She texted me saying I deserved an explanation…

Dinner is beef stew with homemade fries. A lot of work to make but very good comfort food.

Tl:dr of the above post: my girlfriend of two years breaks up with me over video call with very little explanation and no warning up front, two weeks after an international internship. She tells me it’s because I’m not assertive enough, although we’ve just spent the summer talking about our future and wedding.

So basically I’ve been pretty in the dumps over this. I’ve always manifested emotional problems physically and have been struggling with my health. I’ve tried to distract myself by focussing intensely on my job and studies (with admittedly good results) but it still feels like every time I go to bed I fall apart again. I have nightmares and such.

I’ve also told my therapist about all of this, and the drop in my self-esteem because of it. He’s offered some good advice, but it doesn’t feel like enough.

So it’s been a few weeks, and I suddenly get a text from her. I take a while before reading it, trying to work up the courage and nerve to do it. Obviously I’m pretty confused since this is very unexpected.

I read the text. It starts of with an apology for how she broke up. She says she shouldn’t have done it this way and it hurt me and she’s sorry for that. She doesn’t explain why she couldn’t have broken up with me in a better way, though.

She also says I deserve more of an explanation than she gave earlier. The rest of the text is basically a more in-depth reasoning behind why she broke up. Apparently she’s been thinking about it for a while, and as I suspected I probably missed the signs.

She says she had a growing worry about my “lack of masculinity and assertiveness” and she slowly realised she wanted a “guy that could take the lead” and “guide her through her life”. She also says that she doesn’t blame me for this, but it’s just something she needs and I can’t provide. This is confusing to me because when we got together and through all of our relationship she never once mentioned this. In fact, she always said she loved me because I was sensitive, caring, respectful, and a good listener.

Anyways, she continues to say that in the beginning of the summer she’d set an ultimatum. She would give me until she departed to change and take the lead. Again, she didn’t tell me this because then it would be “fake”. Which I understand I guess. Apparently her and I talking about the wedding and our future and doing our summer bucket list was her way of hinting to me.

I failed the ultimatum, and she left, and then broke up.

I haven’t replied and I’m not really planning too. I’m sort of happy with the explanation, but it also feels like another blow. I don’t feel like the entire ultimatum thing was a good way of going about this, and I’m still confused why she seemingly wants something of me I’ve never really been while telling me she loved the things I have always been.

So yeah, I guess I’m just sad again.

My two years gf [20F] broke up with me [21M] after two weeks outside the country. What happened?

I guess a little background first won’t hurt. I have known my gf for 4 years and we have officially been together for 2. We met at volunteer work, became friends first and it gradually evolved into a relationship.

I genuinely loved and still love her. I loved how she could understand me and never judged me (for context I have ASD and often have a hard time communicating, but it was easy with her). I loved how she knew me in a way nobody else did. I love how passionate she is about her job. I love her creative mind and her hobbies.

From the other side, she always said she loved my ability to listen and be there for her, my patience, and how caring I was. Once I asked her what she loved most about me and she said “how I know you’ll always take care of me no matter what.”

So anyways moving on. We’ve had a good relationship for two years. Sure, occasionally we disagree, but it was never out of the ordinary and we always made up after. We were happy. This summer was especially nice. We went on a volunteer trip to Asia to help build new homes, we had cute picknick dates, we painted together, cooked together, and had a lot of fun.

We also planned for the future, and she mentioned she wanted to get engaged soon. We talked about how our wedding would be, and how our lives and family would look like. She didn’t know this, but I had already bought an engagement ring. I was planning to ask her after her internship.

This internship is a four month long international internship. It’s very far and very long. She initially had doubts on whether she wanted to go, because she didn’t want to leave me behind. I knew she was excited for it though and encouraged her to go, helping her prepare. The last week before she left was especially nice. We exchanged gifts and promises and she left me a box full of open-when letters. We have a last day date of eating ice cream and me cooking for her.

Then she leaves, and this is the turning point in the story. We’ve always texted a lot when we’re away from each other, but suddenly she’s very unresponsive. She doesn’t say I love you anymore. She doesn’t say goodnight (something we always do even when we’re mad). She acts very cold and business like.

I assume it’s because of the stress of the new environment and decide to give her some space. I let her know I’m available to talk but I reduce my texting. Then suddenly she asks for a video call, two weeks into the internship.

It lasts for about thirty minutes. She tells me she’s ending it, because we’re not compatible. She needs a more confident and assertive guy, and she can’t expect me to change. She hopes I will understand someday, and asks me to deliver the open when letters and some other stuff to her parents. She then hangs up, saying there’s nothing else left to say.

I don’t get it. Everything was good until literally the day she left. I know it’s a stereotype that guys just don’t see the problems, but I just don’t know.

I need some help figuring out what went wrong. Obviously there is some sort of problem that I’m unaware of, but I just can’t see it.

tldr: me and my gf have a good relationship for two years. She goes on international internship and immediately becomes very cold in her communication. After two weeks she video calls me and breaks up, telling me she needs a confident and assertive boyfriend.

Looking to worldbuild and roleplay a unique superhero setting

Hey there! If you’re reading this, thanks for clicking my post and taking the time to look at it. I hope you like what you find, and decide to send me a message!

I’ll generously provide you with a summary of what I want. I like superheroes and the associated settings, but I’ve grown a bit bored of the standard settings. That’s why I decided to make my own setting, more unique and interesting than the existing ones!

A big problem I have with most superhero stories is that they all have the same powers at different strength levels, or different combinations of the same powers. It just gets a little bland when you have 15 characters who all have slightly different “Superman-Packages and 21 fire manipulators.

Taking that into account, I want characters in my world to have interesting, complex and diverse powers. Some of the mutants from Marvel are examples, although the really famous ones fall into the same pitfall. I have several sample superpowers I can share if you’re interested.

I’m also interested in having a non-standard setting for our story that we build together. Examples would be a superpowered espionage setting where subterfuge is more important than combat, a superpower-led World War 3, or playing as the rebellion against a superpowered dictator.

If this interests you, send me a message! Password is “not superman”. I’m looking forward to it!
