Azurite from the Smithsonian

I promised to post my museum pieces of Azurite. This is one of William Roeblings early acquisitions with a number of R78 and likely acquired in the 1880's. I find this specifically fascinating as I have family history of mining not far from Bisbee in Tombstone, AZ during the same time period. This is from the Washington Roebling, Smithsonian, and Jack Halpern collections. When Roebling passed in the 1920's his collection was donated to the Smithsonian. It's so fragile and old I didn't want to remove it from the packaging until I am ready to display it.

Azurite, Milpillas Mine, Sonora, Mexico

I have some pretty showy pieces. This one is one of my favorites.

Datolite with copper inclusions, Adventure Mine, Michigan

There is also a little bit of epidote in it. Epidote is very common in that mine.

Datolite from Isle Royale, Keeweenaw, MI

I haven't seen datolite in many colors other than white or pink. I wish it was the entire thing and not just a half, but I like it either way.

Quartz after-on Flourite

Ex Rantz Collection Weardale, Durham, England, UK

This thing is almost completely hollow. You can see a corner that wasn't filled in. It quickly became one of my favorite pieces.

Some interesting stuff I found in Utah

Around the Silver Lake Mountains and Hastings Pass. I found most of this during the day looking for reactive minerals. The tiny one glows orange under LW and purple under SW.

The biggest friggin quartz geode I have ever seen

My kid didn't want me to post his face. Honestly, I think this is better than the disdained mug of a 13 year old at the Grand Canyon posing for Dad in front of a really big rock. Lol

Quartz on Flourite, Supernova Pocket, Diana Maria Mine, Fosterley, Co. Duram, England

This is from a relatively new find. It's grey/green inside and purple in sunlight. It is also highly florescent blue.

Large Russian Azurite Nodule

The largest nodule I have ever seen until this weekend was around 2cm. This thing is huge. I was at the CGMA show and this guy had a ton of nodules. He was telling me how he went to the miner and bought every last specimen they had left after the mine was cleaned out around '21. There was a larger more expensive piece, but this one stood out. It was from the seller's personal collection.

Aquired this little guy at the CGMA Show in Chicagoland, Malachite after Azurite

It is super velvety.

Epidote from Concession Morgan 3, Canete, Lima, Peru

The inclusions make it sparkle. I am really happy with this piece. Oak apparently wasn't impressed. 🤷
