wait to get people round to enjoy it. Really can’t wait for link-cable Time Crisis 2!

PS1 Translation Patches

I’ve had a good look and can’t seem to find any PS1 translation patches for DDG. On top of that, the written guides I’ve found so far aren’t up to much. Is there a preferred guide or a patch someone can help me find?

I’ve already bought the controller, patched the graphics in the ROM to PAL (colour composite) and got started, but not got far.

I’d like to introduce my train-mad father in law to vintage gaming with my overscale setup and this seems like a great way!

Former employer trying to scam me - England

TL;dr - verbally told employment ended. Letter says different. Old employer now saying I can’t have another job until end of August and trying to keep salary.

On the last working day of May, I was called in to see the CEO with no warning at noon exactly. This was premeditated as my team had been removed from the office and letters pre-printed. This is part of a wider round in which HR and other similar roles have been decimated across the company.

I was advised that after 20mths of employment I was being let go due to financial issues at the company. The CEO apologised and stated I’d done a good job, gone above and beyond and delivered well, but they had to cut back. I am aware that under 2yrs there is no reason and did not fight.

I specifically asked “where do we go from here” and was told my employment ceased effective immediately and I no longer had to come to work. I was told I’d get a good reference, then asked to collect my belongings and leave, without talking to anyone, with which I complied.

I was surprised at the end of June to receive a single month of salary, and not the full payment as paid to colleagues.

Yesterday I started my new role, which I was very, very lucky to find at my level. I emailed my previous employer to put my remaining salary on emergency tax to balance my salary to the end of the year (dumb in hindsight). Their response was to reply today advising i was still employed and not allowed a second role. Either I end my employment with them immediately and receive no more pay, or start my new role after the end of employment (September).

I’ve had a reminder of the letter and been asked to confirm my choice today. The letter states my employment ends 28th Aug, and is in contradiction to the verbal message from the CEO. If it helps, the letter also states my line manager was in the meeting and she did not speak to me that day, nor was present?

FWIW the CEO is a trained lawyer with 9-figure resources, heavily involved in minutiae in the business and a personality that would see any resistance as a personal attack which I expect would be made as difficult as possible for me.

Do I have any options here or have I lost two months salary?

The five traps of Le Mans

The 24 Hours of Le Mans almost never reward the fastest car. "It's not you who chooses to win Le Mans, it's Le Mans who chooses you" the drivers like to repeat. On the 13.626 kilometers of the Circuit de la Sarthe, pure speed often ends up becoming secondary. What really matters is the ability to survive the night, traffic, temperature variations, neutralizations... and especially invisible technical traps that destroy races without warning.
In 2026, the challenge becomes even more brutal. The Hypercar category has never been so dense. Ferrari, Toyota, Cadillac, BMW, Alpine, Peugeot, Aston Martin and Genesis arrive with radically different philosophies, but the same obsession: to last 24 hours without breaking the fragile balance between performance and endurance.

1. Energy management: the permanent headache of Hypercars
Since the arrival of the Hypercar regulation, Le Mans has turned into a huge strategic chess game where every megajoule counts. Engineers constantly juggle between consumption, hybrid recovery and fuel autonomy. In the Hunaudières, the prototypes remain at full load for abnormally long periods of time for an endurance car. Result: the slightest error in engine mapping or hybrid management can cost an additional stop. And in Le Mans, a stop too many is often equivalent to a lost victory.
The equation becomes even more delicate with the evolution of Balance of Performance and the powers revised upwards since 2025. Some Hypercars are now flirting with the maximum allowed limits while trying to maintain a competitive autonomy. The problem is cruel: attacking too hard destroys the energy strategy; driving too carefully makes the rhythm necessary to stay in the leaders' turn disappear

2. Michelin tires: invisible wear that destroys a race
In Le Mans, wear and tear is not always visible. This is what makes the Sarthe particularly dangerous. A car can seem perfectly balanced for several relays before suddenly losing grip at dawn. The constraints suffered remain gigantic: more than 340 km/h in the Hunaudières, massive braking, fast compressions and extreme thermal differences between day and night.
The teams then live in a permanent compromise. Preserve gums or maintain an aggressive rhythm? Double the tire relays to save time at the pits or secure the car before nightfall? A perfectly adjusted Hypercar at 6 p.m. can become nervous at 3 a.m. without the engineers having really anticipated the phenomenon.
This is often when the races change. After twelve or fifteen hours of effort, operational errors begin to appear. Mechanics are tired. The pilots are losing lucidity in traffic. Strategies become more aggressive under pressure. Historically, it is precisely in this night window that Toyota, Porsche or Ferrari build their successes in Le Mans: not only thanks to speed, but thanks to their ability to remain stable when everyone begins to get disorganized

5. Reliability: the real judge of Le Mans
But despite all the modern technology, Le Mans always retains the same ultimate judge: reliability. The Hypercars 2026 have an immense technological density between hybrid systems, electronics, cooling, active aerodynamics, software and carbon brakes. The danger is that a tiny problem can become irreversible after several hours at full load.
A simple overheating can trigger a chain reaction: loss of performance, increased wear, excessive consumption, obligation to save... then abandonment several hours later. That's all the brutality of Le Mans. A dominant car over six hours can collapse after twenty hours of vibrations, traffic and thermal stress. That's why big teams still favor regularity over absolute performance.

Why does Le Mans remain unique?
This race does not forgive anything. It pushes every technical detail within its absolute limits and transforms the slightest weakness into a potential disaster. In 2026, with a Hypercar grid that is probably more competitive than ever, victory will not only be played over pure speed. It will be decided in energy control, in the understanding of tires, in the interpretation of the BoP, in the management of the night... and especially in the ability to avoid fatal error for twenty-four hours.
