Fun fact, there are black streaks on the underside of the rear wing from the tires flicking up pieces of rubber. I must have stared at this car for 30 minutes.
The entry list for the Suzuka 1000km, the next round of the IGTC, has sadly been unveiled, revealing a disappointing lack of Pro entries for BMW.
Instead, fans will have to settle for four BMW M4 GT3 EVOs fighting in the lower classes: the No. 5 Team Studie (Yamaguchi/Hirota/Ara), the No. 69 WRT (McIntosh/Thompson/Harper), and the No. 89 Team KRC (Ruan/Oosten/Hesse) are relegated to the Bronze category, while Team KRC’s second car, the No. 10 (Lee/Farfus/Tomasoni), is left isolated in Pro-Am.
On most circuits, the short-tailed 917 K’s handling characteristics would have seen it vanquish the long-tailed 917 L with ease. However, the unique nature of the high speed Le Mans circuit meant the Langheck, which was much quicker in a straight line, was able to more than recover any time lost in corners.
This disparity in lap times gave Porsche the idea to try and create a 917 that was as good through the corners as the Kurzheck, but able to match the Langheck for top speed. Management gave the green light to develop such a car a couple of weeks after the 1970 Le Mans race.
The result was the ugly duckling of the 917 family, the 917/20, which quickly became known as ‘The Pink Pig’.
