Let’s Try Of Blood & Clay! Part 3: Ruin

Last part of my little demonstration AP.

Fantastic rules-light iteration by the crunchlord himself. The game plays smoothly, with the right amount of structure and procedures for major actions and decisions while leaving room for emergent storytelling.

Let's Play The Outcast! Part 1: Overview and Setup

More Cezar Capacle goodness!

The Outcast is a rules light, narrative solo rpg about isolation, survival, mistakes, and redemption. We embody an ostracized traveler embarking on a lonely journey to rebuild their tarnished name.

Review: Runequest Without a Gamemaster

I might have gone a little too long with this one at 2400 words, but damn, it's such a fun supplement.

It leans into Runequest's complexity (from my outside perspective, at least) to give players a complete and satisfying solo experience, with plenty of crunch and narrative aids.

Even better, it doesn’t have to be exclusive to Runequest. The mechanics gel well with any other game.

There are many interesting and clever concepts to bring and adapt to your arsenal of solo resources.

Tome of the Pyromancer: Darkflame’s Grace Part 1

Starting an AP of Tome of the Pyromancer, an open-world Souslike focused on exploration, part of the Kerova-verse.

We play as a fledgling pyromancer journeying across fallen realm of Quelann, discovering new pyromancies, seeking lost knowledge, meeting powerful sages, and battling dangerous foes.

Let's Play Amarath (A Dragonbane sandbox): The Chaos Rebellion Parts 1 and 2

I've started a playthrough of Amarath, a sandbox supplement for Dragonbane.

Amarath is a realm where Chaos and madness threaten to consume all. An open-ended campaign with exploration tables, journey events, regional encounters, rumors, campaign hooks, faction play, and a living, unstable world plummeting toward oblivion unless the players intervene.

It's mainly inspired by Michael Moorcock’s works, like Stormbringer, but also classic sword & sorcery, creating a cool blend of its influences.

I'm also using the fantastic Just One Dragon and the Unfolding Machines.

Hope you enjoy it!

Troves 2e by Sasquatch Games - Review

A solo-first gem that doesn’t demand storytelling skills, heavy time commitments, or roleplaying experience. Random tables provide everything you need to have fun with it.

Combat and exploration are quick and easy, and progression is fun. No overload, extreme crunch, or excessive bookkeeping, just fast-paced adventure and treasure hunting illustrated by incredible art and charming presentation.

Triple-O Review: Characters’ decisions and interactions made easy (and fun!)

This 55-page toolkit by Cezar Capacle is easy to learn, fast to use, lightweight, doesn’t get in the way even if you’re constantly leaning into it, and, best of all, makes you understand and develop your characters.

Highly recommended!

Absolutely Awesome Fantasy Names and Names Generator

Hey, everyone! I’ve just published a free simple name generator for fantasy characters on Itch: the Absolutely Awesome Fantasy Names and Names Generator.

The tables are very simple: roll a d100 for First Names and Surnames. If you prefer a last name, roll a d8 + d66 twice on the Last Name Generator.

First Names are divided in male and female, but a lot of them are interchangeable and gender-neutral.

Surnames can also be first names. Most, if not all, are gender-neutral.

When using the Last Name Generator, add or remove words and letters, change the word order, and alter in any other way you want. Roll for random names or choose specific columns and rows. If a name doesn’t work, try again. Create monikers and epithets if you prefer.

As an example, I rolled:

d100: 23 = Dante/Clare

d8 + 2d6: 8 + 5, 1 = CONCEPTS > Blood/Abyss

d8 + 2d6: 4 + 6, 4 = CREATURE > Feather/Eagle

I could go with the straightforward Bloodfeather or Bloodeagle. Maybe I’ll pick a last name + moniker, like Clare Feathers, Eagle of the Abyss, or “Abyssal” Dante Eaglefeather, or even Clare “The Eagle” Featherblood.

That’s it.

Look, I’ve been creating characters in TTRPGS and videogames for more than 30 years, so I know how important that 4-hour process is. This is meant to facilitate part of it. Some names won’t work, some are gonzo, and some are a little cringey, but they are all fun and fit well with fantasy games, at least according to my very objective opinion.

Have fun!

The One Ring 2e Solo: Hobbit Tales parts 2 and 3

Adventures 1 (A Conspiracy Most Cracked) and 2 (Expert Treasure Hunters) finished! Had a blast with these little guys.

And the more I use Triple-O, the more I love it. It’s fast, doesn’t break the flow, makes us dive into the characters traits and party dynamics, and it’s a clever way to resolve character vs player/gm knowledge. Highly recommended!

Hope you enjoy it.

The One Ring 2e Solo: Hobbit Tales Part 1

I got into the mood lately for some lighthearted adventures and decided for some low-stakes, hairy-footed solo adventures in the Shire with The One Ring 2e.

I'm using three pre-made characters and the new Triple-O zine to simulate some decisions. Hope you enjoy these hobbit tales.

Shinsei: a Nioh-inspired solo action TTRPG

A creative exercise gone a little off-rails.

Shinsei is my interpretation of what a Nioh-inspired, action looter solo rpg would look like. I had a lot of fun coming up with a few systems for it, and while it’s far, FAR from a playable state, I had to dump the thoughts and efforts that went into it so I can relax and put them to rest.

Lordsworn is a GMless narrative rpg for 1+ players meant for a single arc, inspired by Elden Ring and the light-souls genre. We control characters called Lordsworns, people who survived the Cataclysm, an apocalyptic war between gods, and are trying to get back home.

For this session, I set up the world and background, drew my Lordsworns, and wrote a short prologue tying it all together. Hope you enjoy it!
