This is not what I would call a review. Im not really praising or criticizing the film for what it does right or wrong. This is me gushing about a film I love
I love how the movie starts by showing the bond between Mario and Luigi. From gushing over their silly commercial (super show intro music was such a good decision) Mario defending Luigi from Spike, their team work while plumbing, how Luigi tries to console Mario after dinner and then accidental separation but the reassurance from Mario before they part ways. To me this was the most important relationship the movie needed to get right and they did. Also love the addition of their family which is something the games never did.
Next is the world. They captured the essence of the Mushroom Kingdom so perfectly. Toad town looks exactly how it should look like and I love how nothing is explained is simply just their world why are there floating blocks ? Cause that's how it is here, why are there teleporting pipes ? Cause that's how it is. The training course captures the essence of how an actual Mario level operates, Mario tries and fails again in again until eventually getting it all while eating Mushrooms he hates just to save his brother.
Peach is quite a bit different from her game counterpart however her leadership qualities are still very present. She calms the Toads down, goes on a journey to negotiate with the kongs, she also still has moments of kindness like her game version. She goes out of her way to train Mario even though they just met and she makes sure to reassure him after his failed attempts and later on about Luigi.
I love how petty Donkey is towards Mario and their fight was great it was faced passed, funny and the cat suit was a good addition. I love that the setting was surrounded by girders but in a dk island arena basically combining both of DKs origin game. The aftermath of Oeach being so in awe of Mario's determination was really sweet a nice touch to their developing friendship and again I love DK pettiness he and Mario act just like stupid kids towards eachother for the rest of the movie
I haven't talked about him yet but. Bowser is so perfect in this movie. He's threatening, hilarious a huge simp and insecure too. He has not met Mario at all but everything he hears about him makes him worried that he'll woo Peach somehow (W brother Luigi for stating Princesses would find him attractive if they have good taste).
The Mario kart section shows how cunning he can be by ambushing them before they can but before that we have to see him be simp by rehearsing his proposal with Kamek 🤣
Then time for the most action packed sequence of the movie. The invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach making sure everyone evacuates first, Bowser using force and manipulation to force her decision. The hilarious failed marriage and Peach kicking absolute ass with the ice flower. Mario and DK team up against the Koopa army all while the best track in the movie plays (fighting tooth and veil is so good omg) the rescue of Luigi and the immediate hug afterwards followed by "Mario why do you look like bear what is this" XD. Then using that said "bear" power to save the Mushroom kingdom and go back to NYV
Time for my favorite moment of the film. Bowser finally letting lose and attacking Mario not just cause he ruined his wedding but also for how he makes him insecure regarding Peach. He destroys Mario and you can see how seriously beat up Mario was which is rare to ever see him officially injured. Mario then looks back at the commercial that he and Luigi made, he gets back up despite his injuries to help the others, Bowser repeats the words Peach said to Mario earlier, he acknowledges them, Peach kicks the Super Star towards him. Mario is then almost engulfed in flames and then Luigi saves him.
This moment right here is my favorite. I know Luigi didn't get a lot of screen time during the middle portion of the film but seeing him protect his brother and then repeat what Mario said "nothing can hurt them as long as they're together" honestly brought a tear to my eye the first time I saw it cause these two are my childhood heroes. Following this with an amazing fight against Bowser with the best rendition of the super star theme and what better way to end the film than by having Charles Martinet as Mario's father say "these are my boys"
This movie isn't flawless but I adored every second of it and I'll never get tired of watching it. This film is something I wanted in my childhood and forever greatful for it's existence and its sequel
I'll make a post about The Super Mario Galaxy movie at some later date cause I love that movie too.
