Buried Films.

I’m considering starting a collection of ‘buried’ films on DVD. By this I mean already little-known films that have had their obscurity heightened by the release of a significantly more successful film sharing its title.

I know it’s a silly idea, but I just like the idea of having a shelf that all sounds familiar on the spines, but everything pulled out is a different film to what was expected.

These are my dvd buying goals, which films should I add to my list?

Today’s boot sale finds

Got all these for £10

Pinchcliffe Grand Prix - already own this on bluray but was just so shocked to find this at a UK boot sale

A Flintstone Christmas Carol - Must be the tenth variation of a Christmas Carol I own on DVD now, maybe I should do a tedious marathon this Christmas

Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of Four

Christmas is here again - Looks truly awful and potentially doesn’t have English language on this bluray. Hopefully I’m pleasantly surprised but it’s written and directed by a mockbuster writer and looks like a flash cartoon so my hopes aren’t high

Gubben Pettson - not a film, doesn’t have English subs but I couldn’t resist

Star Wars the clone wars s1 - totally not interested in Star Wars. I don’t know why I picked this up. It’s not a feature. My first regret buy of the bundle.

The adventures of tin tin - never watched it, thought it looked awful. I guess I’m gonna be finally giving it a go now.

Ice age 3 - ice age DVDs are in literally every charity shop ever, but this is a blu ray. I’m in no rush to get the rest soon unless I come across them on bluray for super cheap as well

Come with Marcus - had no idea what this was, after a google seems like a fairly worthless buy. Just thought I’d take a risk

Tiny toons annual - grew up on this. Had the video games as well. Was also the show that introduced me to ‘they might be giants’. Couldn’t just leave it sat there.

Non animation DVDs I got in my £10 were a ‘Les ballets trockadero’ boxset, and a ‘Limelight’ Chaplin collection dvd

‘Pink Shelf’ Collection - The Greatest Films of All Time

Here is mine & my partners collection of the greatest films of all time. We don’t know what the specific requirements for a film to be on the pink shelf is, but when we know we know.

Based on the vibes, what films are we missing?

Recent animation haul

I got too much from the charity shop this past couple of days - but most of it is pretty ty uninteresting stuff to photograph. Storks, Toy Story 4, Frozen 2, Free Birds, mainstream released CGI films from the past 15 years.

Photographed what I had ordered online though. Already 1 disc in to watching the old Tom and Jerry cartoons and loving it.

Today’s new animation DVDs

Some early obscure ones. Gonna be watching the German one with a printout of the script as there are no English subs. I got the ‘La Petit Chaneuse’ dvd as it also contains ‘L'horloge magique ou La petite fille qui voulait être princesse’ although the version on here is ten minutes shorter than the one I’m aware of on YouTube and I don’t know why. I guess I’ll find out when I watch it.

Who are your highest rated actors on Letterboxd

One for the pros and patrons as I don’t think letterboxd lets you see this info as a regular user.

Hey everyone

Hope this is ok to post here. I’m an animation collector who has lurked this subreddit for a bit. I’ve been hoping to connect with some like-minded collectors so I’ve made this subreddit for people collecting animation DVDs, VHS, Posters, Figurines etc

If that sounds like you or even something you’re interested in then please join.

My top 20 films I’ve seen 2026

I’ve watched 170 films this year. These are my top 20. What would you recommend me based on these films?

I got this Chinese animation boxset recently,
I think the first one is Nezha Conquers the Dragon Ling (1979) and the second one is The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven (1961) but I Can’t figure out the other three from google translate or the images.

I’ve been collecting animation DVDs for a while now. I have about 150 more but I need to get another shelf (and move somewhere with more space) before I pull them out of storage so I’ve left all the least rare ones (Pixar, Dreamworks, Ghibli etc) packed away for now.

What animated films should I get next? I’m specifically interested in DVDs from other countries, from before 1990 and of lesser known animations. My holy grail is ‘Grendel Grendal Grendal’. I found a copy in Melbourne when I was over in Australia but the guy who ran the shop said it was rental only and wouldn’t even sell me it for $100.

I’m really keen to go see Peter Grimes with my friend, but I fear we may end up ruining the experience for everyone else around us. We both find dissonant music and English language opera very funny, it just hits us as surreal and jarring and makes us both laugh (especially when more banal lines are sung or more dramatic lines are delivered with peculiarities). A good example of the sort of thing that would crack us up is 1:55 in this video https://youtu.be/PTithiNNMy4?si=D7-Qv8egDx1vrawa I’ve seen Peter grimes once before and it became my favourite English language opera - but I feel like my reasoning for this probably doesn’t align with a lot of other people’s enjoyment.

I think laughter is a valid form of appreciation, I often laugh at extreme metal shows when I hear something that I consider bizarre or impressive or over the top. Weird sounding jazz will also get this response from me. I worry that as Opera seems a lot more ‘for the elites’ and that there seems to be an established etiquette for watching it, that two people dressed down laughing at points will be scorned and we may even be asked to leave. It’s expensive for us so I thought I’d check what the general consensus was from the online opera community before booking. Thanks a lot for reading.

Edit: Thanks for the responses. We’ve decided best not to go to the show. Really appreciate the handful of you who responded earnestly and kindly. Those of you perturbed at the concept of anyone enjoying a dissonant opera in a way that would elicit laughter should probably have a glass of water and a sit down though.
